To ask where we should move to in Leicestershire (or nearby?)

After a crappy few months I've realised how little support I have nearby so I'd like to move closer to where my family are in Leicestershire sometime in the next couple of years.

Must haves -
A town/village with good transport links as I don't drive.
Nowhere too rural- maybe a nice little high street and a few parks?
Good nurseries/ primary schools.
Budget - £200k for a 3 bed house with garden & driveway.

We'd be relocating from the north so somewhere near the M1 might be useful for visiting in laws? (but not essential)

@Breastfeedingworries I did find a Leicestershire section in the Mumsnet Local bit but it seemed very quiet...

I live around the west end/narborough road area. I want to move somewhere less busy. My friend just got a place in Woodhouse Eves and it’s lovely there x

Duebabynumbertwo · 13/07/2019 06:54

There seems to be a lot of nice houses in our budget around Coalville - does anyone know the area?

E.g this one in Hugglescote??

Coalville is cheap for a reason. Hugglescote is almost the same place.
Mountsorrel is up and coming and has a Waitrose 😀

Flossyfloof · 13/07/2019 08:04

Loughborough is fine. Town centre market twice a week. Pm me if you fancy it, I know the property market in this area well.
Ashby is nice too.

Ellabella989 · 13/07/2019 08:06

Mountsorrel is nice. So is Quorn and Woodhouse Eaves. Coalville isn’t great

YoungEurope · 13/07/2019 08:08

Seconding Woodhouse Eaves. Family member lived here and I thought it was a lovely area with a country park on your doorstep. Not sure of house prices though?

Flossyfloof · 13/07/2019 08:15

Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves are expensive.

Adelais · 13/07/2019 08:17

I’d recommend Barrow upon Soar or Sileby. Both big nice large villages with train stations.

Duebabynumbertwo · 13/07/2019 08:35

No properties in my search criteria in Woodhouse or Woodhouse eaves so guessing they’re out of my price range.

I’d look at Ashby de la Zouch too. We used to live a bit south of there in a village and Ashby is a great small town with lots going on, National Forest, well connected for motorways. Didn’t often go to Hinckley although it was just as close. Easy run to Birmingham or Nottingham for bigger city facilities. Just watch out for the HS2 route plans.

Coalville despite being near Ashby is a bit run down, used to have an amazing science museum at Snibston but the council closed it to sell for housing. Not sure really what the plans are. There are nice villages around but you don’t have to go far in Leicestershire to feel remote, especially if you don’t drive, I’d stick to a town.

Duebabynumbertwo · 13/07/2019 09:07

@notmenono ah I have fond memories of visiting snibston discovery park as a child! Sad

@Flossyfloof Loughborough seems like a good shout. Are there any areas you’d recommend or avoid?
This house is nice and in budget. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-72667990.html

Lilac Close is better. Probably smaller room sizes. It’s in the Fairmeadows estate I think

Babyroobs · 13/07/2019 14:05

Birstall - 3 miles from the city centre. You may get a house for that price, maybe a little more. Three primary schools , one is very new. Good transport links to Leicester and Loughborough, but not entirely easy to get to the M1 North.

Babyroobs · 13/07/2019 14:06

I think you're very unlikely to get a 3 bedroom house for 200k in any of the Soar valley villages like Mountsorrel, Quorn or Rothley, definitely not Woodhouse Eaves. Lovely villages but they come with a price tag !

That area (Quorn etc) must be mumsnet central of Leicestershire, it always comes up on these threads. OK it is nice round there but Leicestershire is a big county, better IMO to be on the right side for where you need to go.

koshkat · 13/07/2019 15:30

I know Leicestershire very well and suggest that you do not move there at all.

Ever.

NotMeNoNo · 13/07/2019 15:32

OP we had a season ticket for Snibston every year whilst my boys were small, we never tired.

Duebabynumbertwo · 13/07/2019 17:24

@koshkat you wouldn’t recommend living anywhere in the whole county of Leicestershire? Hmm

OP posts:
Jimdandy · 13/07/2019 17:50

@Breastfeedingworries I was going to say Lutterworth or Broughton I was there this morning having my hair done

Heyha · 13/07/2019 19:23

Had another thought- what about Ibstock? Villagey but still has a high street. There's Desford, Overseal/Netherseal and Enderby too that are ok but get overlooked, may not have enough amenities without travelling a olittle bit though.

Babyroobs · 13/07/2019 19:55

There are some lovely places around Leicestershire to live. Leicester city centre however is awful and has really gone downhill in recent years.
