Was this woman unreasonable - dog weeing in public

This afternoon I was out walking my dog. He stopped to pee against a lamp post, by the side of the pavement (which I thought was a sensible place for him to pee). As I stopped a woman walked past me and gave me an absolute death stare. I asked her politely what I had done wrong and she gave me a lecture about how antisocial it was to let him pee there and suggested I take him into the road to pee "where there aren't people and children walking". I was a bit surprised as I have seen people allowing there dogs to pee in this place before but as this is my first dog (and he's a puppy), I wondered if there is something that I have missed along the way.

She's being ridiculous. Literally every dog on planet earth pees up against lampposts when they pass one! If you're unreasonable then so is every single dog owner I've ever met !

Finfintytint · 03/07/2019 17:46

Ha ha. Dogs have peed up lampposts since lampposts were invented.
She’s barking. No pun intended.

Fakenametodayhey · 03/07/2019 17:46

She was off her tits. Digs piss up everything. Mine has at least 10 per walk. What an odd woman.

Orangeballon · 03/07/2019 17:48

Not unknown for a dog to be electrocuted whilst peeing against a lamppost.😂

Notnownotneverever · 03/07/2019 17:50

Honestly I prefer it when dogs don’t pee so that it runs across the pavement iyswim. Just coz then people walk in it.
That said I wouldn’t say anything to anyone as it’s not an issue.

ScreamingValenta · 03/07/2019 17:50

Dogs having been peeing against lamp posts since lamp posts were invented. The pee will evaporate harmlessly, unlike poo. If you walk on a pavement, you will be walking on all sorts of things - sensible people wipe their feet when they go into the house.

timeforakinderworld · 03/07/2019 17:52

I have seen some owners take water bottles to wash down pee on pavements which I think is very considerate. I live in a hot country and the streets stink of dog pee in this hot weather!

BlueMerchant · 03/07/2019 17:54

Could you not carry a puppy potty?Grin

newmomof1 · 03/07/2019 17:58

She'd be annoyed if she was driving and your dog was in her way having a wee 🤦🏼‍♀️
Don't worry, she's being ridiculous!

GloGirl · 03/07/2019 17:59

It's not an uncommon opinion

I had a puppy book that advised me to teach the dog to pee in the gutter on the street

Another book that said I should teach the dog to toilet before his walk

And a man once gave me a 15 minute rant about how there was POO ON THE PAVEMENT with pointing hands at the offending spot. Apparently it was a wet poo and the person was unable to clean it up but DOGS SHOULD BE TRAINED NOT TO POO ON THE PATH

I think a lot of people have various ideas on what dogs should be trained to do if they don't have any. You can try and encorage good social habits but when they're a puppy they are going to do what they like. Normally in the most awkward of places with the worst of people.

ScruffbagsRUs · 03/07/2019 18:00

I would have asked her if she would like me to train my dog to pee over her instead.

You should train your dog to cock their leg and make it look as if the dog is about to pee on the person. I'm damn sure you'll have them moving away in an instant. Maybe a one-word command and job done. You'll not have people lecturing you in a hurry (they'll be too busy trying to move away from pretend-peeing dog).

Lifeover · 03/07/2019 18:03

So you’re supposed to stand with your dog in the middle of the road waiting for it to have a pee? She’s completely off her head. Mind you I’ve had someone have a go about me not picking up after my dog when she had a pee. Apparently all dogs (both make and female cock their leg to wee and when they crouch they’re having a poo. Quite frankly you do wonder how some people get themselves dressed!

Opossooom · 03/07/2019 18:08

My dogs had a wee in the middle of a town centre before where people walk 🤭 I found it disgusting but it can’t be helped unless we don’t walk there.. which we don’t often!

CallMeRachel · 03/07/2019 18:08

She's bonkers.

A scary woman I know has similar opinion on dogs peeing on grass near play parks!

Do these people not realise birds shit everywhere, cats pee everywhere and rodents everywhere but yet it's dogs that are the issue.

dadshere · 03/07/2019 18:12

Wellllll there are two sides to this. Dog pee rusts lamposts really quickly, meaning that they fail more often and have to be replaced, at a cost to the taxpayer. So yes, in that sense you are BU.

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/07/2019 18:12

I do carry a bottle of water with me both for drinking and sloshing on accidents.

Generally speaking, don't let your dog pee on peoples houses, gates, cars, but street furniture is actually designed knowing dogs will pee on it and checking out the pee-mail for dogs is a pretty important part of their day (the mental stimulation of a walk is far more important than the physical exercise!)

So YANBU, and I;ll stop my dog peeing on lamposts, bus shelters and postboxes, when someone finds a way to stop all the wildlife doing same... its just pee!

Windyone · 03/07/2019 18:13

I’ve got a tiny garden at the front of my flat with gate posts. I hate it when dogs pee on my gateposts!

Benjispruce · 03/07/2019 18:15

Someone in my street lets his dog wee up my front wall. I object to that as it's my property but a lamp post I wouldn't worry.

SerenDippitty · 03/07/2019 18:16

My dog had a pee on the pavement against the outside of a front garden wall. The owner just happened to come back at that moment and had a right go at me.

Benjispruce · 03/07/2019 18:16

The other thing is that it is very hard to stop a dog that wants a wee, doing a wee. You have to drag them, claws scraping, away.

Inmyvestandpants · 03/07/2019 18:17

I had this once, only it was my 4yo DS going for a walk early Sunday morning, and he was about to pee his pants, so I said, "Quick, do it against that tree" (NB a tree on the pavement, not somebody's garden). Cue nosey woman coming out of her house to berate me for letting my son urinate against a tree and suggesting he should have done it in the gutter. I was too shocked at the time to say that I would rather he was against a tree than exposing himself to the entire street. I did offer to come back later with a bucket of soapy water to wash it away (I was being ironic, but she thought it a genuine offer) and of course she said that wouldn't be necessary, because deep down she knew she was being totally unreasonable.

brotown · 03/07/2019 18:18

Somehow a tree is better than a lamppost or a wall. I would discourage my dog from peeing on a lamppost, pavement or street.

MelbaToast · 03/07/2019 18:18

Thanks for the responses. They made me 😂. I think I might train him to pee on people like her. It would be good fun.

It's another reason to take your shoes off when you get home!

Finfintytint · 03/07/2019 18:20

Any facts to back up dog pee corroding lampposts at a cost to the tax payer?
Apologies in advance if this is actually true.
