We had one which was used for both DC. I always used it, no nappy changes on the lounge floor. It was then used as a chest of drawers in DSs bedroom until he was ~10yo, so definitely didn’t owe us anything.

katewhinesalot · 06/07/2019 14:47

Changing mat was no problem. I'm in the waste of money camp.

Merryoldgoat · 06/07/2019 14:51

I love mine and my husband too - we find it much easier and I like the extra storage.

ChillyB · 06/07/2019 14:51

I don’t have one, I have a mat that fits over the top of the cot and I just have a kitchen trolley from Ikea with nappies etc next to it. Until we moved DS’ nursery was a tiny box room though so I didn’t have space for anything separate.
I also have never bothered trailing upstairs to change him as I also keep a stash of things downstairs and just change him on a mat on the floor. So the upstairs equipment hasn’t been used that much.

Babdoc · 06/07/2019 14:51

Complete waste of money, and probably a nuisance in a small flat with limited space! Once the baby is big enough to wriggle, they’re dangerous, as they could fall off.
Far safer to have a nice waterproof changing mat on the floor. Baby can’t fall, and the mat can be easily stored away under a chair or bed.
The mat is also portable for use when travelling- just roll it up and stick it in the changing bag.
New parents get lured by advertisers into buying all sorts of unnecessary crap - it’s a major industry, but you don’t have to get sucked in!

Meangirls36 · 06/07/2019 15:35

Quite dangerous do it on the floor they can't fall off anything only takes a second to happen. You don't know when they are going to start rolling.

avocadotofu · 06/07/2019 15:35

We didn't use ours for long. It's a lot easier to change our little one on the floor or the bed.

Meangirls36 · 06/07/2019 15:37

Get a really nice buggy worth their weight in gold.

reluctantbrit · 06/07/2019 15:49

I had one, actually from John Lewis, and loved it. We never changed on the bed or floor, far too uncomfortable and gross in my opinion and it meant I had everything i needed directly next to me.

We had the chest of drawers until DD was nearly 6 and we re-did her room.

Zhx3 · 06/07/2019 15:50

I bought an Ikea one similar to this:

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/sundvik-changing-table-chest-of-drawers-grey-brown-50424006/

... however I wouldn't have paid £140 for it! I think ours was about £40 on eBay. We still have it and use it as a chest of drawers. Worked well for all of my dc.

MumUndone · 06/07/2019 16:17

I LOVE my changing table, using the floor or bed does my back in. I don't have one with drawers though, and we actually have it in the front room, where we spend most of our time. It's like this one:

MumUndone · 06/07/2019 16:19

When we were in a flat we had it against a side wall in the hallway.

Mammajay · 06/07/2019 17:02

Son mentioned possibly getting one but with drawers but opinion here is very divided. I will tell them to think about it!

I had one from Ikea (don't know if they still do them - DS is now 11!) with a fold-out changing bit, so once he was too big to change on it we could keep it folded in and it was just a normal chest of drawers with a display shelf on the top.

We had the same one - secondhand off eBay. It did two kids and is still being used, 11 years on, as a chest of drawers.

I preferred to have all the changing stuff in the baby’s room and not scattered all over the house, so it worked for me. And the rolling thing is fine, I had everything within arms reach in the drawers, so never had to leave the baby and risk them falling.

feelingsicknow · 06/07/2019 17:23

I loved ours - table top changing with shelves underneath. We assembled it and kept it downstairs for the first few months, and then when he started being able to roll, I just changed him on the floor. We've dismantled it now and keep it in the original box in the garage in case we have another. There were entire days when DS was really little where I didnt get back upstairs after coming down in the morning so it was great to have somewhere to change him. Plus his nursery wasn't really finished and kitted out until he was 6 months old (we co-slept) so having it downstairs was great. X

feelingsicknow · 06/07/2019 17:25

Loving life.

Not sure where to post. Are baby changing chest of drawers a waste of money?
AgnesNutterWitch · 06/07/2019 17:42

Ours is fab, I use it for every change (when we're in the house). I like having a designated place to change her. Plus it's a gorgeous piece of furniture.

jaseyraex · 06/07/2019 17:44

I love ours. Bought it before DS1 was born and used the changing top until he was almost a year old, then took the edges off so it was just a regular chest of drawers. I've used it again for DS2 and only just took the edges off again now that he is 10 months (he's much wrigglier than DS1 ever was!). I've never worried about them falling off because its not like they're ever left unattended on it. Also found it a god send in the early days as I had an emergency cesarean with both of them and the constant bending/sitting would have been too much. But definitely ask before you buy, no one likes pretending they love unwanted furniture!

GreenDragon75 · 06/07/2019 19:18

We had one with a detachable top with dd2. I loved it - really helped my back and knees. I didn’t have one first time round so have find both. It’s still I use now as ordinary drawers. Check with them first though as ours came as part of a set of nursery furniture. If not they might or have room

Shoemum · 09/07/2019 12:36

I think they are a waste of money, I change both of mine over my knee and that includes an active toddler who hates happy changes.

She gets changed the same way everytime regardless of where we are over my knee, no ifs no buts ;-)

BillywilliamV · 09/07/2019 12:39

Used to change my babies on the back wing of a Subaru Impreza, you really don’t need a specific bit of furniture, just a wipe clean matz

User8888888 · 09/07/2019 14:31

Loved mine and got another one for my second child but it is really personal and they might want other furniture to match so don’t just get one in isolation. I’d hate always changing on the floor. I had to do it when I was pregnant and couldn’t lift the toddler up anymore and found it really uncomfortable.

MindyStClaire · 09/07/2019 14:43

Love ours. We needed all the furniture for her room as there wasn't anything in it, so we got a chest of drawers with a changing thing on top from mothercare. When she's big enough, the changing bit comes off and it's just a normal chest of drawers. We have an ikea changing table downstairs with baskets on the shelves underneath with everything we need. I love both, they save my back especially when I'd just had a c section. DD rolls around and runs away when we change her on the floor, but she stays put on the changing tables.

However, I wouldn't want anyone to just buy furniture for me without me picking it, and if I was tight for space I'd be picking very carefully, and maybe going for the floor option.

SayWhatSayNot · 09/07/2019 14:46

Waste of space & money, although you could fill up the underneath with more stuff.

I preferred the floor, especially when DD wanted to wriggle away.

They would only have to sell it afterwards, I wouldnt bother personally.
