To ask if you've ever been to a concert with a teenager?

Someone has gifted me and my 17 year old DD tickets to see my favourite band in August. DD seems quite happy and excited as am I but the band is quite popular with teenagers. A few other oldies do like them but I'm just slightly worried DD will be a bit embarrased when we go. I mentioned it to her and she laughed and said "It's not as bad as (a friend of mines DS) going to heavy metal with his nan for his 16th". Which actually happened.

Am I worrying too much? Have any of you been to concerts with DC of a similar age? The concert is in a small venue (a country hall's theatre room) and inside.

We've also got to travel 3 hours on the train so are staying in the city overnight and having a look round the next morning.

I’ve been ( and go) to loads of gigs with my dd and have done since she was about 12 and only been embarrassed by me on one occasion and that was because of something I said . ( apparently too loudly) .

okeydokeygirl · 30/06/2019 17:09

Not gigs but festivals. If your DD wants to go then absolutely take her and have a really good time together. If my DD still wanted to go to a gig with me age 17 I would be over the moon. Have a great time.

Bluerussian · 30/06/2019 17:12

Husband and I went to several concerts, and festivals, with ours and we had a great time. I feel a bit nostalgic reading your first post, op :-).

I'm a bit old for all that now.

Mac47 · 30/06/2019 17:17

Take mine to loads, we have a brilliant time!

tapdancingmum · 30/06/2019 17:20

I went to P!nk last night with my 18 year old and we had a blast. Her 50 year old mum didn't cramp her style 😀

CMOTDibbler · 30/06/2019 17:21

Ds has been to two metal festivals now, and we are going to start taking him to gigs properly come the autumn as there are a few bands we want to see coming near us in smaller venues. He's 13

mabelmylove · 30/06/2019 17:22

I went to quite a few rock concerts with my mum when I was a teen and was never embarrassed!

funnylittlefloozie · 30/06/2019 17:23

I went to see Royal Blood at Ally Pally with my 15 year old DD. I was bored witless but she loved it and i was super-cool for taking her (for about fifteen minutes).

AuntieMarys · 30/06/2019 17:23

Yes...Courteeners when ds was 17 and I was 58. Best night of my life Smile

MrsTommyBanks · 30/06/2019 17:23

Did Madstock with my DS and DD both in their both in their teens at the time.
I've been to a couple of gigs with my youngest DD when she was 16/17. Both were great night's and brilliant memories.
You'll be fine, honestly don't worry. Lots of my friends go to gigs with their teen DC.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 30/06/2019 17:23

Dd will go to any concert with me whether she is a fan or not we go to the theatre fairly frequently as well. She’s almost 16 and doesn’t care. Loves a live show. We are seeing Tom Jones and Michael Bublé this year Grin

FFSMelvin · 30/06/2019 17:26

I've taken my DD to gigs since she was 13 (she's nearly 16 now). For standing gigs I don't stand near her. She goes off into the crowd and we meet back up later. Works well.

I bop at the back and she gets sweaty with the masses and makes new friends.

londonloves · 30/06/2019 17:28

I went to see Blur at Wembley, The Cranberries at the Albert Hall and The Cure at Earl's Court with my Dad when I was 15-17 ish, all amazing. Wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

Oldraver · 30/06/2019 17:30

You're overthinking.

This year we have taken 13 year old to see Good Charlotte and off to see Vampire Weekend later on. Last two years to see other bands.

Only thing I would say is have a look at the venues age policy. A few years ago we had to travel to Newcastle (from Oxford) to find somewhere he could go

Mabelface · 30/06/2019 17:33

Took my teenage son and his mate to see tenacious D and we had an excellent time.

KikiMoo · 30/06/2019 18:00

Thanks all, feel a bit better now. DD actually walked in on me reading the thread Blush

She's told me I'm being silly and she knows a few friends go with their mums. She's said she's not embarrased by it at all but will be if I keep going on about it. Lesson learned Grin

Now I need to by an outfit, not been to a concert since I was I was 8 weeks pregnant with her and didn't know!

yabu to use the word 'gifted'. but not about the gig. took my teen to loads. enjoy!

youwouldthink · 30/06/2019 18:05

It'll be fab! DD15 and I have been going for about 4 years to concerts. Her friends now often join us!

KikiMoo · 30/06/2019 18:06

@Lemoneeza Oh shit, it's not one of those madeup words is it? (Unless in the context of gifted and talented, of course.) I use it all the time Confused

I've been to loads of concerts over recent years with DD2 because our city ( not in uk) has strict rules on unaccompanied teens. I've seen Twenty-one Pilots twice, Halsey, Troye Savan, One Republic, Imagine Dragons, etc. There are loads of parents my age there so not in the least embarrassing. For one concert the venue had kindly provided a 'parent pen' with seating at the back of the hall, where we fogeys all congregated and played on our smartphones (DD was with a friend for that gig so I stayed lowkey, but normally she's happy to bop around with me near the front, but not actually in the moshpit.).

Lastbustowhitehawk · 30/06/2019 18:33

I've been the teenager in question and loved it - my dad took me to see Travis when I was 14 and it was a rare opportunity for us to spend time together Smile

PookieDo · 30/06/2019 18:34

Lots. As I usually pay and transport them I go too!
They go to the radio 1 teen awards without me thoughGrin

Lastbustowhitehawk · 30/06/2019 20:38

How funny, since I posted that having not listened to Travis in years they just came on the radio! I'm feeling quite teary now because I lost my dad a few years ago and really did love that concert. Enjoy the gig with your DD, OP!

BobTheFishermansWife · 30/06/2019 20:42

I used to go to gigs all the time with my dad as a teenager, he is into the same music as me and he was good friends with the owner of one of the local music venues when I was growing up.
I'm 28 and still go with him on occasion.
I wouldn't even think twice about it if she's happy to go with you, have a great time!
