I'm 46 and my hair is definitely thinning significantly round the temples and hairline - there is less of it, and what there is is thinner and wispier than before. I'm having checks with the GP for menopause/perimenopause, but I wondered whether the Alpecin/Plantur 39 things were worth a try.... What do you guys thing? I was going to get some today but they're A TENNER a bottle, which stopped me for today.

THINK. What do you guys THINK?

It didn't work for me. Sorry!

OldUnit · 05/07/2019 20:11

I kind of don't see how it can work. I think it's a gimmick.

LittleBitAce · 05/07/2019 20:30

My hair was falling out so much (post partum) and after a terrible few weeks I shaved it off...

I'm now using 'Caffeine Shampoo' for the pound shop and my hair has literally grown 2 inches in 2.5 weeks!

Try that one instead

skybluee · 05/07/2019 20:43

I'd switch to a shampoo without sulphates, parabens, phthalates and mineral oil first.

Gingerkittykat · 05/07/2019 20:49

Nope, it's a waste of time.

I had hair falling out for a while, tried it and it seemed to grow back and GP said that hair had gone back into a growth cycle and it was a coincidence.

Second time it didn't do anything at all.

I saw a dermatologist who diagnosed a form of alopecia, androgenic alopecia after doing a scalp biopsy.

The only treatment is something called minoxidil, it's not available on prescription and is around £20 a month. It works for around 50% of people.

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/07/2019 20:53

does zero and does not seem to be good for hair, strips it

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 05/07/2019 20:56

I used Alpecin double effect for men and it did help. Not having massive amount of hair, but there is lots of new short ones. I also stopped colouring them few years ago. I think it's a lot baout massaging it in so maybe try to give yourself proper head massages. It reminded me of these "tone up skin" creams for 50 quid. If you spend 10 min on each tight with a cream for a fiver, you will still get results.

ShinyMe · 05/07/2019 21:38

Thanks! I'm kind of glad people think they don't work, as it would be months before I know whether it's making a difference. I'll stick to waiting for blood tests. Although I might as well try the poundland version in the meantime.

Look up the symptoms for underactive thyroid and see whetehr that could be a possibility.

bottomfellout · 05/07/2019 21:40

It doesn’t even claim to try and do anything. The only claim it makes is that it’s the number one selling shampoo in Germany.

Sunshine93 · 05/07/2019 21:42

It worked for my friend. He has more hair now at 36 than he did at 25. He swears by it.

Surely it's worth one tenner

SallyWD · 05/07/2019 21:43

I heard that the active ingredient in Regaine is effective for 85% of people. I'd give that a go.

Whyisitsodifficult · 05/07/2019 21:44

I use a supplement called biotin it’s definitely stopped my hair from falling out!

ShinyMe · 05/07/2019 21:45

@MereDintofPandiculation yes, they said they want to test for that too, just in case. My mother has/had an underactive thyroid too. I think menopause is more likely with my other symptoms, but it's definitely a possibility.

Ask any dermatologist - they'll tell you it's bollocks.

stucknoue · 05/07/2019 21:47

I have caffeine shampoo - cheaper online (about £2 a bottle) not sure if it's helping but it's decent at cleaning my hair

HavelockVetinari · 05/07/2019 21:47

Regaine is clinically proven though - it's expensive but it does work.

hummusavocado · 05/07/2019 21:49

Pound shop caffeine shampoo is good!

What actually works though is castor oil, rubbed in at night (it's rather greasy) and washed out in the morning. Even better if you can mix a drop or two of peppermint essential oil into it. That's proven to be more effective than a lot of the Regaine type things by science!

hummusavocado · 05/07/2019 21:50

the peppermint oil is tested by science and proven to be more effective than OTC hair regrowth ointments etc.

Lizzielocket · 05/07/2019 21:50

I’m 43 and have a thick head of long hair that I really don’t want thinning. I decided to buy a bulk load of Plantur 39 because it was on 3 for 2 in Boots last week. I’ve used it twice (I brought the products for coloured hair) and have to say it left my hair very shiny and swishy with lots of volume. I’d give it a go, it seems to work for some but not others. I have no idea if it will prevent loss or encourage new growth yet but fingers crossed.

missmouse101 · 05/07/2019 21:55

Bought (buy) not brought (bring). Reading with interest as I have thinning hair too.

LauderSyme · 05/07/2019 21:57

Ugh, I'm perimenopausal and my hair has thinned so much in the last year, there's literally half as much as there used to be. Mine's coming out all over though, not from specific spots. And it's become ridiculously dry and knotty. I hate it. I tried caffeine shampoo and it did nothing to help and my hair felt horrible. Am making notes of these recommendations!

LemonTT · 05/07/2019 22:11

HRT reversed the hair loss for me

Stillabitemo · 05/07/2019 22:14

The grow long range from Umberto Gianni in Boots is excellent and has sped my hair grow and thickened it quite a bit. The scalp treatment has also basically cured my dandruff and scalp irritation.
