Worst stomach bug in the world. Nurse on phone suggested I go to A&E

Aibu to not go? Surely there's not a lot that can be done for an adult woman who has severe diahorrea for the past 3 days ? I've had a fever but paracetamol takes it down again. I feel horrific in that my back and my stomach are absolutely killing. When I get a cramp in doubled over in pain but surely this isn't worth an A n E trip? I've been sipping dioralyte as my wee is orange in colour. But it's coming out of me quicker than I can put it back. Just don't know what to do!

111 will always advise you to go to A&E to cover themselves.

You know now that it could be serious esp if you become dehydrated or you may have a serious condition causing this.

However, hospitals also ask that you stay away when you have a bug like this that's not that serious as you could infect vulnerable patients and cause them significant harm.

As you have no way of knowing you might as well go to A&E to get checked out properly just to err on the side of caution although Saturday night is never as good time to go.

QueenofPain · 06/07/2019 22:26

If it’s an infective diarrhoea (likely if you’ve got a fever) then definitely don’t take anything to bung you up. Your body needs it out. Keep drinking fluids.

NewDOOFUSfor19 · 06/07/2019 22:35

A&E nurse here! Happy to see you've taken the advice on board and have headed to the department. I know we are always told not to attend hospital if you have hospital but that's really advice for those visiting or outpatient appointments to stop it spreading.
3 days of severe d&v can be really dangerous, your renal function can suffer due to dehydration and your electrolytes can be thrown off which can cause all sorts of complications. I hope they get you sorted and you feel better soon!

glasshalf · 06/07/2019 22:40

Hope you're ok op

StinkinDrink · 06/07/2019 22:45

Sounds awful Flowers I hope you made it there accident free and get sorted out ASAP!

goingtotown · 06/07/2019 23:13

Why did you ring 111 if you choose to ignore their advice.

PerspicaciaTick · 06/07/2019 23:24

I hope the journey goes OK and you are seen quickly. The only time I've experienced anything like you've been suffering I ended up in hospital with sepsis. ICU, 6 weeks in a side room, 4 months off work, had to learn to walk again. I wish the GP had told me to go to hospital when I saw him rather than waiting another 48 hours and it all getting rather emergency-ish.

tolerable · 07/07/2019 00:05

op- I hope you get sorted and manage the journey without"event"..you aren't driving no?//let us know aupdate.get well soon xx

LoafofSellotape · 07/07/2019 00:12

Please ring ahead and let them know you're on you're way so you don't pass it round the waiting room if you've got a bug!

notapizzaeater · 07/07/2019 00:17

Hope hospital have you hooked up to IV fluids, that alone might help you feel better

donajimena · 07/07/2019 00:24

My dear friend used to post on Facebook up until he passed away. You can be seriously ill and still work your thumb.

QuiteForgetful · 07/07/2019 00:34

I did on Monday. I had v&d 3 days and dh took me. They took blood samples and x-rays, and gave me fluids and anti nausea meds via iv, and once I could keep water down, released me.

KitKatCHA · 07/07/2019 00:38

I once read a post on FB about a friend's husband who was very ill in hospital. She said he placed a bet 15 mins before he passed. Saying people aren't poorly enough if they can post online is bollocks.

QuiteForgetful · 07/07/2019 00:43

This> And DO NOT FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S HOLY EVEN CONSIDER TRUSTING A FART!
Also, bring something to puke in, and dress comfy. I went wearing pj's & robe and slippers.

QuiteForgetful · 07/07/2019 00:44

PS They gave me sugar in the iv as well. (I am still not too with it and left that out by mistake)

littlebillie · 07/07/2019 00:54

I hope you are okay and they are looking after you.

Toughtips · 07/07/2019 01:51

I made it there accident free. Sat on a bin bag and towel with spare clothes incase. They couldn't isolate me as they had no isolation spaces available. Got seen to at 9 had an ECG as heart rate was on the high side n that easy fine then got wheeled into majors and barried which meant I could only go to the toilet via bedpan. Was hooked up to a drip too to rehydrate and left to it to doc was available to rule anything out in bloods. Bloods came back fine just an inflammatory marker so was free to go after two buscapan. Finally home now n just letting it take its course. Still on the toilet with cramping and bad diahorrea but least I know it's nothing serious. Will make sure I keep hydrated and hope it goes away asap! Thnks everyone x

OneStepSideways · 07/07/2019 09:04

Get well soon, glad it's not something nasty 💐

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 08/07/2019 12:57

Eccelenté!

Toughtips · 08/07/2019 13:23

Thanks all. Still suffering. On buscopan for the cramping. Never had pain like it for a bug. Still got runs but off work resting hoping it'll be gone soon! Never had a stomach bug last this long.

TantricTwist · 08/07/2019 13:27

mix a teaspoon each of salt and sugar into a glass of warm water which will help you rehydrate at home.

justasking111 · 08/07/2019 13:28

My son caught something like this in Egypt with his girlfriend. Still had it on and off six weeks later. Sent him to GP who said nothing but water for 24 hours. I had told him the same but did he listen sigh... that shifted it. The bug cannot live on zero calories. So as bad as it sounds nothing but electrolyte water for the next day or so. You can make your own with sugar and salt. Cannot recall the exact amount.

mrsbyers · 08/07/2019 13:41

Go,

I ignore advice and now suffer serious kidney issues it is vital to get your electrolytes balanced and rehydrated. You may actually be making yourself worse drinking diahoralite as when dehydrated potassium levels can concentrate
