GDPR issue

Would you say it was a GDPR issue if you are in a university lecture and they read out all the names of people who have not submitted a small task that they didn't know they had to do?

gokartdillydilly · 04/07/2019 15:27

No. It would be a GDPR issue if they read out all the names & bank account details/telephone numbers/email addresses/home addresses/inside leg measurement.

You can look up the rules on the ICO website. Naming a name isn't a GDPR issue.

Was your name called our OP? If so, crack on with the small task required and get over yourself!

ShartGoblin · 04/07/2019 15:29

I wouldn't say so, technically your name is personal data and it may be considered a breach if it's a course where the attendees don't already know each other's names but for it to be an actual issue there would need to be a risk to the individual.

This assessment can be used to identify if something is considered reportable: ico.org.uk/for-organisations/report-a-breach/pdb-assessment/

Nicknacky · 04/07/2019 15:29

Since GPDR came in people are desperate to make it a breach when something happens that they don’t like!

nauseous5000 · 04/07/2019 15:30

No, not in any way, shape or form. I'm sorry you were embarrassed though

Celebelly · 04/07/2019 15:30

No not in the slightest.

Lindellia · 04/07/2019 15:31

Nope. Try and stay more on top of your assignments in future.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/07/2019 15:31

No, this wouldn't be covered by GDPR. I'm sorry if it was embarrassing though!

Lauren83 · 04/07/2019 15:31

No it's not a breach of GDPR

Biancadelrioisback · 04/07/2019 15:31

For saying your name?

MyHeadIsBursting · 04/07/2019 15:32

Nope, definitely not.

JagerPlease · 04/07/2019 15:33

No. If it were, calling out a register in any form of class would be a breach

Powerbunting · 04/07/2019 15:34

Is it an issue when they read out names on a register to see who is/ is not there?

Or publish a list as to who is what role in the end of term production?

NotAgainSilly · 04/07/2019 15:35

No, not in any way shape or form.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 04/07/2019 15:35

crack on with the small task required and get over yourself!

can't get any more sensible advice than that

yourestandingonmyneck · 04/07/2019 15:37

No, it's not, don't be ridiculous

noonarna · 04/07/2019 15:40

Surely people in your class know your name anyway? Have a google at what GDPR actually is.

msmith501 · 04/07/2019 15:40

No, that's called being lazy and not paying attention to what everyone else somehow managed to do. Going forward, a better reaction would have been mortification to not have delivered an assignment, project etc. be side ultimately it is only yourself that you have let down. When you eventually leave and get employment, my advice is to achieve the objectives set in your regular view and not take issue with your boss if your get called out for not doing as asked. I'm 54 so have a real issue with entitlement and snowflakes.

user1471449295 · 04/07/2019 15:41

Are you being serious?

nsldriver · 04/07/2019 15:41

Fair enough if it's not. As for keeping on top of the task - it's one that we were told was due in the autumn term coming so obviously those of us who weren't told it had changed haven't done it.

OP posts:
nsldriver · 04/07/2019 15:42

As for not knowing - they said in the lecture our tutors had emailed us but one tutor didn't email anybody.

OP posts:
Celebelly · 04/07/2019 15:43

I can understand being annoyed if you genuinely weren't told but I don't really understand why you would seize on GDPR as the issue!

floribunda18 · 04/07/2019 15:44

I wouldn't say it was a GDPR issue, but it does seem like unfair embarrassment and poor communication if very few students knew about the task.

Nearlythere1 · 04/07/2019 15:47

I agree @nickynacky

GleefulGlitch · 04/07/2019 15:51

Is a school teacher calling out the register a breech of GDPR OP? What you described it practically the same.

I assume you want it to be a breech as you are embarrassed to have your name called out in relation to uncompleted work.

Instead email the tutors and point out that the task/deadline was never communicated therefore uncompleted work was not your fault.

gokartdillydilly · 04/07/2019 15:52

As for keeping on top of the task - it's one that we were told was due in the autumn term coming so obviously those of us who weren't told it had changed haven't done it

Then it's a communication issue, not a breach of personal data issue. Take it up with whoever didn't send you the memo, and request a reasonable extension to give you time to complete the task.

GDPR is about protecting peoples' personal data, and not for protecting students from getting called out for not completing a piece of work in a given time-frame.
