To dress like someone's nan... at 30?

But of a lighthearted thread so no offence intended to nans. I imagine you are all must trendier than me!
Anyway I was having a moan about clothes to my friend and she told me the shops I go to are for woman twice my age and that her nan has some of the same Monsoon tops as me.
I don't follow fashion so shop in high street stores like Monsoon, Wallis, Oasis and Banana republic. I dont have a style per say but dress smart casual for my work which sometimes spills in to my personal life.
I know It was an off the cuff comment but has really made me question my style. Are these 'nan shops'? What shops should a 30 year old professional be shopping in?

Have always found Monsoon and Wallis a bit Mumsy but not the others

merlotqueen · 06/07/2019 00:11

What does a 'nan' wear. Do tell. I will be a 'nan'. What must I wear?

I had no idea clothes were so ageist?

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 06/07/2019 00:14

I don't shop in Wallis or Monsoon and I'm 40, although I got a lovely Wallis jumpsuit recently in Littlewoods which is far from Mindy. But I like Warehouse, Oasis, River Island, H&M, and sometimes even Miss Selfridge... Etc.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 06/07/2019 00:15

*far from mumsy!

Snowy81 · 06/07/2019 00:17

I’m 38 and rarely find anything in Wallis or Monsoon there’s too much ‘older stuff’ for my liking. Oasis is hit and miss. I prefer Karen Millen. Then for t-shirts etc I head too River Island, Top Shop and NewLook. Then for slouches around the house, going for a walk etc, I wear Hollister and Victoria Secret Pink as it’s comfortable.

Snowy81 · 06/07/2019 00:17

I’m missed Warehouse- i like of their clothes too.

Fridaycantsleepdoh1 · 06/07/2019 00:18

I’m a similar age to you but don’t shop at those places as they are not my style but that doesn’t mean they are ‘nan’ shops.
I shop at river island , h&m, new look etc...:: Chuck a bit of primark in there too. Sometimes a next dress for work as well.
Most of my work dresses are from new look.

My friend gets gorgeous dresses for her little one from monsoon and my mum got a nice dress for a wedding from there once.
Wallis I’ve never stepped into..
If you are happy and comfortable that’s all that matters!

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/07/2019 00:19

Granny Chic, innit.

Mamagin · 06/07/2019 00:23

I'm not quite sure how a 'nan' dresses?
Are we comparing with our own dear Queen? Or with www.google.com/amp/s/amp.insider.com/baddiewinkle-badass-grandma-on-instagram-2016-6
Really, if you have to say 'no offence intended' then you must know that your question would be offensive.

MotherofaCat · 06/07/2019 00:25

Thanks for the input so far. I think it is the search for smart work blouses that dont show a hint of my 38E breasts that had lead me to these shops. It's got me thinking I should probably try and have more distinction between 'sensible work clothes' and 'fun, socialising clothes' I just have no idea what to wear that complements me!

Sorry to those who have taken offense. The nan comment is a direct quote from my friend which I thought summarised my explanation of wearing clothes that are targeted at woman twice my age. Obviously people should wear whatever they want but there are certain brands that market to a specific age group.

I am 48, most of my stuff is either TopShop, Primark, ASOS, or its vintage or from a hippy type shop, as wear Harem pants around the house and have some summer dress things made of recycled saris etc. However if you like it, and feel comfy in it then wear what you like. We are not all the same...

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/07/2019 00:29

M and S did no peep blouses. With extra buttons on the (?) placket.

BobTheFishermansWife · 06/07/2019 00:31

I'm 28 and off those shops you've listed, Wallis is the only one I don't own anything from. As per pps i have stuff from, new look, primark, river island, warehouse etc.

If you don't have a 'style' as such, I would book an appointment with a personal shopper, either freelance or in a department store like John Lewis, they can help you find stuff that suits your body shape as well as help discover your sense of style.

musicposy · 06/07/2019 00:32

I wouldn't shop in any of the shops you've mentioned because I think they're all too old for me and I'm in my early 50s (not a nan yet, thank goodness!).

But - I think you should wear what you like, what you think suits you, and clothes that make you happy. I'm sure people could criticise me for the opposite to you; "mutton dressed as lamb", but I don't care, I just wear what I like. If you like the clothes you're buying and feel good in them, carry on.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/07/2019 00:32

My nan shops at Bon Marche. I found myself browsing there the other day and couldn't find anything that I would personally wear (I'm 40). I would say Oasis and Warehouse are too young for me, so probably about right for 30.

BobTheFishermansWife · 06/07/2019 00:33

I mean the above if you're bothered by your friends comment.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/07/2019 00:33

Forgot to add my mum favours Wallis. She's 65.

MrsSarahSiddons · 06/07/2019 00:36

Just wanted to mention that it's 'per se' not 'per say'.

MitziK · 06/07/2019 00:41

Most Nans I see on the primary school run nearby wear mid length Primark leggings, big T shirts and ballet pumps. The ones that are over 40, anyway - the ones in their mid thirties wear much the same as everybody else.

If I were being blunt, I'd say you were wearing Social Worker clothes on the basis of the ones I see through work - and most of them are in their late twenties/early thirties.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 06/07/2019 00:42

I'd rather be a nan than mumsy. I guess it depends on the nan Grin

BirthdayDreamer · 06/07/2019 00:42

There's no "nan" shops, it's all about how you wear it. Yes some items are cut for the more mature woman rather than a teenager (or what the general populous of mature women and teenagers would generally wear - no hard and fast rules!) in terms of body shape, detail, finish etc and that's undeniable. I'm nearing "middle aged" and I shop everywhere, I don't care where the clothes come from as long as I like them and they make me happy. Dress to please yourself. If you are happy with your clothes and your look then carry right on. You don't have to fit into a mould or please someone else's opinion of what you should be. Having said that if you wanted to experiment then go right ahead. Basically it's your call!

AriadneCrete · 06/07/2019 00:45

I think Wallis is the only shop you mention that would be for an older crowd. Banana Republic is good for workwear. I love Oasis! I’m 28 and shop there regularly. I’ve gained a quite a bit of weight recently and they do some really flattering dresses.

I feel your pain about suitable work blouses. I’m 36H and have just given up.

Boinky · 06/07/2019 00:46

Tell people it's normcore and you'll suddenly be extremely hip.
