To say that women often look better as they age!

I keep hearing that men get better with age! Society seem to promote this belief and at the same time, suggest that women get worse with age!

AIBU to challenge this? At almost 40, I have DC that sleep, disposable income to spend on skin care, treatments, clothes and hair! I have time for a proper exercise routine. I definitely look better now than at 30.

So where does this ridiculous saying come from? AIBU to suggest it is absolutely untrue and lots of women do actually get better with age Grin

Totally agree OP.

When I was young I looked witchy. Now I've grown into my bone structure I am much happier with how I look.

I've got about five years before I look like a crone Wink

raspberryk · 06/07/2019 23:20

I am 32 and I look old as fuck, compared to even 5 years ago. It's been downhill from 21 I would say.

Sheepdog100 · 06/07/2019 23:27

I don’t think men (obviously with the odd exception) age particularly well looks wise. That’s a myth. They may be more mature but they certainly don’t look better than they did in their 20’s and 30’s

I actually think that men and women age the same but women have the advantage of not losing hair and can use make up and other extras to help maintain a good look.

Peak for me is 25-35 for both sexes

NamelessGem · 06/07/2019 23:27

I’m in my early twenties and I have to say OST women I see in their 40s plus are always the most beautiful - there’s an air of confidence that brings beauty, not make up or clothes or anything else. But seeing a 40 something so happy in her own skin really makes me think ‘wow, that’s attractiveness’

Ohyesiam · 06/07/2019 23:32

I went to a 20 year nursing reunion and got asked if I’d had work done. Apparently I’d either improved or this person had never noticed I’m beautiful before?!

Benjispruce · 06/07/2019 23:33

Best thing is your eyes get worse and you think you look better.....until you put your specs on!

Hooleywhipper · 06/07/2019 23:37

At 49 I feel better about myself than I did 15 years ago, so ‘I’ feel I look better....hope that makes sense.

riotlady · 06/07/2019 23:37

I think the idea that men get better looking with age only really applies to men who were already incredibly good-looking, like George Clooney, not regular Dave who’s just gets fatter and balder

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2019 23:40

"only really applies to men who were already incredibly good-looking, like George Clooney"

He wasn't considered that good looking in his youth actually.

Sheepdog100 · 06/07/2019 23:41

Exactly riotlady. Average Joe who was average at 20 is still average at 60 but usually balder, fatter and often more miserable.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2019 23:41

"When I was young I looked witchy."

Witchy? Big nose, black teeth and a pointy hat???

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2019 23:42

"Average Joe who was average at 20 is still average at 60 but usually balder, fatter and often more miserable"

I don't think bald and fat are the most unpopular physical characteristics for men though. I even think bald looks good if the man shaves the remaining hair.

Really? I thought everyone fancied him on ER

I looked best in my mid 30s,still not old, looked good and had the confidence added that made the difference.
I am a good ten years older than my DDS friends mums but looks wise you now can't tell the difference mostly because I am sailing in the calm waters of the menopause on the right amount of her and they are mostly in the middle of it.

wasnotwasweregood · 06/07/2019 23:56

@flingingmelon totally agree, took me 40 years to grow into my cheekbones. I just asked DH when I looked my best, after looking shifty with an 'oh crap is this a test?' expression, he reckons 20s and now for my best bits. I fell into the Mum-bob trap in my 30s and dressed to disappear.

Sunshine93 · 07/07/2019 00:02

I suspect one of the problems is we are programmed to see famous women after millions of pounds of surgery, men don't bother and just dying their hair seems amazing!

My mum is a beautiful 64 year old and when you look at men her age on match.com you can't believe they are her age. She has definitely aged better than them.

The worst of it is that plenty of these old looking men in their 60s request women age 34-55! if I am ever on a dating website in the future I vow categorically to rule out any man who doesn't look for women in his own age bracket

SinglePringle · 07/07/2019 00:03

I definitely look better aged 49 than 39.

Confidence is a vastly underrated beauty tool.

And I’m also more style confident (AKA ‘Give a shit if you don’t like my look’) and have money to throw at the situation. Better hair cuts, colour, understanding my face re make up, more frequent facials etc.

I don’t look 40 but I don’t look 50

lilpumpsmum · 07/07/2019 00:04

Renee zellweger (that's who played Bridget Jones, right?) omg I saw her in that new Netflix series what/if and she has aged SO beautifully. I couldn't believe it was her!

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 07/07/2019 00:06

I think women are more comfortable in their skins as they age.

WorraLiberty · 07/07/2019 00:10

I think it's an individual thing and not something people can generalise on really.

People may say that men get better with age but in reality I think that's because grey hair tends to suit most men better than it does most women (just my personal opinion).

When men's hair starts to get thin or fall out, they can often look great with it shaved short or shaved off completely - this is not a look that tends to suit most women with thinning hair.

I know a few men and women I used to go to school with, who look better now (aged around 50) but I think on the whole, most people tend to look better when they're younger.

That's not to say those people aren't attractive in their fifties, but you asked about looking better.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2019 00:46

"Really? I thought everyone fancied him on ER"

Go back to when he was on Roseanne.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/07/2019 00:59

Ha ha - I looked shit between 18-25! Now at 36
Look you n than at 25. Not in a deluded way, just better skin, happier, more relaxed, better nourished = less wrinkles.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/07/2019 01:00

you n = younger Hmm

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 07/07/2019 01:09

Only woman I know that looks better is my sister

She looks great at 51 and prettier than when she was younger

I haven’t aged well
