OH got bit by something we dont know what but leg has swollen and very red and hot to the touch. Plus flu like symptoms. Went to gp and hes been prescribed anti biotics for lymes disease as a precaution. Go said its definitely infected. Hes told me that hes not starting the course until monday as he wants to go out tonight.

He dosent drink often.

AIBU for being angry that hes risking his life for a fucking drink? Why cant he just to it next week? It's not a special occasion.

RedSheep73 · 13/07/2019 10:48

If he's got flu like symptons he's hardly going to be able to go out on the lash, is he? he'll be too busy shivering on his bed. He's being an idiot. I suppose as a grown up he has a right to be an idiot if he wants but you have the right to tell him he's being stupid!

froggybiby · 13/07/2019 10:48

That is very stupid indeed. He could get worse. Anyone can make him realise the risks?

MayFayner · 13/07/2019 10:49

Yanbu, but on the other hand he can’t be that bad if he wants to go out.

Is he soldiering on or has he got the “sick voice” going on?

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/07/2019 10:49

Thats what I would've thought. I cant get through to him. I've sent him information on the risks so hopefully he'll not be so stupid. Hes at work today. Hes very I'm fine nothings wrong attidute

BlueSkiesLies · 13/07/2019 10:49

Has the doctor told him he can’t drink? It’s a bit of a myth that you can’t drink on antibiotics, it’s only a few kinda.

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/07/2019 10:50

To put it perspective he had a collapsed lung a few months back after being in hosp getting it sorted he wanted to be at work the next day. He soliders on.

OP posts:
BiscuitDrama · 13/07/2019 10:51

Unless it’s metronidazole, he can drink on them.

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/07/2019 10:52

Its cefuroxime which says not to drink while taking them

OP posts:
MyNewBearTotoro · 13/07/2019 10:55

Has he checked that he can’t drink on his antibiotics? Most antibiotics are fine to take with alcohol - I was on antibiotics (flucloxecillin) a few weeks ago and was celebrating a friend’s birthday. I drank a lot of alcohol with no problems/ reactions with the antibiotic. Obviously he should check the label because different antibiotics will vary but mind didnt even mention alcohol on there.

rainbowstardrops · 13/07/2019 10:55

I think most, if not all, antibiotics state not to drink whilst taking them but a GP once told me it's absolutely fine as long as you don't go mad (this was the evening before my wedding day!)
Having said that, if it's infected and he's got flu-like symptoms then he's a numpty for not starting the ABs asap! He could very well live to regret his choice otherwise

Blahblahblahnanana · 13/07/2019 10:56

Stupid man! Agree it’s a bit of a myth that you can’t drink alcohol whilst taking antibiotics. However, the antibiotics that you need to avoid alcohol completely are metronidazole and tinidazole.

optimisticpessimist01 · 13/07/2019 10:57

You can drink whilst taking cefuroxime, just in moderation

It says on all antibiotics that you shouldn't drink, but there's only a few antibiotics that you can't actually drink on. Just easier to have a blanket comment on them all. Google it

Tell DH to take the tablet and go out, win win situation

Greyhound22 · 13/07/2019 11:00

Well he hasn't got 'flu like symptoms' because he wouldn't have even been able to get to the doctors if he had.

If he wants to risk losing his leg or dying from sepsis then let him carry on. My poor friend contracted Lymes from a tick bite a couple of years ago. It's really affected her quality of life - she's been in and out of hospital. It's not to be trifled with.

The reliance on alcohol and 'getting pissed' in this country is absolutely beyond ridiculous.

hadthesnip2 · 13/07/2019 11:00

As @BlueSkiesLies says. Saw it on QI a few years back (and they're never wtong). Said the "no drinking whilst taking antibiotics" was started by the navy. When our boys were in port & catching all sorts from "ladies of the night" the MO didn't want them getting drunk & forgetting take their meds. So came up with "the 2 dont mix" so whatever they had would clear up quicker.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 13/07/2019 11:02

If he's openly acknowledging that his antibiotics say not to drink on them and doing it anyway, or delaying starting them because he wants to drink, he's being a bit of a dick. YANBU. However, he's also an adult and if he wants to continue pushing his body, there's very little you can do to prevent him.

Blahblahblahnanana · 13/07/2019 11:03

The patient leaflet doesn’t advise against drinking alcohol.

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/07/2019 11:10

Ahh I'll let him know. Hes very risky when it comes to his health. Took me 3 days to convince him to go docs when he couldn't breathe and had chest pains. Collapsed lung.

OP posts:
mrsmuddlepies · 13/07/2019 11:10

Sound like it could possibly be cellulitis. It is really serious if it is. Start on the antibiotics now.

tearinmybeer · 13/07/2019 11:12

I can't stand it when people won't take responsibility for their health and then others have to suffer or work extra hard. It's incredibly selfish and he should see that. IT IS SO SELFISH. DID I MENTION THE SELFISHNESS INVOLVED?

Tell him to stop being so fucking selfish.

fraxion · 13/07/2019 11:14

Regardless of whether or not you can drink on anti-biotics he is downright stupid by not starting them right away, especially as he's been told his leg is infected.

Blahblahblahnanana · 13/07/2019 11:24

If you’ve not already i’d send him a link about the risks of sepsis. 5 people are killed by sepsis every hour in the UK. He could ultimately lose his life and is a very selfish bastard IMO!

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/07/2019 11:29

Don’t worry, non-compliant patients often do really well with this sort of thing.

Rachelover40 · 13/07/2019 11:30

You're not being unreasonable but a person can drink so many hour after taking antbiotics, eg if they were supposed to take three or four times a day which is usual, they take the lot by lunchtime - maybe double up which people often do on the first day By, say, 7pm the antibiotics will have worked and they can drink if they want to without fear of the antibiotics being weakened.

You can buy antibiotic cream over the counter to apply topically, it's very good too.

Hope he is over this soon, bites like that are horrible.

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/07/2019 11:31

Yeah docs went over the risks of sepsis with him they have drawn around the redness to see if it gets worse. I just got so annoyed for him to be so silly about it.

OP posts:
JingsMahBucket · 13/07/2019 11:38

Yeah, he’s being really stupid. @tearinmybeer you totally put it the right way. I pushed my husband to see a second doctor last winter when a cough wouldn’t go away and he had to sleep sitting up. His own doctor waved it off. We finally went to mine and she gave him a referral for the emergency room/A & E. He went in to get tests done and he had to stay overnight because it turns out he had an embolism in his lung that moved from his leg.

He could’ve died if it weren’t caught earlier. A day after being discharged from the hospital I told him that I wished he listened to me more when it comes to health stuff. Both of our parents were in the medical field but I seemed to have picked up more knowledge, the ability to diagnose situations and just general intuition than he did. We could’ve saved ourselves a lot of fucking worry and upset if he had just gone to get chest looked at earlier. Thank goodness we’re both freelance and didn’t miss too much work.
