To not buy new pillows

AliceAbsolum · 30/06/2019 21:55

DH saw a YouTube video and apparently you should buy new ones every 6 months.

Ours are 2 years old and fine, I think this is all just capitalism and it's filthy lies.

After two years you should at least have washed them a few times, if not replaced them. Pillows gather lots of skin cells, dust etc, so I like to replace mine every 18 months or so

raspberryk · 30/06/2019 21:58

I wash mine every 6 months but no need for new ones, I paid 80 quid for mine about 5/6 years ago and it's as good as new.

floraloctopus · 30/06/2019 21:58

They are never the same when you wash them though, it ruins them. I put two pillowcsses on mine and have a pillow protector underneath.

Iggly · 30/06/2019 21:59

I wash mine every now and then but use protectors

Mine come out fine! (They’re not feather ones though)

QuickQuestion2019 · 30/06/2019 21:59

Mine are 6 years old, never washed and no one has died from it. This Mumsnet culture of constantly replacing and washing things is very wasteful

AliceAbsolum · 30/06/2019 22:00

Just normal washing machine wash?

I have pillow protectors and cases on which are both changed every time. I think I've had the same pillows for almost 10 years and they are still perfect. I haven't washed them because they are feather pillows and also because they are extra large and I would only fit one in the machine at a time which seems like a faff.

fecketyfeck21 · 30/06/2019 22:02

use pillow protectors, febreze once a month and replace every two years

HereForAdvice2019 · 30/06/2019 22:03

I used to
But got fed up with it taking 2 months for it to feel comfy and like 'mine
Now I just do when I think they need it. I use a protector and wash my bedding very frequently so not much chance to get bad

EdWinchester · 30/06/2019 22:06

Hmm, ours were new in December, so we are already overdue 🤔

We replace ours when we get new bedding which is every year or so.

Chickydoo · 30/06/2019 22:13

Clearly I am alone in pillowgate.
Have had same pillows for years. 10 or more. Honestly can't remember how long. Pillow cases are washed regularly.

mollycoddle77 · 30/06/2019 22:16

What do you all do with the (not) old ones? Throw them in the bin to go to landfill? It's so wasteful. What is the problem with a 6 month or two year old pillow exactly, do you imagine it will make you ill?

raspberryk · 30/06/2019 22:21

I wash according to the instructions, some are hand wash which I do in the bath with that detol washing cleanser , others up to 60 degs in the machine.
You can wash feather pillows and duvets at 60 in my experience.

BeanBag7 · 30/06/2019 22:21

YANBU to not replace them. Unless your suffering from some skin or respiratory complaint which could be caused by pillow dust/ dead skin then why does it matter if your own dead skin cells touch your face? Do people get ill from old pillows or is it just "ick factor"?

I've had the same pillow for 2.5 years. It's comfortable and wasn't cheap. It hasn't lost its shape or gone all flat. I don't see why I would need to replace it

QuickQuestion2019 · 30/06/2019 22:22

Who has time to wash pillows??

Mumsnet is SO odd.

PookieDo · 30/06/2019 22:25

I wash pillows now and then I thought it was normal? My face is on it all night 😂
I bought a new pillow from ikea yesterday as mine have gone a bit flat and can’t seem to be revived but I won’t throw the old pillow away, I wash it then keep it in one of those vacuum bags in case people come to stay. Unless it’s really rubbish then I would throw it away

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 30/06/2019 22:26

Oh god, I've had my favourite pillow longer than I've had dh. We're married 12 years Blush.

Frlrlrubert · 30/06/2019 22:27

Pretty sure I have a childhood pillow around here somewhere. It must be 20 years old!

I wash the if DD is sick or spills milk or something, otherwise I just get new ones when they're knackered, which is when putting two in one pillow case fails to cut it!

I did buy better quality last time around though, so they're still going strong one in a case a year later 😂

Juells · 30/06/2019 22:30

Pillow protectors under the pillow case.

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 30/06/2019 22:30

what's not normal about washing pillows? Confused

Most of us have washing machines, how long does it physically take to put them in there and put them in a dryer or on an airer in the sun?

It takes just as long to write Who has time to wash pillows??
Mumsnet is SO odd.
as it takes to wash them Grin

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 30/06/2019 22:32

But they come out horribly lumpy from the washing machine

PookieDo · 30/06/2019 22:33

No mine don’t come out lumpy at all
And they dry really fast too

SamBeckett · 30/06/2019 22:39

Unless we buy the ultra cheap pillows there is absolutely know way I could afford to replace them so often . ( even then I wouldn't )
It is down right wasteful , my pillow is about 5 years old I think I have washed it about 5 or 6 times and I am still alive !

Frlrlrubert which is when putting two in one pillow case fails to cut it! I am glad I am not the only one that does this ! Grin

SamBeckett · 30/06/2019 22:43

I bet the you tube video was made by or sponsored by a pillow manufactures Hmm

panimac · 30/06/2019 22:48

Just washed ours (feather and down) as I usually do. 40 degrees wash. They take forever to dry out (outside on the washing line) and need really hot weather for it.
