To tell you how fantastic Lithuania is for a holiday?

We have just visited Vilnius (capital city of Lithuania) and wow! It's absolutely gorgeous. I wrongly expected it might be a tad grim as after all it's not that long ago that it gained independence from the Soviet Union. Not a bit of it. The historic centre is just lovely and the more modern parts nice too. Best of all, it's incredibly cheap compared to the UK in terms of accommodation, eating out (well everything really). Also cheap to fly to. If booked well in advance, air fares one way as little as £25 per person. What's not to like?

It’s on my to do list.

Did you visit Uzupis? Seems really cool!

FredaFrogspawn · 13/07/2019 05:37

We went to Tallinn in Estonia - similar.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like it could be a good place for a city break.

FredaFrogspawn · 13/07/2019 05:47

How easy is the transfer from the airport?

AnyFucker · 13/07/2019 06:03

.

Stopandlook · 13/07/2019 06:05

Shhhh!
Totally agree.

FoxgloveGarden · 13/07/2019 06:13

Mardassnails We actually stayed on the edge of the Uzupiz area. It was really quirky and quite delightful!
FredaFrogspawn We just took a taxi from the airport, so very easy. After that we used Uber to travel around. Usually about 2/3 Euros for any journey (very cheap)!

What was the food like?

Shock! A modern European capital with one of the oldest universities in central Europe isn't a complete s*ithole. I have travelled extensively both in the UK and Lithuania and it's quite clear that you are more likely to find a "grim place" in the former than the latter. PS I'm not from eastern Europe.

curlii103 · 13/07/2019 06:29

Is it child friendly? I'd love to go

Unfinishedkitchen · 13/07/2019 07:22

What if you’re not white or openly gay?

BottomliePotts · 13/07/2019 07:25

I've got close family from Lithuania, so this is really interesting.

I'm also interested to know what the foods like? I believe the weather is glorious in the summer?

I really should go

ZaraW · 13/07/2019 07:27

It's beautiful I did a trip to Stockholm, Talin, Riga and Vilnius a few years ago in winter all cities are amazing.

Baggiegirl · 13/07/2019 07:29

We’ going to a wedding there next year so now I’m even more excited 😀😀. It might sound a daft question but how big is the City centre as I want to try to get accommodation near the venue. I thin the venue is near the cathedral

ShrinkWrap · 13/07/2019 07:30

What unfinishedkitchen said. Genuinely interested

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/07/2019 07:30

I've been there too. We stayed in a great hotel with huge rooms - I've lived in smaller flats. We also visited an island whose name escapes me.

We travel a lot in Eastern Europe and are going to Riga in Latvia this year.

Abillity2019 · 13/07/2019 07:32

Yes YABU as if it’s come as some amazing enlightenment to the rest of us that former Soviet countries aren’t shitholes.

HateIsNotGood · 13/07/2019 07:37

I second Lithuania as a great place to visit - DS and I went about 5 yrs ago (DS was 12). We had a hire car and drove around staying mostly in Kaunas and Klaipeda - really interesting place. Totally safe and very friendly people.

FoxgloveGarden · 13/07/2019 07:38

Vilnius Lithuania is fabulous for foodies. Lithuanian cruisine is very good. My particular favourite beetroot soup with potatoes. Also, there are cruisines from all over the world represented. Everything we ate was exceptionally high quality.

I'm not sure how good for traveling with young children as we took older teens who enjoyed it as much as we did.

Why are people putting dots in their posts?

Lithuania sounds great, btw!

Dollywilde · 13/07/2019 07:43

We went to Vilnius in Feb, completely on a whim (was drunk over Xmas when I got an email advertising £20 fares Blush ) it was great! We accidentally were there on the weekend of their Independence Day and there was a party in the main square. Everyone was so friendly and it was really affordable and beautiful. The Genocide Museum is so moving - academically I’ve always known that the USSR was a huge power inside my own lifetime but it made it very real to read and see it (although I couldn’t bring myself to go into the execution chamber, admittedly).

Would also highly recommend! Smile

Dollywilde · 13/07/2019 07:44

Oh and agree the food was fabulous!

ZaraW · 13/07/2019 07:44

Hill of Crosses is fascinating.

Dollywilde · 13/07/2019 07:45

@FredaFrogspawn also if you don’t want to do taxis there’s a bus that goes direct from the airport to the bus station at the top of the city, very affordable.

Looking4wards · 13/07/2019 07:47

How easy is it to intereact with locals when say buying stuff when you don't speak the language?
How are the baby facilities when out and about, like baby changing places?
