To have screamed at Chihuahua man?

Took my dog for walk in country park. It’s a small foresty type area with tall tread, large rocks, a little lake and pathways. It’s very popular with dog walkers so there are always tons of dogs there.

Anyway, this absolutely bell end was there “hiking” with a chihuahua. I mean, he had the full kit on as if he was walking the Himalayas. Massive back pack, hiking boots, walking stick etc ... it isn’t that kind of park!! It has a bleeding main road running alongside it ffs. Anyway his rat dog thing was off lead and he had it “hiking” in the trees and up the rocks etc. When it saw us it ran over, got in my dogs face and then randomly snarled and snapped at my dogs nose. This bloke started huffing and puffing shouting “leave it!” To his dog. Eventually it ran off to follow him and he disappeared into the trees. Further along we saw him again arguining with an old man with a border collie. Apparently collie wasn’t on lead and had chased chihuahua. Old man adamant that this isn’t what happened and in fact, the rat dog ran up to his and started yapping in its face so his dog reacted. Again, hiking man disappeared into the trees.
We bumped into him a final time 20 minutes later where he was having a blazing row with a woman as her little girl had tried to stroke chihuahua when it ran up to her. Dog snapped at girl’s hand and then all hell broke lose. He’d been irritating me the entire time I was there and as I walked past I lost it and screamed at him that this is the 3rd time is seen him arguing with someone all because his dog wasn’t on a lead. He went mental and said people like me shouldn’t be allowed dogs with squashed faces. I shouted back “not everyone wants to pretend to hike in a bleeding country park and if I was going to pretend to be a hiker with a dog, I’d buy a dog and not a squirrel. The woman with the kid shouted at him “oh so you’ve been bothering other people today too then?” And so I told her about border collie man.

DH thinks I should have stayed out of it but he needed telling surely?! 3 adults upset by him and a little girl bitten all because he wants to play action man. I’m fuming.

I would have guessed he was training for a trek of some kind if he had all the gear on...

The dog sounds like a little shit but you seem to have taken a dislike of him based on how he appeared which seems rather unfair

bananaontoast1 · 02/07/2019 17:24

This is why I have cats.

Also, could you please post a photo of your dog? I love boxer dogs :D

cstaff · 02/07/2019 17:24

I'm with you OP. Those small barky little feckers should be kept on a leash. They would terrify me more than most large dogs. And three times in I presume less than an hour - and they were only the times that you saw. Who knows how many other unfortunates he tried to have a go at.

Soubriquet · 02/07/2019 17:27

Ironically chihuahuas are a short nosed breed. Both boxers and chihauhaus are classed are brachycephalic breeds and prone to BAS...

Yes and no

You get deer head chihuahuas now who have a longer nose. Apple heads are the one with the squashed nose and more prone to BAS

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 02/07/2019 17:28

@Chichef spot on!

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 02/07/2019 17:29

Sounds hilarious. I LOVE people who hike in inappropriate areas. It's one of my very favourite things. Especially the ones with the walking sticks.

Poppkitty90 · 02/07/2019 17:31

Vile little creatures. ‘Rat dog’ was accurate

PositiveVibez · 02/07/2019 17:31

He wbu for not having his aggressive dog on a lead. It is entirely his fault the dog is not trained properly.

Ywbu for screaming at him, being mean about his dog and for skitting his clothes. Why did what he was wearing, upset you sooooooo much?

What were you wearing BTW? - just so we can take the piss.

Rebssss · 02/07/2019 17:34

No need to shout. You do sound a bit of a harpy.

KurriKurri · 02/07/2019 17:39

Well he does sound like a complete tool with an out of control dog, but your comments on the breed are a bit superfluous. well trained dogs don't snap.
My neice has aperfectly behaved chihuahua - she never snaps, she doesn;t have a squashed face andis a nicelittle dog.
On the other hand I have in the past been snarled at by a border collie, knocked flying and had my glasses broken by a boxer and my dog has been attacked and bitten in the neck by a labrador. So it isn;t just little dogs, and little dogs can be excellent companions for people who have smaller homes, or are perhaps not monile enough to cope with walking a large breed.
Boxers can be lovely dogs and I'm sure your is, but I have come across some very beadly behaved ones and because they are big they do more damage, mainly by jumping on people.

It's a shame you can;t call out a man behaving stupidly without abusing the breed of his dog - that abuse just makes you looks like someone with a gripe agianst small breeds so he was less likely to actually listen to your very valid argument that he should keep his dog under control and write you off as a small dog hater.

Soubriquet · 02/07/2019 17:39

I could use one of them for madam actually rebsss Grin

bodgeitandscarper · 02/07/2019 17:40

He could still have been walking ling distances op, perhaps the backpack was to contain the Chihuahua. I have three large dogs myself, my mother has two Chihuahuas and a chi x japanese chin. They are extremely clever dogs, and while they aren't my bag, I think its unpleasant to be calling any dog names. Personally I've had more unruly boxers bouncing round my lot than I've been bothered with chihuahuas, I havent resorted to calling them all names though.

Flubberyseal · 02/07/2019 17:40

Long distance hiking with a chihuahua?

Yes, my chihuahua can easily go on six mile runs with me and has walked much further. He’s a great running companion but can be a little grumpy sod with people he doesn’t know/other dogs. Best kept on a lead in general.

BentNeckLady · 02/07/2019 17:42

Dogs that behave like twats usually have owners that behave like twats.

ShowMeTheKittens · 02/07/2019 17:42

I think... he richly deserved it.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/07/2019 17:42

I’d buy a dog and not a squirrel. 😆

Chichef · 02/07/2019 17:45

Thank you 😊

DinosaursWouldEatYou · 02/07/2019 17:47

SoupDragon I first pointed out the man was in the wrong for not having his dog on a leash, and like myself and few other posters have said before children shouldn't be trying to stroke dogs unless the owner has given permission. I understand she was young so really it's the parent that should of intervened.

But anyway we're going off topic.

Hopefully OP he'll find a new track to 'hike' in the future.

DinosaursWouldEatYou · 02/07/2019 17:49

I was wearing a full on ski suit ... to prepare myself for when I go skiing next year

🤣 I wish that was true!

PetrichorRain · 02/07/2019 17:51

Schaden, indeed, that’s why I also said the dog should have been on a lead and the parent shouldn’t have let her child stroke any dog, even if it approached her, unless the owner said it’s ok. Obviously a chihuahua could do some damage and should be restrained if snappy. But I was noting that it’s not quite in the same league as a large snappy dog, in response to another post.

PinkCrayon · 02/07/2019 17:57

"I'm not. It sounded like you were talking about chihuahuas in general."

I was clearly talking about my own chihuahuas @SoupDragon I wouldnt be stupid enough to label a whole breed as cuddly as much as I wouldnt be stupid enough to name an entire breed as one who bites.

Tabitha005 · 02/07/2019 17:59

I don't think you're being unreasonable to have a yell at an irresponsible dog owner who clearly can't control his animal - regardless of its size or apparent ability to cause injury to other dogs or people.

I probs would have done the same had I seen this idiot fail to control his dog on two occasions (the Border Collie incident not having been personally witnessed).
