OH got bit by something we dont know what but leg has swollen and very red and hot to the touch. Plus flu like symptoms. Went to gp and hes been prescribed anti biotics for lymes disease as a precaution. Go said its definitely infected. Hes told me that hes not starting the course until monday as he wants to go out tonight.

He dosent drink often.

AIBU for being angry that hes risking his life for a fucking drink? Why cant he just to it next week? It's not a special occasion.

My friend had a simple graze that got infected quickly, then quickly turned septic - she went to A&E and took the meds immediately. Infections are not to be messed around with, they can turn lethal.

DuMondeB · 13/07/2019 11:58

Lymes can trigger HLH, which is a terrifying condition, and often fatal (I know, because my daughter had it, hers was triggered by EBV).

He’s being a nob, but you can’t do much more to change that than you have already.

Brefugee · 13/07/2019 12:00

Ask him if his life insurance is up to date then tell him to grow up.

Seaweed42 · 13/07/2019 12:01

Why Monday? I thought the reason for not drinking with antibiotics is that it can lessen the effectiveness of them. Why could he not start them this afternoon, then go out, then take them all day tomorrow?
He can have a drink he doesn't have to get legless - or does he? Or will he be throwing up due to the drink, is that what happens?

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/07/2019 12:05

He never gets to the point of throwing up. Usually home by about 1am. Pubs close at 3am here. I don't get why he wanted to wait until Monday. As hes not drinking tomorrow.

Maybe it’s better if that happens because he might finally learn his lesson. Silly men.

Treatment for Lymes is extremely time sensitive. The quicker you catch it the easier it is to cure. The longer you leave it, the harder it is to treat. It 'beds in. If left it can have devastating consequences!

Ireland doesn't test for it yet. One cousin is a paraplegic, with no hope of improvement because it took years to diagnose as Lymes. My neice has been seriously ill and pretty much bedridden for most of her teens - again because of lack of diagnosis - she's been on seriously strong antibiotics for the last year and is only starting to get her life back. A neighbour was bitten in Canada where it is treated very seriously. Immediate (!) course of antibiotics and she's fine.

I'm not saying 48 hours delay will be a disaster, but I won't risk it myself. Not for a piss up!

My DH got bitten by a tick in the morning, later that night he was in ICU on life support with heart failure. Your DP is an idiot.

Sunnystars · 13/07/2019 12:17

I got bitten by a black ant on my wrist whilst gardening about 6 weeks ago, washed it with anti bacterial soap and took an antihistamine within about 10 minutes.
16 hours later on Sunday morning I went to our walk in clinic with my arm swollen up to my elbow and unable to bend my wrist or fingers.
I had Cellulitis and the doctor I saw said I was borderline needing to go to A&E for IV antibiotic but she prescribed me a heavy dose of antibiotics and made it clear if it got any worse to go to A&E within the next 12 hours.
I had to take the week off work (physical job) and keep my arm elevated for about 4 days before the swelling really subsided properly.

As an aside, your DH is a total arse if he doesn't take the risks of Sepsis seriously. I had meningococcal septicaemia about 20 years ago and was lucky to survive but I was off work, unpaid for 6 months...

IF he has any sense at all he will start taking the antibiotics NOW and will have a quiet few days resting to allow his body to do the work it needs fighting off the infection.

If he's got cellulitis he needs to be careful it doesn't get really deep and develop a flesh eating bacteria. Was warned of that when I had a bad case that took multiple courses of antibiotics to get rid of.

sackrifice · 13/07/2019 12:24

i think you need to reconsider this relationship, why would you be with someone who think drinking is more important than their own life?

claracluck78 · 13/07/2019 12:26

I've had bites/infections twice in the past two years that required IV antibiotics.

The first was a result of a spider bite that became infected and then even having oral antibiotics it didn't improve. 12 hours later I was back in hospital, hooked up to three lots of drugs and was told there was a 40% chance I wouldn't last the day. Luckily, the IV drugs did their magic and slowly over the next 24 hours I was taken from critical care, then told I might lose my leg, then told I might have a toe off and finally told that I was going to be ok. It was the scariest 36 hours of my life.

OP, I can show you some photos of what happens when infections spread. They aren't pretty but it might make him decide a night off the beer is better than 10 days in hospital followed by medical PTSD.

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/07/2019 12:51

Hes taken his 1st dose with his lunch. I've told him to be careful tonight. Hes going to see how he feels at dinner and decide what to do.
