Help!!! DS locked in bedroom!!!

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 13/07/2019 17:04

Just posting in AIBU for traffic although an alternative thread title could be AIBU To Leave Him In There?

Seriously though I'm starting to panic as all my efforts have had no effect whatsoever.
The door has the handle missing from the outside. There is nothing within the space where levers etc should be but the handle is still screwed onto his side . However that handle is useless.
I've wiggled and waggled, flat screwdrivers, tiny knives . I've watched videos but they all either use specialist tools or have a different door handle design.
Please can anyone help me get him out of his room?
He wasn't supposed to shut the door but hey ho. He has and we're here.
The photo is of the space inside the door from my side, this is where the inner bolt thing of the door handle would go. And the door handle is on the other side of the door, naturally.

Why on earth would you call the fire brigade! I mean really. Call a friend and get them to bring a bloody hatchet over calling the fire brigade. He’s in no danger.

Or will this be one of those threads where the op is NC with all family members and only has one friend who lives in New Zealand!!

EleanorReally · 13/07/2019 18:48

call the fire brigade, they are fire and rescue after all. they will take the door off the hinges.

Yabbers · 13/07/2019 18:50

Why on earth would you call the fire brigade!

Because they are there to help with this kind of thing too.

SadOtter · 13/07/2019 18:51

Locksmith DH says "Plastic drinks bottle, cut a strip off, fold it in half to make it more rigid and wiggle it through the gap between the door and the door fame and use it to push the latch open."

Dancingbea · 13/07/2019 18:54

This happened to my 11 year old. We called the fire brigade. Loads of them came. They were very happy to help. I imagine if there was a fire somewhere it would have been low priority, but, there wasn’t.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 13/07/2019 18:54

Sorry for delay.
My son is free!! So, unfortunately was the dog.
The fire brigade were bloody fantastic. Here in 10 minutes and got him out with a special axe type lever thing.
However, just as my son was freed I realised the dog had made a bid for freedom.

Despite my protests, the Firefighters went on a dog catching mission and caught the bugger eventually.

I felt very guilty about calling them in the first place but they were amazing. They called it a Special Service. I'd make a smutty joke here under normal circumstances but I need a huge mug of tea and a sit down.

A thousand thank yous to all of you who took the time to post, you're all bloody lovely.

My son is very relieved "to breathe fresh air again" and is glad he is no longer trapped "like the boys in the cave last year". Not one for dramatics, my boy.

Hope you all have a restful night.

I'm off for a Brew

Glad to hear of the happy ending! And I love your son’s flair for the dramatic.

callmeadoctor · 13/07/2019 18:58

Fab!

MeYouWye · 13/07/2019 18:59

Glad you got free OP! This happened to me once when babysitting except I was in the room without a phone. Finally got out with half a wooden clothes peg.

picklemepopcorn · 13/07/2019 19:00

Wonderful thread! Perfectly timed for me- started reading and arrived at the last post as it was written. Satisfying.

Star

and this is for you Brew

saraclara · 13/07/2019 19:03

There's no need to call the fire brigade when locksmiths exist, ffs.

AbbiMarigoldWalton · 13/07/2019 19:03

Hooray!

saraclara · 13/07/2019 19:04

Ah. Didn't realise there was a second page. I'm glad he's out anyway, OP.

annielouise · 13/07/2019 19:07

It happened to us. We were told by a locksmith to gouge away at the wood in the door frame where the snib goes into the plate part so that you can then depress the snib and open the door. Good luck. Don't phone the fire brigade. Phone a locksmith first.

annielouise · 13/07/2019 19:07

I didn't see the second page either for some reason. Glad you got him out.

MrsMozartMkII · 13/07/2019 19:10

Yay for freedom!

Loving the description and the firefighters and your son and the dog Grin

Enjoy your cuppa.

Derpess · 13/07/2019 19:15

Yay!!!! Enjoy your tea!

Ha ha, he'll get great mileage out of this story. Glad he's out. Well done to the Special Service Firemen 😃

SoupDragon · 13/07/2019 19:18

They called it a Special Service.

😂

Sandybval · 13/07/2019 19:25

I used to work for a fire service, if someone vulnerable is stuck in a room or if there is a fire hazard ie locked out but a hob has been left on then absolutely phone. It's not like they will be diverted from a house fire, the operators are professionals who will orchastrate an appropriate response. Some charge, but they will let you know when you call, if you don't want to call 999 then their website will have an admin line number which will still go through to the control room. So glad he is now free, must be a huge relief for you!

Jaxhog · 13/07/2019 19:30

Phew! That must be a relief.

I locked myself in the bedroom a couple of years ago. I shut the door and the outside handle fell off. It took DH an hour to get me out trying pliers, spindle, etc. Fortunately, he managed before we had to call the fire brigade.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 13/07/2019 19:32

@RoomR0613 no phone. Neighbours were lovely though. The old lady next door didn't have internet but I phoned 101 from her landline. Finally found another nearby neighbour who was in with internet who let me look up DH's work switchboard number on their phone and then call him. He was driving the 30mins home with his key when I tried to cancel the Fire Brigade. They were already on their way while I was on the phone and weren't happy to leave while I waited for DH to arrive (I was really happy to wait and could see a very happy DS through the window watching Cbeebies).

They wouldn't have come to me if they were called to a higher priority call and they were done and dusted in less than 5 mins.

londonrach · 13/07/2019 21:06

Great ending. Another female and i got locked in a garden centre toilets for thirty minutes once...i ended up climbing onto the toilet seat and shouting through the tiny window. The lock had failed. I remember thinking theres worse places as had toilet and water. Op...did your ds need the toilet

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 13/07/2019 21:14

This happened to me. Could not open son’s bedroom door, took handle off etc.
I phoned the police for advice ( don’t know what I thought they would do!).
They told me to phone the fire brigade. They came to the house, blue lights on, no siren thankfully. It was classed as a fire risk because he would be stuck in a fire. They had to remove the wood around the door frame to open the door. They very kindly put the wood surround back for me.
