To force DS3 to wear sandals?

Lighthearted (I think) he won't wear sandals, and it makes me so sad to see him wearing socks with trainers in this heat. He's going on a trip with the nursery today, and I was hoping I could get him to wear the sandals, also refusing to wear any of the new T-shirt's, shorts and summer hats I've bought for him. Argh 😤

Good for him. He won’t get sunburned feet of blisters from straps.

Schools are full of children wearing socks and school shoes/trainers in this weather. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Wattonearth · 03/07/2019 09:11

Children in my DD’s nursery are not allowed to wear sandals with open toes. So she is in trainers and socks always. I wouldn’t stress about it at all.

adaline · 03/07/2019 09:13

Sandals aren't really a good idea for nursery - too much risk of injured toes imo. Things being dropped on feet or kids tripping over and hurting their toes because they're not protected.

HoppingPavlova · 03/07/2019 09:15

???? My kids have always worn trainers when required. It gets very hot here (over 40 degC in summer on occasion) and kids wear proper footwear when required such as fully closed in leather school shoes, trainers etc. Sure, at home kick off the shoes and go barefoot and wear thongs to the shops but no real issue wearing full shoes in heat.

HoppingPavlova · 03/07/2019 09:16

Should add, for the love of god, don’t do the socks with sandals thing. Commit one way or the other.

mistermagpie · 03/07/2019 09:18

My nursery doesn't allow sandals due to risk of injury. All the kids there have survived so far with socks and trainers!

thewildrose · 03/07/2019 09:19

My kids don't wear sandals in the warm weather. Crocs, water shoes, etc, yes, but all with toe protection. They wear sturdy canvas slip on shoes with rubber soles for school at this time of year.

Lilicat1013 · 03/07/2019 09:20

Does he have sensory issues with the feelings of clothes? It might be the case you need to take him to choose which shorts, t-shirt etc feel ok for him.
Cutting the labels out and washing new clothes till they are soft can also help.
With regard to the socks vs sandals thing you might just have to trust he is doing what is more comfortable for him even if it isn't what you would find comfortable.

WellTidy · 03/07/2019 09:20

DS2 won't under any circumstances wear sandals. he is 7 now, and I remember vividly him being 2yo and me utting sandals on him when he was standing on the grass outside, thinking that his only option would be to take some steps now that he was wearing them. he stood rooted to the spot for ages and ages.

Since then, we've just bought summer canvas shoes that go in the washing machine when they're dirty of smelly. Clarks have these every year.

goodgirlinchachaheels · 03/07/2019 09:46

Don't. My mum did that and I still hate sandals with a passion.

AverageMummy · 03/07/2019 09:51

My daughter wore open toed sandals tripped on a step & smashed her face in - still has a lump 2 years on so my love of sandals is very much diminished !

Sparklingbrook · 03/07/2019 09:56

Trainers are very sensible for a trip. Way better than sandals.

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 03/07/2019 10:05

I can see your line of thought with his feet getting really warm and that it's nicer to wear sandals when it's hot but perhaps his feet just feel more comfortable in proper shoes.
I refuse to put DS in sandals for anything other than going to the splash park as he's incredibly active and would almost certainly rip off a toenail from climbing something or jumping around, especially at nursery.
As a pp said, I'd just focus on leaving him in bare feet when at home as much as possible to let his feet breathe.

TapasForTwo · 03/07/2019 10:14

"In this heat" ??

Just how hot is it where you are? We are struggling to get to 20 degrees here.

CherryPavlova · 03/07/2019 10:26

Agree it’s not exactly midday in the UAE, is it? We grew up barefooted through the summer holidays and survived with ten toes each.

My husband has just gone off by train wearing in suit, tie, collar buttoned. He’ll remain that way until he gets on train home tonight. Its not exactly so hot your child is at any sort of risk.

EggysMom · 03/07/2019 10:30

Our autistic son has always hated sandals, I persevered until he was about 6 and then gave up, he lives in socks in our garden and trainers if we go out. It's funny watching him when he gets a new pair of trainers, he dislikes them and tiptoes around, trying to take them off; but distract him for half an hour, and suddenly they become comfortable and acceptable Smile

raspberryk · 03/07/2019 10:34

I won't wear sandals ever either, my feet don't get too hot in canvas shoes and socks.

51Pegasusb · 03/07/2019 10:38

My 2yr old, doesn't like his closed toe sandals. I don't mind he's in socks and trainers at nursery seems happy enough. Nursery are fine with it too, there are others who don;t wear sandals. At home we just go barefoot in the heat.

Definitely choose your battles with a 2yr old, this isn't one of them for us. The t-shirt thing I'm lucky he's not clothes fussy ( yet!)

NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten · 03/07/2019 10:45

I remember being forced to wear sandals as a child, I once stubbed my toe on the edge of a rusty old pipe when I was on holiday and cut my toe quite deeply.

Seeing young children in sandals makes me so nervous now.

For nursery especially I'd stick with light canvas trainers and socks, keep those tiny toes safe from bangs and burns.

Also I've just remembered DH never wears sandals, he just doesn't like having his feet out.

swizzells2003 · 03/07/2019 10:48

My 4 year old wore jeans, trainers and socks the whole time that we were in Florida on holiday - not worth the battle in my opinion. He doesn't like shorts and sandals......

Lucked · 03/07/2019 10:50

DS was /is the same. Many holidays in hot countries having to put socks and shoes on to go to the beach or pool, or just carrying him.

He now gets on with crocs ( initially worn with socks) which are great for holidays but still wears trainers if there is running around to be done.

plobsalt · 03/07/2019 10:56

All kids here wear sandals in the summer. They still have their toes protected. Confused

Crocs are banned in many schools now as they can cause some real damage if a kid's running in them and slips in them, they're so unsupportive. Beach shoes only here.

I bought him these sandals, so his toes will be out. I'll try canvas thanks.
