Please supervise your child at the salad bar

Having dinner earlier at a restaurant with salad bar. Observed a perhaps 8 year old scooping up pasta with tongs, scraping excess off with fingers, licking fingers, more scraping, licking tongs.

Please supervise your children.

Without a word of a lie @FuriousVexation, I have been ill every single time after I've been to pizza hut. Without fail. No idea why. Haven't been there for about 5 years now, it's always quick and violent response.

Samarie123 · 14/07/2019 05:42

Never have that problem as I never touch anything unwrapped and left out.
Though I do serve my own food to family afyer sneezing all over it Grin

PapayaCoconut · 14/07/2019 05:49

Germs are good for you aren't they? Don't they boost our immune systems?

Yes, in terms of not living in a quarantine and never going out, but not in terms of skipping hand washing after filling to the toilet and then touching food, for example.

www.theweek.co.uk/101934/over-cleanliness-debunked-how-often-should-you-wash-your-hands

"[...] we have become confused about what hygiene is, and how it differs from cleanliness [...] whereas cleaning means removing dirt and microbes, hygiene means cleaning in the places and times that matter - in the right way - to break the chain of infection whilst preparing food, using the toilet, caring for pets, etc."

PapayaCoconut · 14/07/2019 05:51

*going to the toilet

YouJustDoYou · 14/07/2019 05:55

Salad bar ruffians! 😂

Butchyrestingface · 14/07/2019 05:59

Okay Rubber I guess I’m talking to those who don’t supervise their children hmm

Are they likely to be on this thread? Grin

speakout · 14/07/2019 06:04

It's not just children who have bad habits at a salad bar. I watched a guy in Morrisons pick ear wax out and then rummage through the pick and mix salad with his fingers.

echt · 14/07/2019 06:37

One to avoid is very small children charged with the task of handing out food. Literally.

I keep a weather eye open on buffet style catering when small children are around. A number of family parties I've been too have the small children's food on a separate and lower table. I don't know if it's for hygiene reasons though.

SimonJT · 14/07/2019 06:40

I would never eat from a buffet, absolutely grim.

floribunda18 · 14/07/2019 06:51

Salad bars? Are you posting from 1998? I didn't know they still existed.

Ithinkmycatisevil · 14/07/2019 06:54

Ewww! I hate this. Also at 8 the child should have known better!

My other pet hate is children at parties/ buffets, taking bites out of things and putting them back! Yuck.

GnomeDePlume · 14/07/2019 07:14

It isnt just children. I saw a man stick his fingers in the 'serve yourself' olives/peppers/fish bar in my local supermarket and put some fish straight into his mouth.

I did tell the staff.

Troels · 14/07/2019 07:19

Dh calls them sneeze bars, and refuses to ever eat from them. After watching kids do this kind of thing I don't either.
It's an allergy sufferers nighmare, kids poking their fingers in stuff and moving tongs from place to place. Between germs and cross contamination I'm better off not eating.

LegionOfDoom · 14/07/2019 07:29

Forget kids, I saw a grown man, standing in line in front of me at the Toby Carvery, quite happily picking his nose like he was digging for treasure in there. He sneezed loudly into his hands and then picked up every item of food with his fingers. Didn’t even bother with the tongs. Me and dh just looked at each other and walked back to our table to tell the waitress we were leaving. When she asked why, we told her what happened and she just shrugged and said he was a regular Hmm

YoThePussy · 14/07/2019 07:48

How about bakery counters in supermarkets. Lovely fresh rolls and loaves of bread with the world and his wife breathing all over them, sneezing, etc. Use the tongs, nah, what are hands for, grubbier the better.

SheChoseDown · 14/07/2019 07:58

I see adults (old people mostly) pickup bread from the bakery section in at my workplace, give it a squeeze, touch it, sniff it.... Decide they don't want any bread and put it back and walk off.... Not fucking ok.
It then gets removed and binned. Such a waste!!!!

Impatienceismyvirtue · 14/07/2019 08:00

YABVVVVU to be eating at a “restaurant” with a salad bar. Pick classier establishments to avoid the vegetable version of sneeze muffins Grin

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/07/2019 08:00

That’s why I don’t buy from Lidl’s bakery. However lovely people tell me it is, it’s too sneezy and dirty hands everywhere

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 14/07/2019 08:18

Adults are worst than kids. I have seen so many morons in buffets using the same tong to help themselves from several serving dishes, because they were too lazy to use a separate one each time.
They don't care a tiny bit about others, but the next person with a food allergy who could have had a safe meal just had to put up with the whole dish being contaminated.

When they behave like that, they won't know how to raise their kids will they.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/07/2019 08:22

Another reason to avoid our local Harvester.

cdtaylornats · 14/07/2019 08:26

When I was at university I saw a 22 year old adult covered in chocolate. He had a summer job at a McVities factory and two of them were pouring liquid chocolate and somehow fell out of balance an covered him in it. They sent him home. By the time he got back to the campus it had started to set.

MashedSpud · 14/07/2019 08:32

I avoid open food areas like the plague.

I Imagine they are full of saliva, other bodily fluids and flies have likely pranced over it.

CherryPavlova · 14/07/2019 08:33

I haven’t been to anywhere with a salad bar for years. Even our staff refectory salads are served by catering staff.
Salad bars are a revolting idea and quite high risk from a food hygiene perspective. People who don’t wash their hands after using the lavatory using the same shared spoons and leaving invisible faecal matter on them, people using hands to pick up things and changing their minds, sneezing and coughing.....and that’s before you think about pasta and rice sat our for hours.
I just couldn’t eat from a communal dish like a salad bar; too revolting.

Buddytheelf85 · 14/07/2019 08:37

I've never seen this but now I'm questioning my every appearance at the Pizza Hut buffet . Damn.

Definitely don’t think germs are the biggest health risk posed by the Pizza Hut buffet!

LadyPoldark · 14/07/2019 08:40

I once made a huge pasta salad to bring to a BBQ , and I asked my DS13 to hold the bowl while I poured it in. I was half way and the bugger sneezed all over it!! I was so raging chucking it in the bin!Angry
