To remove bars off cot bed of a 22 month old toilet training.

Tigger001 · 03/07/2019 07:14

So my DS toilet training at 21 month old. He has done brilliantly, no accidents really and he is now (23months )mostly dry through naps and nights (although I still pop a nappy on)
He has climbed out of his cot during a nap and in the morning a few times

He had also pulled down his trouser and nappy twice now in his cot bed and weed in the corner, he has then started crying which has made me wake and go in and see the mess.
Should I remove the bars so he can wee in the potty himself?
If I do remove it should I remove his nappy now for naps and sleep ?
And any other advice very welcome
Sorry for this being in AIBU but this seems to be the only place with any real traffic

I’d remove the bars because he can climb out and that isn’t safe!

As soon as they can climb they are at risk of falling so he’s take them off. If he can’t climb it just put a stair gate across his bedroom door instead and a potty in the room.

If he CAN climb star gates then you are going to need to just remove it all and spend some time showing him how to go down stairs safely on his bottom. So he doesn’t hurt himself wandering about.

The bars should be removed if he is climbing out, whether it's due to potty training or not. I would 100% remove them. You could get a bed guard if you are worried about him falling out in the night

loveskaka · 03/07/2019 07:19

I can offer advice on toilet training as my wee one is only 18months and I have just started. But he has had his cot dwn to a bed since he was 14months. He haters sleeping in a enclosed cot. He only gets up once to come in to us in the morning. Anyway, I think it would be a good idea to put him in a bed now x

loveskaka · 03/07/2019 07:20

I cant*

BeanBag7 · 03/07/2019 07:21

Yes you should remove the bars if he can climb out.
He can take his nappy off so if you're not ready for pants overnight just put the potty in his room so he can go in the morning.

MyNewBearTotoro · 03/07/2019 07:22

I would remove the bars and put a potty nearby in his room. If he’s then consistently able to sleep through without weeing or to get up and use the potty then it makes sense that removing his nappy is the next step.

Bourbonbiccy · 03/07/2019 07:26

Yes I would definitely remove the sides if he is climbing out, I think if he then starts to use his potty through the night, then remove his nappy.

SoyDora · 03/07/2019 07:29

Plenty of reasons to remove them and no reasons not to really.
Both mine had the bars removed at 18 months as they could climb out, and both toilet trained before 2 so needed to be able to get out.

I've had my 24 month old in a double bed since she was 6 months old. partly because I breastfeed and still do to get her to sleep she has alot of dry nights even tho she is still in a Nappy for night time.
I've heard people saying about limiting drinks later on so they don't need to wee in the night u could try that too.
I would personally get the mattress out the cot and let him sleep on it see how he gets on hopefully he will happily go to the potty if he needs and go back to sleep afterwards. Good luck

MammaMia19 · 03/07/2019 12:49

I’d remove the bars and use pull ups for naps/bedtime until they was dry for a while. Leave the potty in sight

ChelseaBrambles · 03/07/2019 12:53

I don't think a 2 years old really need to be in a cot. It only means you can't use grobags anymore, but they are more than old enough to have a duvet at that age.

Tigger001 · 03/07/2019 16:23

Yeah that's great thanks everyone. He is in pull-up of a night already (sorry, I said nappy as I class them the same, sorry )

I thought it was the right thing, just wanted to see the general consensus. He climbs onto his changing station as it had 3 pine shelves and into the window ledge, fingers crossed he will be ok, as I don't fancy having to move the changing station out, but will move anything else he can use as a step to the window . Fingers crossed off we go tonight

YY, what chelsea said. I think it's the fashion to have toddlers in cots for a long time, and I know in theory it means you have them caged when you want them caged, but it's a bit OTT really.

Thesearmsofmine · 03/07/2019 16:59

If he can climb up onto the window from the changing unit then it needs taking out.

Mummoomoocow · 03/07/2019 16:59

Sorry to hijack your thread OP but seeing the advice here I wanted to question something - my toddler rolls around an awful lot during the night, doesn’t he need the bars on the cot to stop him falling out the bed?

Pinkmalinky · 03/07/2019 17:02

I removed them as soon as they could climb out themselves. I bought inflatable barrier things, no idea if they still sell them. Stopped them falling out though.

Pinkmalinky · 03/07/2019 17:03

Hippychick dream tubes, just Googled. It was a few years ago now but they still sell them, I really liked them.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 03/07/2019 17:04

just get a barrier, they even sell them in Ikea

SarahAndQuack · 03/07/2019 17:04

@Mummoomoocow, it surprised me how much that's not a problem! DD was in her own bed from just after 1, and she occasionally rolled out and carried on sleeping when she was tiny! Grin We did put a soft mat there, but TBH I think it was more for our peace of mind than for her. Now she is bigger I sometimes go up and tuck her legs back in, but again, I don't think it's actually an issue for her.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 03/07/2019 17:05

@Mummoomoocow get a bed rail :)

Iggly · 03/07/2019 17:05

Why does he need a changing station? Definitely get rid! Or dismantle or fix to the wall at the very least.

He sounds ready for a bed. We moved ds to a bed at about 18 monthsb

HelloDearHusband · 03/07/2019 17:07

We took the sides off our cot when DD was 12 months...she was part monkey and could climb over the side!!! A rolled up sheet/cellular blanket or a pool noodle under the sheet stopped her rolling out.she never fell out.

If he climbs up the changing station it needs taking out.

Babdoc · 03/07/2019 17:13

Cost can be quite risky at that age, as they have further to fall if they climb up the sides. I put DD on a bed mattress on the floor at 15 months (needed the cot for next baby!), and she was fine.

Mummoomoocow · 03/07/2019 17:20

Thanks!

mumwon · 03/07/2019 17:33

re window sill - I had a climber - so we moved dc out of cot to bed & used cot bed base as barrier across window - dh screwed it across window frame(as long as it cant be used as ladder ie horizontal bars) sounds a bit extreme but it meant we didn't have to worry & as you said - move his changing table from beside the window & use stair gate on his door (unless he can climb as per pp states)
