Help!!! DS locked in bedroom!!!

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 13/07/2019 17:04

Just posting in AIBU for traffic although an alternative thread title could be AIBU To Leave Him In There?

Seriously though I'm starting to panic as all my efforts have had no effect whatsoever.
The door has the handle missing from the outside. There is nothing within the space where levers etc should be but the handle is still screwed onto his side . However that handle is useless.
I've wiggled and waggled, flat screwdrivers, tiny knives . I've watched videos but they all either use specialist tools or have a different door handle design.
Please can anyone help me get him out of his room?
He wasn't supposed to shut the door but hey ho. He has and we're here.
The photo is of the space inside the door from my side, this is where the inner bolt thing of the door handle would go. And the door handle is on the other side of the door, naturally.

Is it your own property? If it’s council or HA they will have on call tradesman that would come and fix it.

jmh740 · 13/07/2019 17:47

Try the bit of plastic thing this happened to my oh earlier in the year and this is how we got him out well we cut open a pop can and used the metal slid it under the door and oh needed to slide it up himself on his side of the door. I called the fire brigade as oh is disabled they said they weren't allowed to come out to it and suggested I ring a locksmith it was 2am!

RoomR0613 · 13/07/2019 17:47

The scissors thing mentioned above should do the trick (put the pointy end in then open the blades and twist)

Or just a normal dinner knife.

Done this loads of times (lived in a shithole growing up)

PonderingPanda · 13/07/2019 17:49

Happened to me to. The mechanism in the door had disintegrated!. I had to hack some of the door handle hole away so l could get a screwdriver in to pull the latch back

Cheby · 13/07/2019 17:49

I think I’d either be kicking it in or using something sharp to essentially dig the handle out of the door, as pp mentioned above. Good luck!

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2019 17:51

Can you remove the door trim to get to the bit that sticks into the hole?

GrabbyGertie · 13/07/2019 17:51

I’ve got a lot of different long nose pliers - they are a pretty typical thing to have. I bet one of your neighbours has some. Can you call on a few neighbours and ask. Most people would be happy to help.

Alternatively are you a member of a local Facebook group? Could you ask for help on that?

Have you a photo of the backside of handle itself.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2019 17:52

I agree about trying a dinner knife (or paint scraper, something thin anyway). Isn't this how people break into places with a credit card?

redastherose · 13/07/2019 17:53

If the cross post won't retract the snib then you could get a chisel and hammer and tap the chisel down the side of the door until you get to the snib then see if you can wiggle it back but by bit. Last resort would be to hack away the door at the edge until you can get to the snib properly to force it back.

Oberonunder · 13/07/2019 17:54

I agree with the suggestion of local Facebook group. On ours someone would come and rescue you for free before you know it.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2019 17:57

Last resort would be to hack away the door at the edge

The frame might be cheaper to replace.

insancerre · 13/07/2019 17:58

You have a child locked in a room
I would be ringing the fire brigade
He can’t spend all night in there
And what if there was a fire- he’d be trapped

Lockheart · 13/07/2019 18:00

Could you try calling family / friends / emergency locksmiths before calling the fire brigade?

growlingbear · 13/07/2019 18:00

When DH got stuck in the bathroom, I got him out by putting a really fine tipped flat screwdriver between door and latch, then pushing it hard against the latch and pressing it back towards the door so the latch slid back with it. Very fiddly and failed for about 30 mins but finally worked. Is that worth a try?

jollyohh · 13/07/2019 18:00

This happened to me once. I tried using a different handle but it was the latch catch that was broken, rather than the spindle.

What worked in the end was using a screw driver to pull or push (can't remember now) the part that moves the latch in the door. Bit fiddly but I did it, then took the whole thing out so it couldn't happen again!

TSSDNCOP · 13/07/2019 18:02

I think I’d use the fire brigade here once all the other options are exhausted. I think they’d come out for a locked in kid. They’ll just send a couple of guys in a car probably rather than a whole rig.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 13/07/2019 18:03

Right, scissors didn't work.
Can't get to snib (wedge?) as the door is against a wall at 90degrees. The handle side .
Don't want to give DS a bit of cut up can. We'd need an ambulance to go with the fire engine.
When people say Facebook groups do you mean the buy and sell groups. I'm not a big user of FB anymore.

If he’s still in there, we’ve always used a dismantled wire coat hanger when our door with missing handle gets closed. If you put a bend in the end, you can catch the hole in the spindle to turn.

londonrach · 13/07/2019 18:05

@HoofWankingSpangleCunt. Yes the local facebook buy and sell sites. I bet it be active now. Good luck. If not suggest fireman as you have a child stuck

BarbariansMum · 13/07/2019 18:06

It is ok to call the fire brigade you know. They do cats, they can certainly do a child. And they prioritize their call outs, so no-one will be watching their house burn down because you called them.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/07/2019 18:06

Stick scissors into the square hole, open them out so that the blades fit diagonal corners of the square and then use them as a giant screwdriver/lever to open the door.

This has worked for me in the past too.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/07/2019 18:09

Sorry, see you've tried scissors. I'd call the Fire Brigade.

PerkingFaintly · 13/07/2019 18:10

Cut up plastic milk carton, rather than can, sounded like a good idea to me.

The snib presumably has its curved edge pointing to your side of the door, so ideally the plastic would be operated from your side.

BUT because of your access problems, would it work better if the plastic were fed part way through from your DS's side? (I'm trying to imagine your door positioning. Another pic?)

waltzingparrot · 13/07/2019 18:11

If you can get a screwdriver to him, can he unscrew the door handle from his side. He might be able to get to the wedge thingy and pull it into the door insides and free it from locking him in.

DoctorNicoleWatterson · 13/07/2019 18:12

Don't know if this would help as tink you're on the wrong side of the door, but just in case.
