To wonder why I'm so bloody tired all the time?

Am I? Children now sleep through (mostly!) and I work p/t. Otherwise I have a normal life! I probably do go to bed late (after 11ish) and kids wake up early.
I'm just so tired all the time, really struggle to get through the day awake. What can I do, apart from be more disciplined about bedtime? Has anyone overcome this? What helped?

Get a blood test. You could be low in iron.

NabooThatsWho · 09/07/2019 20:17

How is your diet?
Yes to an earlier bedtime, see if it makes a difference.

NavyBlueHue · 09/07/2019 20:17

Get your vit D checked too. I was like this.

Littlepond · 09/07/2019 20:19

Also check thyroid function

BIWI · 09/07/2019 20:20

Do you eat a lot of carbs?

justasking111 · 09/07/2019 20:21

Off to gp for some tests.

JugsAndSoap · 09/07/2019 20:24

I had this, turns out I was anaemic and had underactive thyroid. Get yourself checked out.

madasamarchhare · 09/07/2019 20:26

I’ve just had this. Literally would be asleep by lunchtime. I was busy but not excessively so. Turns out I am anaemic and possibly am coeliac too. Please go and get your bloods done I have noticed such an improvement.

Lovelymonkeyninetynine · 09/07/2019 20:27

Wow ok thank you everyone I wondered if it was just 'normal' but I'm off to the docs then.

I agree, get a blood test first. Could be anything from low iron level to thyroid problems.

Secondly, have a look at your diet. I cut out processed foods. If I buy something, it's not allowed to have more than 5 ingredients. And only have meat / fish 2x week.

I ensue I do some exercise daily (power walking or cycling) eve if it's just for 30,minutes with the DC! All this made a massive difference to my energy levels.

Ohdearthefootball · 09/07/2019 20:30

How old are you OP?

BertieBotts · 09/07/2019 20:30

Blood tests first port of call.

If that comes out normal - sleep. See if you can sort out your sleeping patterns and see if sleep becomes more satisfying.

If still an issue, start collecting all symptoms/niggles (even if you don't think it can possibly be related) and get another doctor's appointment and talk through all of them - they should know if there are red flags for anything that wouldn't show on a blood test, like sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, delayed sleep phase disorder, or psychiatric issues such as depression, anxiety or ADHD.

BertieBotts · 09/07/2019 20:31

Oh and diet was meant to be in with sleep Blush

MeanMrMustardSeed · 09/07/2019 20:32

If the children get up early (6?) and you’re not asleep until after 11, you may just need more sleep?

BiBiBirdie · 09/07/2019 20:33

We had this with DD, she is folic acid and iron deficient.
She's now on medication and we've overhauled her diet, she now eats lots of green veggies (so spinach, kale, broccoli) and oranges and orange juice. She's been told to eat less sugar too.
She's far better after a month.

Lovelymonkeyninetynine · 09/07/2019 20:34

I'm late thirties. Yes you're right, perhaps I just need more sleep! I might just get bloods done in case to rule anything else out as suggested and if all ok just go to bed earlier. Thank you 😊

Alcohol disrupts sleep patterns Confused

GrandmaSharksDentures · 09/07/2019 21:48

Try going to bed earlier for a week and see how you feel then?
You admit you go to bed late & get up early, why would you assume blood tests are needed?

PoptartPoptart · 09/07/2019 22:24

Before going to the doctor to request blood tests how about going to bed an hour earlier for a week or so and then see how you feel?

Going to bed ‘after 11’ and getting up early with the kids, plus working part time and running a house is going to be tiring... try getting some more sleep!

The recommended ‘average’ amount of sleep for healthy adults is approx 7-8 hours a night, but everyone is different and you may just need more than you’re getting.

Goostacean · 09/07/2019 22:30

Stop screen time before bed. I did this for a while and slept soooo much better. Have slipped back into bad habits, hence being online now... do as I say, not as I do!

Sunshineonleith12 · 09/07/2019 22:31

Keep a note of what you're actually eating and how much you're drinking each day.

Adoptthisdogornot · 10/07/2019 00:20

Any other symptoms, e.g weight gain, hairless, etc?

Adoptthisdogornot · 10/07/2019 00:20

*hairloss

Herocomplex · 10/07/2019 00:22

Are you drinking enough water?
