Bloody Mumsnet dd, dc, dm, dh, dp, exh, blah blah blah.

Why do we do it?

WYSIWYG YUOC

SoyDora · 29/06/2019 20:20

You can.

TeddiesAreEverywhere · 29/06/2019 20:23

I don’t like it either. I don’t think it’s any easier to type these days if you’re using a smart phone or tablet. Possibly only quicker on a computer.

Ninkaninus · 29/06/2019 20:23

I actually think in MN abbreviations now, and have to remind myself not to use them when I’m having a conversation IRL.

shesgrownhorns · 29/06/2019 20:25

Oh I already use them even though they make me pause mid sentence to decode them.

When in Rome!

Me too! I said DH at work the other day by accident.

Pinktornado · 29/06/2019 20:31

I LOVE DDog as an abbreviation - always makes me smile (and often the dog seems to be the only true ‘dear’ in many families). I don’t think I’ve ever seen DCat or DGuineapig however.

VenusOfWillendorf · 29/06/2019 20:32

Brevity.

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 29/06/2019 20:35

They have been around for years. I used to be a Guide on AOL in the 1990s (showing my age now) and they were used in chat rooms. There was Internet Relay Chat too and that's where I first saw LOL and PITA.

Dagnabit · 29/06/2019 20:35

Don't be a dFool Wink

Valanice1989 · 29/06/2019 20:44

I can't stand the "D" abbreviations and never use them. Does it really take so much longer to type "son" than "DS"?

Someone once told me she gave Mumsnet a try but couldn't stand all the txtspk and twee "darling" rubbish. It took me a moment to realise she meant the abbreviations!

mathanxiety · 29/06/2019 20:45

I don’t get this at all. It defeats the purpose of an abbreviation. It’s easier to just type dog.

It's just a little quirky levity.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/06/2019 20:48

My fave: stbxh

Bluerussian · 29/06/2019 20:49

Agree with the op, if someone can type it takes hardly time to type husband or children, son or daughter, mother, father, sister, brother, partner.

As for the D prefix, it's just silly (& they are not always D anyway).

supersop60 · 29/06/2019 20:55

it's not compulsory.

pointythings · 29/06/2019 21:07

You won't be able to help yourself...

Thuglife · 29/06/2019 21:07

I thought for ages HTH stood for Hit the Hills Grin .

ComeAndDance · 29/06/2019 21:12

After a while, it will become so normal that you will use them in conversation/text and emails. Grin

shesgrownhorns · 29/06/2019 21:18

What's stbhx ?

Soon to be Ex Husband!

OP posts:
SagAloojah · 29/06/2019 21:20

OP, MN didn’t invite DH, DW, DC etc. They were around long before.

And it’s not a rule to use abbreviations.

SagAloojah · 29/06/2019 21:20

*invent

Snooky84 · 29/06/2019 21:20

Haha I'd been on mumsnet ages before I realised dh stood for darling husband not d**khead which is what I call my hubby when he's pissing me off. Lol

Nearlythere1 · 29/06/2019 21:31

I did a post a little while ago about the stupid abbreviations and especially the insipid "dear everybody". Lots of people agree with you OP.

bingbongnoise · 29/06/2019 21:37

YANBU these abbreviations do annoy me a bit. DF .. is that dear father or dear fiance? DS, is that dear son, or dear sister? SIL - sister in law or son in law???

What gives me the RAGE is DNiece, and DNephew, and DDog, and DCat... etc... FFS! As a pp said, it takes longer than just typing niece, nephew, dog, or cat. I won't even respond to anyone who posts in this manner.

Also...

I am confused about your posts at 21.18 and 21.19.

@shesgrownhorns

what is stbxh?

then...

@shesgrownhorns

Soon to be ex husband.

Did you just ask yourself a question, and answer yourself back a minute later???! Confused
