To think I probably can’t exercise at the moment

I’m too big. I am around 6 stone overweight.

I’ve tried couch 2 5 k and I can’t do it. I couldn’t swim at the size I am and tbh I am not great at swimming anyway.

Not sure why I’m posting really.

Aibu to just lose weight first?

Weight loss is mainly (80%) down to diet anyway. Lose enough weight that you can physically exercise safely and then start gently.

Good luck!

Wolfiefan · 10/07/2019 20:23

Weight loss is mostly about food. But exercise is good for improving your mood and keeping you motivated. Even if you just walk.

RedSheep73 · 10/07/2019 20:23

If you can get to the pool just walking through the water is great exercise. Also walking and Pilates are great options, you might not lose tonnes of weight but they make you feel better.

Sooverthemill · 10/07/2019 20:24

Walk. 10 minutes every day for a week then 15 for a week. Etc etc. Unless you have joint ( knee hip ankle) issues. Aquarobics?

Pringlemunchers · 10/07/2019 20:25

Are you looking for an excuse ? Of course you can ! Any more movement more than the you usually do ! ... Exercise.

RosaWaiting · 10/07/2019 20:27

What about walking? Couch to 5k sounds way too hard for a beginner.

cardibach · 10/07/2019 20:27

I’m probably 5 stones overweight. I’ve just lost a stone. I go the gym and do low impact aerobic exercise (cross trainer, bike, rowing machine) and weights twice a week (I’m there about an hour). The weights help to build some muscle which raises your metabolic rate. I also go for a walk of a couple of miles at least once a week. You can exercise. You just need to find something you feel comfortable with. Walking is excellent. Walk briskly for 20mins every day and you will get fitter quickly then be able to do other stuff. It’ll also help with the weight loss.

adaline · 10/07/2019 20:28

Weight loss is 80% diet anyway. Exercise helps but you can't out-exercise a bad diet.

Get out and go walking. Maybe borrow a dog from someone and take the dog out - mine has done wonders for my fitness. Gentle exercise plus a change in diet will see you making massive changes!

F2Feee · 10/07/2019 20:29

Hi op. Have you considered a keto diet. I have a friend who has done it and the results are simply amazing.

SuzieQQQ · 10/07/2019 20:32

Disagree with people saying weight loss is 80% food. Not for everyone. If I don’t exercise I don’t lose weight. Doesn’t matter how few calories I’m eating

StinkinDrink · 10/07/2019 20:33

If you can start with a more healthy diet, getting into a routine with it then that is a huge step! Could you maybe incorporate a walk to the shop to get your healthier food? Even just once a week to begin with is a huge achievement! I would try and start soon before the nights get darker in a couple of months as that will really unmotivate you to go out.... maybe I should take my own advice for my post partum wobble! Good luck with it lovely Smile

Sweetooth92 · 10/07/2019 20:37

Give starting exercise a go, you’ll be surprised how much is actually stamina vs weight related and it will change quickly in a few weeks.
Speak to your local gym, the staff at mine are so helpful and accommodating and will be able to recommend exercises/equipment and classes suitable for you, and ensure you don’t injure yourself in the process.

If this seems to daunting then walk! Doesn’t have to be far, but increase frequency and distance/time. Once you’ve done this then you can think about c25k again,

The main thing you need is a positive mental attitude! Tell yourself you can do it, take it steady and one step at a time and celebrate the little achievements. Break the bigger goal down into smaller, manageable targets, I.e. I want to loose a stone in the next 6 weeks. When I do I will go to the cinema to see x, reward yourself for hitting each mini goal-ideally not with food/drinks! And believe in yourself! Good luck xx

Ihatesundays · 10/07/2019 20:40

I would go walking. Still wear training shoes and make sure you are getting your heart rate up though.
I find walking is a big part of my exercise routine anyway and a good walk can burn calories.

Chloe9 · 10/07/2019 20:40

I can't get motivated to lose weight without the energy boost from exercise. So even Though it might seem backwards I start exercising first: I have been overweight in unfit and I've been overweight and fit. Yes my joints suffer a bit more at a higher weight but that's about it, and they suffer more sitting in the sofa overweight.

satsumaautumn · 10/07/2019 20:47

I'm around 6 stone overweight too and can definitely exercise... Is there something else going on? (e.g. arthritis etc). If you are physically unable to do much and don't know why- maybe go to the Dr's to rule out a health condition?

Running isn't for everyone but other activities (walking, aerobics, badminton, dance) are all good options. Are you sure you can't swim at the size you are now? Sorry if that sounds patronizing but just wondering if you have tried, or if it's an assumption? I find swimming to be the activity least affected by my size (the water carries a lot of my weight for me!)

Whether you're trying to lose weight or not, being active is great for health and mood :) just try to find something you like.

Good luck!

WonkoTheSane42 · 10/07/2019 20:50

I am much, much more than 6 stone overweight and I can exercise. It’s not much fun but I can do it. Swimming is the best kind of exercise for overweight people cause it’s non impact. Cycling too. Running is currently beyond me, but it’s not the be all and end all.

SandAndSeals · 10/07/2019 20:53

When I first starting exercising, I did the 30 day shred. I always remember Jillian Michaels shouting in the living room that she had 300-400 lbs people doing jumping jacks so you can do them too.

So no, you are not too overweight to exercise.

Gardenersnaptime · 10/07/2019 20:54

Couch to 5k is, by definition, for beginners. Although I suppose if you can’t even walk for half an hour it would be hard.
Assuming you can walk for half an hour do the couch to 5k but just increase your pace slightly when it says to run.
Then when you’ve completed the programme start again but this time try an gentle jog.
Very doable.
Aquarobics
Gentle exercises on YouTube
Pilates

And make some simple changes in your diet-eg cut out butter and oil, switch to wholemeal bread, pasta and rice, cut portions a bit and limit snacks.

Singleandproud · 10/07/2019 20:56

C25k was probably a bit ambitious to start with if you haven’t done anything in a while.

Exercise at home first, lots of videos on YouTube, I like refitrevolution for getting back into exercise, its a little like Zumba and I found it really improved my cardio. Then I follow it with C25K and Jillian Michaels DVD’s.

You could even use C25K indoors, walk around the house or march on the spot during the slow bits then walk up and down the stairs during the fast bits, its amazing how much you sweat just doing that. Then as your cardio gets better you could jog on the spot and run up and down the stairs before doing it outside. The bonus of doing it inside is that you can watch tv whilst you do it.

Whilst you cant exercise a poor diet exercising will tone you and discourage you from eating rubbish as you know you’ll undo all your hard work.

ohdearmymistake · 10/07/2019 21:18

Come off it that's just an excuse, unless your going to drip feed.

I do HIIT classes and there are some big ladies in there easily big as you and they do the classes several times a week.

No they didn't just start doing them they built up to them.

Being big isn't an excuse.

DareDevil223 · 10/07/2019 21:24

You can weight train. Any size person would benefit from that and you will lose inches and shape up also. Running, HIIT and high impact exercises usually aren't the best option if you are overweight, there is already lots of pressure on your joints.

Maybe strength training (home or gym) 3 times a week and a daily walk, be more active generally and then bild up and do ore as you lose weight and get fitter.

DareDevil223 · 10/07/2019 21:25

Build up and do more, apologies for typing fail!

Sunfull · 10/07/2019 21:31

You can exercise!! You just need to start small. Even 10 minutes of brisker activity than normal can help. Starting off at home with some light weights and a little cardio can make a huge difference.

themartinipolice · 10/07/2019 21:38

I am about 5 stone overweight and go to a bootcamp where we do HIIT - body resistance exercises, circuits etc. Doesnt really matter about my size as we all work at our own level. So I would say you definitely can do exercise and if it's daunting, start with walking or swimming. Even a walk around the block is better than sitting on the couch, if you move as much as possible that will help. I need to move as much as possible cos if I sit down then I eat! Slowly gaining better habits though and you can too, all the best.

Blonde87 · 10/07/2019 21:42

Shut the curtains put your favourite music on and have a little dance. Every night. You’ll be surprised how quickly it gets easier and how fit you will get xx
