Mistake on uni transcript. Aibu?

QuestionableMouse · 04/07/2019 10:54

I'm not happy. Our grade transcript was released today and I've just seen I've been given 58 for both assignments in one module. I have had no feedback on this module and have been waiting 7+ weeks. I've contacted the lecturer repeatedly and had no reply from him (as far as I was aware)

I've just been poking around on Canvas on my laptop and seen that feedback has been uploaded. It's one file attached to the grades bit whice has feedback for both assignments and says I should have 68.

Wibu to contact the course leader and complain? I've no idea how long the feedback has been there or even if it's been counted towards my official grade. 58 will bring my overall grades down quite significantly (everything else is 70+) but I'm not even sure if it can be corrected now?

Just email them and explain there's been a mistake - they'll get it sorted.

Readytogogogo · 04/07/2019 10:57

Of course you need to get it corrected - why wouldn't you??

QuestionableMouse · 04/07/2019 11:01

I said I didn't know if it could be corrected, not that I wasn't going to get it done.

Of course I want it fixing, it's ruining my average!

ElizaPancakes · 04/07/2019 11:09

I don’t even know why you’re asking this. Of course you ask for a for a correction!

bibliomania · 04/07/2019 11:10

Don't approach it as a complaint. Firstly, check with the department if it's a simple clerical error, which can be corrected very quickly. If they don't, look on the university website for information about the appeal procedure.

It might turn out that it's not an error, but instead the original mark was adjusted through the assessment process (could be due to the input from a second marker or external examiner). They should be able to explain to you if that is the case. If the lower mark is confirmed as correct, you won't be able to get it changed.

Birdrib · 04/07/2019 11:10

Wibu to contact the course leader and complain?

Why?

ChicCroissant · 04/07/2019 11:12

There is no need to make it a complaint at this stage. Just query it. Is there any reason why an assignment might be limited to those marks, did you have an extension for it or was it resubmitted at any point?

VivienneHolt · 04/07/2019 11:14

I genuinely don’t know what your aibu. You’re entitled to ask for it to be corrected, you’re going to do that - what’s the issue?

Monsterinmypocket · 04/07/2019 11:15

Definitely get it corrected. If you just miss out on a 1st at the end of your degree (presume you are in Y2 or 3?) then you will be gutted. Get it sorted now.

PCohle · 04/07/2019 11:15

I'd politely query the discrepancy rather than complain.

Why are you sure the higher mark is the correct one?

TheFirstOHN · 04/07/2019 11:16

Just email them to query the discrepancy.

captainpantbeard · 04/07/2019 11:17

It can definitely be corrected. Contact your administrator or course leader and ask them to look into it. Probably just human error. Not great but these things happen occasionally.

captainpantbeard · 04/07/2019 11:18

*I mean it can be corrected if the 68 is the actual mark

CellularBlanket · 04/07/2019 11:20

I said I didn't know if it could be corrected, not that I wasn't going to get it done.

Actually you said: Wibu to contact the course leader and complain?
Your OP was not clear especially as the systems and terminology at your university are not going to be the same as those at others.
It is obvious that if there is a mistake you need to get it sorted out.

QuestionableMouse · 04/07/2019 11:25

Hi.

Thanks. Of course I'm going to get it corrected. At this point I don't know which grade is correct but honestly 58 is so low for me... It would be the result of a huge mistake in both assignments and I just can't believe that would be the case. I'm at the end of year 2 and never had a grade below the mid 60s.

It was submitted 2 weeks before the deadline. No resubmit or anything like that. I handed it in and didn't hear anything back until the transcript email the morning.

@CellularBlanket well honestly, wouldn't you complain? I've been wanting 7 weeks with no feedback and now because of it my transcript grades are wrong. It is annoying and I'm frustrated.

OP posts:
Kittywampus · 04/07/2019 11:29

Just email them and query it

  • it is probably a typo and easily corrected.

The other possibility is that one assignment has been marked down, for example if you submitted it late. If that is the case then the staff will be able to explain this to you.

RubberTreePlant · 04/07/2019 11:31

Nobody's going to advise you to sit on your hands and accept itOP Smile

QuestionableMouse · 04/07/2019 11:38

@Kittywampus

Nothing was submitted late. One was an in class assessment that was handed in on the day and the other was in 2ish weeks early.

I just want to know if it can be corrected?

OP posts:
Kittywampus · 04/07/2019 11:41

No one here can advise you whether the grade can be corrected, because it depends why it was changed.

If, as seems likely, it is just a typographical error then they will be able to correct it for you.

Isthisafreename · 04/07/2019 11:46

You say you were waiting 7+ weeks for feedback but you also say that you don't know how long the feedback was there. Is it possible that you just missed seeing the feedback when it was originally posted?

Anyway, it's two separate issues. I assume if you had seen the feedback earlier you wouldn't have queried it as you would have been happy with the mark.

There are two possibilities here. Assuming the mark given in the feedback was a provisional one (all marks where I work are provisional until approved by the exam board), your mark may have been reduced. This sometimes happens if the tutor's marking is out of line with institutional guidelines. Alternatively, there wad a system or manual error.

The only way to find out which is to query it. I would start with the tutor. Ask why the mark on your transcript is different to the mark in the feedback. If it is an error, they should be able to either get it corrected or point you to whoever you need to contact. If your mark was adjusted, they will be able to tell you why.

QuestionableMouse · 04/07/2019 11:58

Sorry for any confusion.

Until today when I saw the transcript, as far I was aware no feedback had been given. It's not showing at all on the Canvas app. No grade has been uploaded.

After I saw the transcript I had a look on the canvas Web version. There is a single file on there with feedback for the in class assessment and the assignment I handed in on the 11th May. This is not dated and I have had no notification about it.

The grades listed in there are both 68, while on my transcript the module is down for 58 for both assignments.

I've contacted the lecturer for this module multiple times and haven't heard anything back from him at all.

I feel like making a complaint to the course leader due to the poor communication that is taking place. It seems like the grades file has been uploaded like a module resource rather than going through the Canvas grades system (which I admittedly don't know that much about). The rest of the modules on Canvas have grades on the 'cover' but this one doesn't.

OP posts:
Birdrib · 04/07/2019 12:02

I’d forward all of your emails to the course leader and ask for clarification on the discrepancy.

That way it’s bringing the tutor’s lack of communication to the leader’s attention too.

Booboostwo · 04/07/2019 12:11

Just call someone. If you can’t find the lecturer, try the course leader, if not the departmental secretary should pick up during office hours and can chase this up for you. It’s probably a typo, it happens.

FatherBuzzCagney · 04/07/2019 12:13

Hi OP, by this point in the year your grades will have been ratified by your university exam boards so it needs to be fixed centrally. There's nothing your lecturer could do now anyway, even if they wanted to. Contact the academic registry/ central exams office (whatever it's called where you are) for your university and the exam board chair for your department. This is a very serious matter for them, as well as for you, and they will get it fixed asap.

The department exam board chair will want to make sure that all the grades for that module are right: if one is wrong others may well be too, so you will be doing them a favour. They will also almost certainly want to get the head of department to deal with the lecturer in question - lecturers like this are an almighty pain in the arse for exam board chairs and it's very unlikely that you are the only person who has been messed about by them.

I'm an ex-undergrad exam board chair of a university department so can give you general (non-university specific) advice about process if you want to PM me.
