To leave a bad review!?

DH bought me a car 2-3 months back, it was £8500 and had 3000 miles worth of warranty. Thats now gone, up to now we have spent another £500-600 on the car

Discs and pads
Bottom arms
New part for the boot as it wouldn't open

DH got it serviced yesterday luckily he has lots of mechanic friends so gets work done cheap, mechanic was putting a filter on or something and another mechanic noticed the engine TURNING!!! So they stopped grabbed hold of the engine and shook it, it's a surprise the engine hasn't fallen out it is that loose!

Its cost us nearly £180 for the parts to fix this and will have to pay the mechanic to do the work🤦🏻‍♀️

There is a leak into the boot which messes with the electrics that needs sorting!

We told the people we bought it of it needed new discs and pads, they weren't interested said the warranty covers engine gearbox etc & they obviously know a dodgy mechanic as it passed the MOT with all these problems...

I need to review the garage we bought it from... what would you write and AIBU to be harsh?

I certainly would not put anything about dodgy mot unless youre prepared to prove it in court

carscars · 04/07/2019 11:24

@araiwa Well its not hard to prove in court that the disc and pads should not have passed an MOT they weren't even an advisory

Leave a truthful review.

Like most 2nd hand goods, cars are bought as seen. An MOT only states the car was roadworthy at the time of the MOT testing.

they obviously know a dodgy mechanic as it passed the MOT with all these problems... be very careful with your terminology.

How does this sound?

We bought a {names make model} of car on {such and such a date] with a three month warranty and an MOT valid for {X months}. Subsequently we had to take the car to our own mechanic and {x y z problems] were found to be wrong with the car. We remain mystified how this car passed an MOT with this level of faults. The garage offered us no assistance.

araiwa · 04/07/2019 11:35

Prove your discs and pads wouldnt have passed before you added over 3000 miles on them

carscars · 04/07/2019 11:36

@MyOpinionIsValid thats helpful thank you!

@araiwa 🙄🙄🙄 if you read the thread the discs and pads are at the top of the list, they were changed 2 weeks after purchasing the car hence why we told the garage as it was still in warranty!

OP posts:
familycourtq · 04/07/2019 11:43

I think it might be harder than you imagine.

An MOT is evidence the car met the MOT standard on that day, nothing more.

Even if you still have the worn out parts as evidence, you're going to need some really expert analysis to prove -
a)They were ever fitted to your car
b)The wear couldn't possibly have occurred since the MOT
c)They should have been an advisory

None of these things will be easy. At all.

familycourtq · 04/07/2019 11:49

If he knows so many mechanics how did you manage to buy such a shit car?

Cominground · 04/07/2019 14:49

This made me laugh!

Justaboutdone · 04/07/2019 15:16

I’m confused.

Who paid for the new discs & pads?

How old is car?

Leak into boot could be expensive!! Possible from the rear washer but if I remember right it’s can be tricky to get at, so expensive labour.

We bought a ‘Friday’ car although it was only a couple of years old at time. That was from a dealership too.
Think we managed a couple of years out of it before we punted it.

carscars · 04/07/2019 15:18

@familycourtq sorry does that mean we took them with us to buy the car? idiot

OP posts:
carscars · 04/07/2019 15:21

@Justaboutdone DH pays for the parts and work to be done by his friend at a top dealership garage he knows a lot about cars but isn't actually a mechanic...

The car is only a few years old and had 1 previous owner who traded it in against a car they had in.

Iltavilli · 04/07/2019 15:25

You’ve done 3000 miles in 2-3 months and also found time to get a fair amount of work done?
How’s the car used? I mean, what are your journeys each day?

22Giraffes · 04/07/2019 15:25

I think you're getting a bit defensive when people are just speaking the truth. If you have a lot of mechanic friends it is a bit unfortunate you didn't think to get any of them to look over the car before you bought it!

species5618 · 04/07/2019 15:44

Just trying to clear things up.
Do you mean you had 3 months warranty not 3000 miles, and if so how many miles have you done in the vehicle since purchase?
Pads (and possibly discs) would normally be consumables and not covered under warranty - unless of course you've only done a very very small mileage since vehicle purchase.

carscars · 04/07/2019 16:10

@species5618 3 months OR 3 thousands miles, we have done 3 thousand miles had the car nearly 3 months.

We changed the discs and pads after 2 weeks as DH said something about the breaking so got those checked (I don't notice these things)

He noticed a noise when going over pot holes bumps etc got that checked the bottom arms needed changing, the noise was still there slightly but now realised its the engine bouncing around!

Most of the miles we have done were going to see family in london and driving to and from the garage to fix the problems🤦🏻‍♀️

I also take DD to school which is a few miles away so soon adds up...

OP posts:
carscars · 04/07/2019 16:11

@22Giraffes They are going to take a day of work and travel over an hour away to look at a car! Not to mention the fact you cant see any of these problems anyway without getting the car on a ramp and taking parts of, so regardless whether we took a mechanic with us or not you couldn't of seen these problems without taking it into a garage.

OP posts:
carscars · 04/07/2019 16:13

@Iltavilli we don't live next door to the garage its a 16 mile round trip if you want specifics.

OP posts:
MT2017 · 04/07/2019 17:08

Actually next time do take one of his mechanic mates with you, that will stop all this bother in future Wink

haveuheard · 04/07/2019 17:12

Why didn't you get the garage to sort out the faults?

Squigglesworth · 04/07/2019 17:23

Not sure why some people are being so snippy with you, OP.

I wouldn't hesitate to leave a bad review detailing all the problems you've had and how soon they happened. What's the point of reviews if people aren't honest about their experience with the good/service/business?

carscars · 04/07/2019 17:39

@Squigglesworth because people feel empowered when they give other humans shit over the internet !

Thanks I think I will just be honest like someone previously said and see if they email me over it 😊

OP posts:
HiJuice · 04/07/2019 19:54

It's normal for warranty on second hand cars to cover engine only.
MOT s can be very variable and a noise from the brakes wouldn't necessarily mean MOT failure. MOT is a basic safety standard only. This is why cars need to be serviced as well as MOT 'd.
Second hand cars are very much buyer beware - if spending thousands it's worth getting (paying for) a mechanic to have a look.
The garage probably haven't looked at the car - they have just done the minimum (MOT) and sold it on so may not even have known about the faults.
It's up to the buyer to make sure the car meets their requirements (beyond being safe/legal).
I've been caught out like this too but you soon learn - next time you buy a second hand car you will be much more savvy!

carscars · 04/07/2019 20:02

@HiJuice yeah I think next time we will take the wheels of and check discs pads bottom arms etc and make sure to shake the engine and go through a car wash to check for any leaks 🙌🏻
