AIBU to give children cereal with no milk?!

All but one of my children hates milk (I do too so maybe it’s my fault?!).
So the eldest 2 fix their own breakfast - toast/fruit/fry up etc. The youngest generally has some sort of toast and fruit. My girl likes cereal (a multi grain type) but just wants to eat it from the bowl with no milk. For some reason this just feels wrong so we generally get something else. The odd time i just let her but somehow it doesn’t feel like she’s eating a proper breakfast! Should I just let it go or stick to just once in a while or just stop all together?!

We used to do that, we did it mostly with cheerios! It's fine and it can also be portable Smile

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/07/2019 11:08

My son has this most days, I find it very odd but he's lactose intolerant and he's never bothered to try a milk alternative on cereal.

Janus · 11/07/2019 11:09

Sorry, should add that she’s 11 and not a toddler so that’s why I feel she should be having something more ‘proper’.
Thank you Zeb, maybe I shouldn’t just let it go a bit!

My dd is like this, loves dry cereal but will have a glass of milk with it Confused
I’m the same as you, it doesn’t feel right so I either make her breakfast and put milk accidentally in her cereal or just give fruit and toast.
I don’t know why I feel this way about it, just doesn’t feel like a proper breakfast!

MinkyWinky · 11/07/2019 11:11

I never liked milk on cereal - it makes the cereal soggy and the milk sweet - yuck! I don't see a problem with it Grin

SimonJT · 11/07/2019 11:11

We don’t drink milk, sometimes my son has dry cereal, sometimes he chooses to have it with oat milk.

HellYeah90s · 11/07/2019 11:11

I don't drink milk either, and haven't done so since I was 4. I always have yogurt with cereal, love it!

Some people (ex flatmates, friends) think it was weird that I never have milk.

CamVegOut · 11/07/2019 11:12

2 of my 3 only eat dry cereal, would never put milk in it. No problem, who cares.

babysharkah · 11/07/2019 11:13

Mine have dry Cheerios all the time. With a glass of milk on the side. Why they can't combine the two I have no idea.

I used to have orange juice on my cornflakes, always hated milk.

We have more success with granola and yogurt, which I prefer them to have as it seems more substantial for a day at school.

username95 · 11/07/2019 11:14

I hate milk, so have been eating dry cereal since childhood!

Maybe you could try seeing if she likes an alternative such as vitamin enriched almond or oat milk instead if you are worried about calcium intake!

TheInebriati · 11/07/2019 11:15

You can get lactose free milk, I hate cows milk so use oat or almond milk instead.

sl07 · 11/07/2019 11:16

I had no milk on my cereal growing up - by choice. I see no problem with that :)

Comefromaway · 11/07/2019 11:17

My ds often eats cereal like that. Sometimes he will then drink a glass of milk or have a yoghurt with it so he gets the calcium etc from that.

Janus · 11/07/2019 11:17

I used to have orange juice on my cornflakes too, never met another!!! I hate milk so much so I understand how she feels. Think I’ll just go with it a couple days a week with a glass of juice and just rotate the other stuff she likes too. (Probably on the days we are in a rush!!! Grin).
Thank you!

I don't like milk so always ate cereal dry, with a glass of juice. Can't understand why anyone wants to eat cereal that goes soggy tbh. YABU to not let her have cereal without milk if that's what she wants.

As an adult I've gone off dry cereal but I sometimes have it with yoghurt instead.

LondonJax · 11/07/2019 11:39

We used to take dry cereal out with us if we were out for the day, as a snack for DS when he was younger. It stays fresh and he loved eating it on long car journey's - the sugar tends to settle the tummy too if there's a bit of car sickness feeling.

He still has a bowl of dry cereal sometimes when he comes in from school. He can do his homework and nibble at the same time.

RushianDisney · 11/07/2019 11:41

My DD loves eating dry cheerios, she thinks it's a massive treat Grin I don't think it's an unsuitable breakfast alongside something else, milk isn't an essential part of a humans diet.

mbosnz · 11/07/2019 11:41

Nope. She's eating breakfast, that's the main thing. (One of mine hates milk, but she has it with yoghurt instead.)

RainOrSun · 11/07/2019 11:45

Another one here with a child who eats dry cereal.

I love rice krispies with some raisins and choc spots stirred through. And if I'm feeling generous, some halved glace cherries too.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 11/07/2019 11:45

Dd has a glass of milk and dry cereal.

Ds just has dry cereal. (He doesn’t like milk.)

Cheerios actually have calcium in them. (I worry about ds’s calcium levels as he also doesn’t eat yoghurt.)

kateandme · 11/07/2019 11:49

could she have yoghurt with it.or have you tried any other milk.
my friend used to hate milk but wanted to soften the cereal so poure if on the drained it off!

kateandme · 11/07/2019 11:53

I’m mid 40s and I hate milk so always have my cereal dry......it makes me laugh when people comment on it, as in ‘why don’t you have milk on cereal?” Because I don’t like milk. “Yes, but why don’t you have it on cereal?” Confused DD also has dry cereal as she doesn’t like milk either.
