To really hate the pressure to have/want a holiday...

Two people so far today have looked at me like I'm an alien when I've said that I'm not going on holiday this year. I haven't been on holiday for a few years and this is a recurring theme.

One said "Oh no, you have to have a holiday". The other said "Oh okay" as if I just told her I'd developed a fetish for eating toe jam.

I really hate the pressure to have/want a holiday.
Some people can't afford a holiday so might say they don't want one because they don't want to tell people they're skint.

I can afford a holiday, I just don't want one. Last year I started saying "We might get a late deal later in the summer" just to avoid having to explain why I wasn't having a holiday.

I realise it's a massive non-issue but it pisses me off.

I pressed YANBU because obviously it’s your choice and I respect that.

But actually I can’t understand anyone who doesn’t want to go away somewhere different that has more of the things I like; sunshine, heat wine, sea, beaches, restaurants, people I don’t see all the time.I mean you can do same old same old anytime.

BeardedMum · 03/07/2019 17:49

I live for my holidays and have 3 or 4 a year.
I cannot imagine spending my holidays at home as I want a break from routine and a bit of adventure. I don’t care what other people do. I also think people are just making small talk.

Kashali · 03/07/2019 17:50

Don't you want to get away from it all?
Away from what?
well, the grind of work and routine.
I don't have grind, work and routine.
You must want to get away?
Away from what?

and so it continues.

Gth1234 · 03/07/2019 17:53

I see the point. You live in a nice place, and then you have ot pay a load to go and stay somewhere not as nice.

I wouldn't want to spend shedloads on a holiday.

dreichuplands · 03/07/2019 17:55

I live somewhere perfectly nice, a holiday destination for many but I still love going on holiday whenever I can.
I think talking about it is just polite small talk.
But staycations are perfectly valid if you like them.

Benjispruce · 03/07/2019 17:59

I know someone who used to say she was going to "Ourgate" , meaning staying home. I'd never heard it before and found it funny.

DirtyDennis · 03/07/2019 18:00

Yes I think that's it. I don't particularly want to get away from my routine/everyday life - I love my life Grin

I obviously enjoy not being at work but beyond that I don't feel I have anything to escape from. If anything, I like that a "holiday" (time off work) allows me to better connect with my routine/home/area rather than get away from it.

@Benjispruce

We used to go to "Ourgate"
Or "Rome" sometimes. - Roam around your neighbourhood.

DirtyDennis · 03/07/2019 18:03

I agree people are just making small talk. I have no issue with that. What I hate is the "Oh no, you have to have a holiday" or looking at your like you're an alien.

I don't get why, if you're making small talk, you can't just say "Oh that sounds nice" even if you think it sounds shit Grin

There are too many amazing and interesting places in the world to chose from, I wouldn't even know where to start.

If you feel you found your own little paradise, that's a good thing surely. If most people would follow your lead, my own holidays would be cheaper and much more pleasant Grin

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 03/07/2019 18:07

you can't just say "Oh that sounds nice" even if you think it sounds shit

agree

it's exactly the same as the fake concern about people staying-at-home, being a SAH parent, in early retirement or whatever the reason. YOU might be bored out of your mind without being told what to do, some of us aren't.
I would use my time to go on holiday but still Grin

DirtyDennis · 03/07/2019 18:16

@that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 Ha! Yep, me and DP are planning early retirement and are constantly getting told (by FIL) how bored we'll be.

YANBU
DH's family are big on holidays. To them a holiday destination must be,
accessed by a plane (with the exemption of a cruise),
hot,
all inclusive.
Our UK holidays have been scoffed at and even our private villas in Greece, Ibiza and Spain have been deemed not a 'proper holiday'.

DH and I have had a pretty big windfall (not millions!) and his family simply cannot believe that we haven't booked a super luxury destination holiday somewhere like The Maldives, Caribbean or a cruise.
I think they've thought all these years we were just saving face saying we didn't fancy any of these places and we just couldn't afford it. They keep sending us links of places they think we'd like Hmm

Jsmith99 · 03/07/2019 18:22

I love my holidays, which are always a big priority in my life. A significant chunk of my disposable income is spent on travel instead of, for example, clothes shopping, and I consider myself fortunate to have been able to visit some wonderful places. I love a city break, an activity based holiday or a road trip but beaches, cruises, AI resorts and theme parks are not my thing.

Other people have different priorities to me. I can’t imagine anything more boring than lying round a concrete swimming pool for a fortnight, but other people seem to enjoy it so good luck to them. Ditto, staying at home. Sounds dull to me, but it’s not my holiday and it’s not my life so YANBU.

Yugi · 03/07/2019 18:43

Pull the environment card on them.

'I just can't bear to destroy the environment any further. Haven't you heard David Attenborough? Are you going away?'

Then pull a sad face every time you look at them.

Hopefully that will shut them up 😂

Writing this from my holiday in case anyone thinks I am genuinely being horrible about holidays
