To ask when you started weaning?

I waited till 6 months with DD1, but DD2 is showing lots of interest in food at 4.5 months - interested to see when others started?

OP posts:
Macaroni46 · 08/07/2019 16:50

11 weeks but that was 22 years ago! DD was starving and quite honestly I'm not sure how either she or I would've coped leaving it any later.
DD2 was 16 weeks.
Tbh I find these very late starts to weaning a bit odd but realise I am out of date!

Macaroni46 · 08/07/2019 16:50

Also meant to say, do what feels right. If she's showing interest in food then I'd go for it!

Elphame · 08/07/2019 16:57

About 10 weeks on my HV's advice - when mine were young 12 weeks was the recommended date to start solids.

DS was also finding milk was not enough.

username78990 · 08/07/2019 17:11

4 months 2 years ago. Just got breakfasts and milk and then slowly introduced homemade purées for dinner.

2littleninjas · 08/07/2019 17:13

I started weaning my twins when they were about 5 months old

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 08/07/2019 17:17

Six months, under that they can only have food that is less calorie dense than milk and limited due to allergens, so no point, may as well wait until six months and you can give them almost anything. Toy also have to make sure they can sit add have lost the tongue thrust reflex or they're not really eating anyway, just spitting it out

Constance1234 · 08/07/2019 17:17

We started at 6 months on the dot, but gave little tiny tastes of things from about 5 months or so.

GPatz · 08/07/2019 17:17

6 months.

EmrysAtticus · 08/07/2019 17:20

One week before six months as he was grabbing food from our plates

Toska · 08/07/2019 17:23

Six months. I trusted the NHS to provide my antenatal care, deliver my baby and administer vaccinations so I was definitely going to follow their advice about weaning.

nobreakfastforme · 08/07/2019 17:25

24 weeks as he was showing all 3 signs of readiness.

aliceelizaloves · 08/07/2019 17:36

I waited until 6 months with ds but he didn't really eat anything until 7.5. 5.5 months with ds because she was grabbing t out my my hands so I just let her and she ate everything for months. She is now quite fussy whereas my son will eat anything.

TabbyMumz · 08/07/2019 17:38

12 weeks as was the advice then.

DramaAlpaca · 08/07/2019 17:38

I followed the guidelines that were in place at the time, so with DS1 who was born in 1993 I started at just over three months. By the time DS2 arrived in 1995 it had changed to four months, and it was the same for DS3.

I haven't a clue how I'd have kept them going with just breastfeeding until 6 months, but no doubt I'd have tried to if I'd had my children after 2003 when the guidelines changed to six months.

Whatsername7 · 08/07/2019 17:39

Dd1 was 17 weeks. We had a tough start, bf failed (lactation failure) she would only drink tiny amounts of milk, had colic due to lactose sensitivity. She dropped 2 centiles which she didnt make up, got to 16 weeks and started losing again. GP advised weaning. We never looked back. Dd2 was 5.5 months when she grabbed some toast from my plate and started chomping.

babysharkah · 08/07/2019 17:53

4.5 months on paediatric advice for reflux. They were 32 weekers so couldn't sit properly and it was a pain. Would have been much easier to just chuck food in a tray for them! It did help the reflux though.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/07/2019 17:55

1st baby 12 weeks, 2nd and 3rd probably a couple of weeks later. I think my grandchildren were introduced to solids at 3-4 months.

Teddybear45 · 08/07/2019 17:56

6 months. Early weaning’s only ever appropriate when milk doesn’t work for whatever reason. If the baby is gaining weight on milk then you should wait.

Bibijayne · 08/07/2019 17:57

Couple of days before six months.

nevernotstruggling · 08/07/2019 17:57

^this 100%

TillyTheTiger · 08/07/2019 17:59

Exactly six months, as per the latest guidance at the time (which will probably change again soon). DS wasn't a big puree fan and didn't like being spoon fed but loved baby led weaning.

Peanut91 · 08/07/2019 18:00

Around 6 months but as PP above my DS didnt really eat anything until 7.5/8 months

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 08/07/2019 18:00

6 months with both of mine, although I let them gum things they nabbed from about 5 months or so.

Doje · 08/07/2019 18:01

6 months, as per the current advice from the NHS.

Don't do what 'feels right' (sorry PP) do what the experts tell you, which is 6 months unless advised otherwise.

Chwaraeteg · 08/07/2019 18:06

24 weeks with first baby. She absolutely wolfed down her food too, I honestly wished I'd listened to my instincts about when she was ready and weaned maybe a month or so earlier.

Second baby, I weaned at 21 weeks. It's a good job I did too because it became immediately obvious she had allergies and had been reacting through my breastmilk. We finally found out why her weight had dipped and she had been screaming non- stop since birth. It also meant that she saw allergy specialists and the dietician early on.

The strange thing is, the dieticians, allergy specialists and GP's I have seen have seen no issue with weaning prior to 6 months: as long as it's not done before 17 weeks.
