Worst stomach bug in the world. Nurse on phone suggested I go to A&E

Aibu to not go? Surely there's not a lot that can be done for an adult woman who has severe diahorrea for the past 3 days ? I've had a fever but paracetamol takes it down again. I feel horrific in that my back and my stomach are absolutely killing. When I get a cramp in doubled over in pain but surely this isn't worth an A n E trip? I've been sipping dioralyte as my wee is orange in colour. But it's coming out of me quicker than I can put it back. Just don't know what to do!

protect the seat with a binbag and a towel.
good luck

CaptainCabinets · 06/07/2019 16:43

I had this last week and I didn’t go to A&E but I wish I had. I spent 6 days at home in agony instead Sad

ohfourfoxache · 06/07/2019 16:44

Do as you’re told!

Seriously, they wouldn’t tell you to go if it wasn’t needed.

And the quicker you get there on a Saturday the better - you don’t want to be stuck in the waiting room with a load of drunks.

Quick, go NOW

Gingeraledrinker · 06/07/2019 16:45

Not sure how things work in UK but when I had worst stomach bug in world (to the point where I was collapsed on bathroom floor ) a doctor came out and gave me an injection, and from that point on I felt immediately better and my stomach calmed down etc.

So they may be able to offer you something similar in a&e?

Not sure how you are meant to cope with the journey when you are vomming and
pooing uncontrollably though?

Hope you feel better soon op!

orangeshoebox · 06/07/2019 16:46

now is a good time as england is playing the football

SummerHouse · 06/07/2019 16:47

I totally understand why you would ask. It's a dilemma and you wonder if it's really worth it or they are being overly cautious. Sitting in A and E with diarea is not ideal. But I think you should go. Get well soon.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 06/07/2019 16:49

I don't understand seeking medical advice and then ignoring it. It's limited how much assessment you can achieve by telephone - what did you hope they would say?

Weebitawks · 06/07/2019 16:49

I'm pretty sure I had the same thing last year. It lasted about 6 days. Couldn't eat a thing, severe cramps, couldn't trust a fart.

I called my GP who didn't want me anywhere near the place. They said there is a bug going round that was lasting ages. With regards going to the hospital, tbh I don't think you'd be a priority once you got there and would obviously run the risk of shitting/puking in less than comfortable surroundings (I found I was often shitting on the toilet and puking in the sink in synchronisation) although I'm no expert and I can understand the person at 111 wanting to rule out anything more sinister.

Tbh, DH got me some rehydration tablets and I found water, lucozade and nibbling the corner of a ginger but while taking paracetamol where the only things that got me through

Just speaking from my own experience. I feel you though, was truly the worst experience of my life. I knew I was on the mend when I got my appetite back.

Weebitawks · 06/07/2019 16:50

KnittingForMittens · 06/07/2019 16:50

This is probably not relevant but is there any chance you could be pregnant? As those symptoms you mentioned also point towards an ectopic pregnancy. You really do need to go A&E though! I hope you're on your way there or at least there already!

Weebitawks · 06/07/2019 16:52

I've just remembered, I did go in on day 4/5. Not to the hospital but to GP after I called again. The doctor didn't run any tests. I think they said it has to get to 10 days before they do anything.

Amibeingdaft81 · 06/07/2019 16:52

The fact that you’ve been told to go and yet you don’t feel that there’s a real need - indicates to me that you’ve exaggerated your pain to us.

When in the kind of pain - you seek professional help.

You don’t want to. So I can’t believe it is that bad

Weebitawks · 06/07/2019 16:53

Oh fuck I didn't even think about eptopic pregnancy (and definitely a no in my case ( ignore my ramblings and go. Feel better.

Toughtips · 06/07/2019 16:53

@webitawks

Yeah it's only been this bad since yesterday too so feel like I'm on the crest. It was the awful cramps that made me call 111 to check at I've never had a bug quite like it.

I did eat yesterday as I was hungry so probably shouldn't of done. I just think a n e is for real emergencies and don't want to risk crapping myself while waiting to be seen.

minisoksmakehardwork · 06/07/2019 16:55

@Toughtips - you may find they keep you separate from other patients. They won't want to risk spreading a bug.

Toughtips · 06/07/2019 16:55

That's what I mean though. Am I just being a huge drama queen cos I've not been sleeping properly?! Probably do. I'm in bed so going to keep sipping my water n see how I get on

STOP making wimpish excuses and go and do as you've been advised OK and DO IT NOW!!!

Elderflower14 · 06/07/2019 16:57

If they tell you you should go then go!!! I'm sure they can isolate you somewhere!

Mammajay · 06/07/2019 16:57

You must go. If it is food poisoning it could be very dangerous.

BritWifeinUSA · 06/07/2019 17:03

Why did you call for medical help if you’re not going to follow the advice? What did you expect them to say? A medical professional has said you should go to hospital but you’d rather go online and ask a bunch of untrained strangers what to do? What’s the matter with you?

Amibeingdaft81 · 06/07/2019 17:03

OP

Just had a squizz at your history

You start a thread in March about feeling so I’ll like you’ve been “hit by a tonne of bricks”

Then another about the “horrific” eczema you suffer from

Then another about the “horrific” cold you’re suffering from

And was about 10% through your posts before I got bored.

I suspect you are prone to hyperbole

dottiedodah · 06/07/2019 17:04

Phone them again ,and tell them of your worries .They will be able to advise you of .If you have Back pain this could be kidney problems TBH you need medical help ,you could have food poisoning !Hot foot it ASAP!

Weightissues · 06/07/2019 17:05

Tell them you need to be in a separate room
There may be vulnerable patients there and a bug could be fatal
They should put you in a sep area

stillmoving · 06/07/2019 17:06

I'm in bed so going to keep sipping my water n see how I get on

So you called 111 and ignored their advice.

You asked Mumsnet, who agreed with 111 and ate ignoring this also.

Why did you post?

GertrudeCB · 06/07/2019 17:06

I've had salmonella. Horrendous. Needed morphine and IV fluids. Was in 5 days, ended up passing blood. Just go.
