Too fat for my wedding dress

321Bed · 29/06/2019 13:03

I get married in 8 weeks and have my first wedding dress alterations appointment coming up. I tried on the dress last weekend and I'm embarrassed to say that it's too tight!

It'll do up (just), but I'm not sure how much I'll be able to breathe and my boobs are pretty much falling out!

AIBU to expect that a good seamstress could 'let out' the seams or make adjustments to make it fit? Or am I literally going to have to starve myself for the next month and hope for the best? I have no experience with dressmaking so am trying to figure out how bad this really is...

The seamstress who altered my dress (I had massive changes to mines) said they can let a dress out by up to 2 sizes and take it in by 4 sizes so I’d say find a good seamstress. Hope you have a wonderful wedding.

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/06/2019 14:41

You could get that weight off easily in 2 months or if it’s a ‘good’ brand there will likely be enough in the seams to let it out.

ThatLightIsBright · 29/06/2019 14:42

I don’t agree with the posters advocating fast weight loss of 9lbs in a week etc, that doesn’t sound safe. Far too rapid. I personally wouldn’t do that. You only need to lose half a stone or so over 8 weeks. You can already do the dress up!

AguerosAngel · 29/06/2019 14:44

I put on weight before my wedding for various reasons, and my seamstress was able to put like an extra panel in the side which had elastic in it and it couldn’t be seen at all because of my arms and also my veil.

Would something like that work perhaps? Hope you get sorted xx

MustardScreams · 29/06/2019 14:45

It is much, much harder to let a dress out than it is to take it in. It depends entirely on the seams, how much material is left and how much it will alter the shape of the dress.

Exante is a good choice for a one off to fit into it. It’s not going to harm you for 8 weeks.

If you try to meal replacement .. get waking too ;0)
It will help you lose weight and tone you up ... and lift your mood too .... good luck 💐

Walking I mean

Fundays12 · 29/06/2019 15:01

You could easily lose 1 stone on slimming world in that time. You don’t have to starve either.

Nickki78 · 29/06/2019 15:16

If you can fitted into the dress then you probably need to a few pound (3-6). A whole dress size is 10 - 12 pounds .

If you could up your exercises (avoid lifts etc. Park at the back of car park/ get off the bus the stop before you need too)

Change snacking habits. They are plenty of low calories chocolate/ crisps alternatives so you don’t have to denied yourself the yummy stuff.

Don’t stress as this is totally doable in the timescale.

EmeraldShamrock · 29/06/2019 15:20

8 weeks is lots of time, alterations will cost a fortune.
DP randomly uses slimming world recipes, not made with coke or fanta Envy
He makes vegetable curry, slimming would chips, big pot of vegetable soup and brown bread.
He will drop 2-3lb a week, he usually sticks to it for a month max, then puts it back on with a few extra. Grin

NoSauce · 29/06/2019 15:33

So many people writing loose instead of lose.

Allhailthesun · 29/06/2019 15:49

There’s nothing wrong with eating less! Thin people eat less all their lives...
Three meals consisting of as many vegetables as you want and some protein. No snacks at all.
Job done.

LillithsFamiliar · 29/06/2019 15:52

Five advertising posts seems quite a lot for such a short thread.

stucknoue · 29/06/2019 16:18

I lots 8 pounds in two weeks... it's not a diet reason I recommend (dh leaving) but it's possible to shift pounds quickly by eating essentially grapes and eggs on toast. Lots of green tea and water. It's for a good cause!

OrdinarySnowflake · 29/06/2019 16:19

I have a friend who had a similar issue, but hers wouldn't do up at all - her seamstress changed it from a zip back to a corset style lace up with gorgous silk ribbon that matched the dress and a panel of close matching material to cover the gap at the back of the lacings. If you didn't know, you would think it was just a lovely design feature, so many people commented how lovely her dress was.

Really don't panic or starve yourself.

Peridot1 · 29/06/2019 16:19

You can definitely lose enough weight to be comfortable in your dress fairly healthily in 8 weeks. Slimming World or Weight Watchers or use MFP to count calories. Or just Drink lots of water. Do lots of walking. You don’t need a crash diet. Just eat healthy food, lots of veg, lots of water, cut out sugar, unhealthy snacks and alcohol as much as possible.

You don’t have much to lose if the dress does up. You just want it to do up easily and for you to feel comfortable.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 29/06/2019 16:22

This happened to my sister although to a more drastic level. It would not do up.

She had the back altered from a zipper to a corset. It wasn’t cheap but looked lovely.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 29/06/2019 16:27

Don't do the exante/crash diet crap, don't!

I had my dress made a bit bigger by adding a panel to the sides in the same fabric, it looked good, it is not noticable on photo's

Never normally fluctuated in weight, but nerves got to me

ElizaPancakes · 29/06/2019 16:33

I had gained weight when I had my final fitting, three days before wedding. There was loads of seam allowance that she let out. Took about an hour.

Kolo · 29/06/2019 16:39

I like what your husband to be said, OP. Definitely change the dress rather than yourself.
I was one of the few brides that put on weight before my wedding. When I’m happy, I put on weight. I’ve been very ‘happy’ in my 10year marriage 😃

Allhailthesun · 29/06/2019 17:04

What’s an “extreme” diet?

Of course you can go a few weeks on less than you eat now. If it’s all nutritious stuff she’ll feel better than her normal diet which includes excess crap no doubt.

hammeringinmyhead · 29/06/2019 17:16

I did the cereal diet to fit into mine - cereal for breakfast, cereal and a banana for lunch, normal dinner. Cutting out the massive sarnie or pastie, crisps and coffee at lunch helped a lot.

jinglybell · 29/06/2019 17:23

Intermittent fasting and low carb. Im down 9kg in 8 weeks

Tuktuktaker · 29/06/2019 17:29

Congratulations, OP, you and your fiancé sound lovely!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/06/2019 17:34

I’d forgo the meal replacement shakes- id personally go carb less for a few weeks
