DH bought me a car 2-3 months back, it was £8500 and had 3000 miles worth of warranty. Thats now gone, up to now we have spent another £500-600 on the car

Discs and pads
Bottom arms
New part for the boot as it wouldn't open

DH got it serviced yesterday luckily he has lots of mechanic friends so gets work done cheap, mechanic was putting a filter on or something and another mechanic noticed the engine TURNING!!! So they stopped grabbed hold of the engine and shook it, it's a surprise the engine hasn't fallen out it is that loose!

Its cost us nearly £180 for the parts to fix this and will have to pay the mechanic to do the work🤦🏻‍♀️

There is a leak into the boot which messes with the electrics that needs sorting!

We told the people we bought it of it needed new discs and pads, they weren't interested said the warranty covers engine gearbox etc & they obviously know a dodgy mechanic as it passed the MOT with all these problems...

I need to review the garage we bought it from... what would you write and AIBU to be harsh?

It's up to the buyer to make sure the car meets their requirements (beyond being safe/legal).

That’s not quite true.

If you buy from a dealer/garage, normal consumer law still applies, but any reasonable wear and tear would not be covered.
If the faults would not be classed as normal wear and tear on a car of the age and mileage, you’d have a claim under consumer legislation (separate to warranty).

he knows a lot about cars but isn't actually a mechanic...
And yet he managed to buy a car with faulty “breaking” [sic] and an engine ready to fall out, despite being so great at cars. But of course it’s the fault of the garage for not selling you a brand new car for £8500, and the MOT must’ve even dodgy and and and if anyone points out you might be a tiny bit U about it they are an idiot.

Yeah, ok. Maybe AIBU isn’t actually for you.

We changed the discs and pads after 2 weeks as DH said something about the breaking so got those checked (I don't notice these things)

Did you not contact the garage then?

Did the car come with a 12 month mot?

But if the car wasn't safe when you bought it (and you could argue that not being able to pass not is an example of that) then you're covered by the consumer rights act. You're also covered by the road traffic act which makes it an offence to sell a car that isn't roadworthy (unless the buyer knows and accepts it isn't roadworthy).

So you probably should have just taken it back / make the garage you bought it from do the repairs. Not putting this on to be smug, but any warranty you get with your car is in addition to these rights. Don't let a dealer fob you off with being outside the warranty period. We know people who had their cam chain changed for free after ¹1months of owning the car because they could show that it was sold to them in a bad way.
