To think I probably can’t exercise at the moment

I’m too big. I am around 6 stone overweight.

I’ve tried couch 2 5 k and I can’t do it. I couldn’t swim at the size I am and tbh I am not great at swimming anyway.

Not sure why I’m posting really.

Aibu to just lose weight first?

I'm in a similar position to some others here. Was about 5.5 stone overweight. I started with aqua aerobics as you can hide a lot in the water and I didn't feel so self-conscious. I now also go to the gym and walk. I don't think I'm ready to run yet, as I don't want to put too much pressure on my joints, but I'm definitely getting fitter and have lost 1.5 stone in the last couple of months.

The hardest part was getting started.

Look, I'm 18.5 stone and I go to the gym. Used to go swimming but it's too much faff. I mostly walk on the treadmill, use the cross trainer and the bike. You don't have to match anyone else's targets, just do it. When I first went the person doing my induction suggested aiming for a particular heart rate. Whatever speed you need to go at to get your heart rate raised for 20 minutes is what you need to do. Over time, you'll need to go faster/harder for the same effect.

But, don't expect the exercise to shift your weight. You need to sort out your diet for that.

Have a look on YouTube for Lesley sansome. She does walking workouts that you do in your living room. You can do the equivalent of 1 or 3 miles without leaving your house.

You do not have to torture yourself doing ridiculously hard things that other people say are exercise. I hate 30 day shred, I hate running, I hate all of this 'push yourself as hard as you physically can for 20 minutes so you feel like you're going to die'.

What I do like is going for a walk for an hour, getting out on my bike for an hour, going to the gym and doing the cross trainer and the bike for an hour. Like other PP have said, you don't need to be working crazy hard. Doing something you enjoy is better than pushing yourself too hard and giving up and doing nothing.

Of course you're not too big. Have you ever seen The biggest loser?

I was 5-6 stones overweight. I started off by walking and doing wii fit at home, then I bought some hand weights and started exercising with them.
There are lots of things you can do, just take care of your knees. How about aquafit if you have access to a swimming pool.?

I've done C25K on three separate occasions and lost not a single pound. For me weight loss is all about my diet.

I walked into a Body Combat class nearly 7 years ago with a BMI of 37 and nobody cared what size I was! It was a struggle and I was an uncoordinated mess (still am if you make me dance) but I kept at it and added different classes to the mix.
Today my BMI is 26, I run and do around 10 classes each week when I'm not at college (where I qualified as a gym and indoor cycling instructor).
Be brave and go to a class yourself, never let your fitness be dependent on someone else going with you. There are always easier options in every class I have been to and you will work harder doing them than sitting on the sofa feeling sorry for yourself.

Brisk walking will do wonders. Forget about anything more strenous until you've got somewhere with the weightless

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 11/07/2019 14:06

OP I have a bmi of 21, exercise regularly (cardio and weights) and can't do couch to 5k. I can barely run for 5 minutes, my body is just rubbish at it and I wonder how pepple can enjoy it.

Find a form of exercise that you enjoy and just do it. It will work wonders for your mood and motivation.

DaftAsABrush15 · 11/07/2019 14:13

My Mum has severe arthritis so exercise isn't top of her list. She's lost a lot of weight from just what she eats. By eating less or better you're doing a good job for your body. The more you lose then maybe you can try again don't push yourself. The fact that you're acknowledging this is a big step in itself. Good luck and well done so far!

Patte · 11/07/2019 14:27

Walking is exercise, if you can do that? I go to an aqua-gym class and there's been people in that class who were definitely at least 6 stone overweight (you're supported by the water so I guess that helps). So that might be something to try.

Also, don't think about the 6 stone too much, if you're like me it'll get you down. Think about getting a little bit lighter each month, and soon enough you'll be able to think about how far you've come rather than how far you have to go!

likeafishneedsabike · 11/07/2019 14:30

Low impact exercise all the way. Walking, walking in water, low impact equipment at the gym. You won’t regret getting started, I promise you.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 11/07/2019 14:38

I'm 6 stone overweight. I do weight lifting 3 times a week and I feel fantastic. I'm doing it to get stronger though, for weight loss you just need to eat less.

NannyR · 11/07/2019 14:46

I've been following second chance hiker on you tube recently, he's an American man who was 200+lbs overweight and he decided to thru-hike the Pacific crest trail in the US which is about 2500 miles. When he started in February, he was struggling to do 3 or 4 miles a week, now he's up to 17/18 mile days and having a whale of a time.

I know it's not really an option for most people to take a summer off and hike over 2000 miles but I'm finding him incredibly inspiring.
