Yes they are. Most f the time I changed DD on a towel or changing mat, just had a box downstairs with some nappies, wipes, cream etc and another upstairs.

BarberBabyBubbles · 06/07/2019 13:58

Ask them! Getting furniture you don’t want is not helpful. I didn’t want one of these but other people will like them. Please just ask them.

Byebyefriend · 06/07/2019 13:58

I just put a mat on an ordinary chest of drawers.

Thebig3 · 06/07/2019 13:59

I agree just ask. I have one that I used with all 3 of mine. I found it helpful to change them on after baths and in the morning etc

UnderOverUnderRover · 06/07/2019 13:59

Ask them. I wouldn't have liked it, I just changed dd's on a change mat that went behind the couch when not used.

cardibach · 06/07/2019 13:59

It’s a chest of drawers, great if they need storage. What makes them a ‘baby changing top’? Wouldn’t any chest if the right height with a changing mat work?

user1480880826 · 06/07/2019 14:01

Waste of money. You can change babies just about anywhere. If they have a small flat then a low rise chest of drawers is the last thing they need.

crocodileshavenoears · 06/07/2019 14:03

I had one from Ikea (don't know if they still do them - DS is now 11!) with a fold-out changing bit, so once he was too big to change on it we could keep it folded in and it was just a normal chest of drawers with a display shelf on the top. It lasted about 9 years and probably would have done longer if I was better at buidling flat-pack furniture!
Probably safest to ask them first though.

thedevilcamefromthehimber · 06/07/2019 14:04

I bought one and hardly ever used it tbh.

Mammajay · 06/07/2019 14:05

Thanks..I was slightly lured by the lovely John Lewis nursery stuff. I think we used to change on the bed or floor but can't really remember. There seems to be so much baby stuff now.

I sit on the floor with my baby. He can’t roll off the floor!

HollyGoLoudly1 · 06/07/2019 14:07

I got one and I love it - but we needed drawers for the baby's room anyway so made sense to get one with a changing table top. Definitely ask and they could pick for themselves. Ours matches the other furniture so a random set wouldn't have worked for us.

This x100. I like mine, but I'm not your son or DIL.

I had one I used for all 3 of my own kids and for children I used to childmind. I still have it - my eldest is 14, youngest 8 - we removed the detachable changing mat and it was dc2s and then later dc3's cupboard as a small toddler - perfect for age 2-3 (ours isn't drawers but shelves with wardrobe doors) and I now use it to store bed linen. I never, ever changed nappies on the floor or any other surfaces when at home, and never really understood why people do that, but I'm aware they do...

I had 3 cesarean sections do if I'd tried to change a nappy on the floor I'd have had to spend the rest of the day on the floor - that perhaps set the tone and got me in the habit of using the mat on top of the chest of drawers.

Ours is German and massive so I used it until the children were out of nappies each time, not just in the newborn months - the changing surface was huge. It made a brilliant toddler wardrobe too, just the right size for a toddler to choose and take out their own clothes to encourage them to dress themselves.

Whetherits a waste of money depends how you live and whether you use it obviously - lots of baby gear other people love and think is essential (baby bath, double buggy when you have dc2, Moses basket, those weird nappy wrapping machine bins, TV baby monitors) I think are a waste of money and never had and never missed.

Horses for courses and all that but ours was not a waste of money and is well used!

BarberBabyBubbles · 06/07/2019 14:08

My lovely MIL offered to buy the pram for us with our first - if that’s an option for you? She let us choose of course telling me to get whichever I wanted. So kind of her.

DuchessSybilVimes · 06/07/2019 14:09

I love mine. I'm tall, changing on the bed or floor hurts my back and is a hassle. The changing top means the mat doesn't slip off and I can wedge wipes, nappy cream, baby clothes in round the edge. It's a three drawer unit, with lovely deep drawers so I can fit loads in. All nappy changing stuff goes in the top drawer, all of dd's clothes fit in the bottom two.

Dd1 had it before this, when she outgrew the changing top it was a great place to wedge in all her soft toys, and they couldn't fall out!

EmrysAtticus · 06/07/2019 14:10

Had one and I loved it and it was so much easier on my back. Now that DS is 3 I have removed the changing top bit and just use it as a chest of drawers for his clothes. It's very handy :)

mrsnair · 06/07/2019 14:10

Waste of money. I just change my DC on a towel on the bed!

DuchessSybilVimes · 06/07/2019 14:13

mrsnair what happens if they wee? Mine can easily do a wee big enough to go through a towel!

SparklesandFlowers · 06/07/2019 14:15

I got given a changing table with shelves. I found it very useful. However, I wouldn't have spent money on one. All DS's nursery furniture is second-hand. Babies don't really need much new stuff. Save your money for nappies/clothes/car seat or something imo.

Parker231 · 06/07/2019 14:19

I used the bed if I was upstairs or on a changing mat if I was downstairs.

BeanoBrown · 06/07/2019 14:24

I could never understand why anyone would put a baby on a high surface, as soon as they can roll you'd never be able to take your eyes or hands off them for fear they've fall off?
I just used floor or my bed with a towel and changing mat. That way it wasn't a rushed affair.

DuchessSybilVimes · 06/07/2019 14:28

Because I don't need to take my eyes off them! They are on the top in front of me, and all the nappy paraphernalia is in the drawer underneath them, also right in front of me. Plus the deep 'dip' on the top means they'd have to roll over a three inch high vertical bit of wood. Not impossible, but certainly more of a challenge!

BumandChips · 06/07/2019 14:37

Ask them surely? You can’t just buy people furniture.

They’re a waste of money IMO, we used a changing mat on the floor. I kept it under DS’s bed. We had one downstairs and one upstairs.

Oldraver · 06/07/2019 14:43

I didnt have one with drawers just a very basic table with two shelves..it was a godsend for someone with a dodgy back who cant bend down to much,Though I also kept a mat downstairs for daytime use.

DS was also in cloth nappies which do need some storage space.

13 years later DS uses it as a tv stand and the shelves are used for DVD's games etc.

Like others have said ask...some people will find them useful others not. I bought a basic one, but I have also used a standard set of drawers in my own bedroom
