To cut honeymoon short? Heatwave Hell

NC as outing

DH and I planned a wonderful 3 week honeymoon around Europe months and months ago. We’re currently approaching our last week of it (9 days still to go) and in Northern Italy, ITS HELL!

It’s completely unseasonable weather - everywhere around us is on red alert and even the locals/hotel staff just don’t know what to do! We were in a city yesterday it hit the 40’s with 100% humidity and we couldn’t leave the room! Were due to go to Rome today but simply couldn’t face it so diverted to a lake nearby (lost several hundred pounds to do this) and tbh despite showing as cooler (mid thirties) it’s still crazy hot!
DH is really struggling huge heat rash all over his body and I feel unwell with it! We’re fed up and just want to come home but there are basically no flights (or INSANLEY expensive ones) so we’re here in this expensive hotel just hiding all day and venturing out for an hour or two each night to get food!

We have good travel insurance so I’m tempted to call them tomorrow. 😭 I just don’t know what to do! We are supposed to go to another Italian stop after this and then France 😒 all places are on Red alert!

But AIBU to call travel insurance and say ‘it’s too bloody sunny and hot’!

We were in Rome in August three years ago and it was 42 degrees. We stayed at hotel with small pool and got up early to sight see from 6-10am. Went back to hotel for breakfast. Went in pool then went back to room for cool shower and siesta Wink. Got up at 3pm and had a late lunch at hotel and then lazed around pool form 5pm onwards. If hot avoid Metro at all cost with hundreds crammed on to small train carriages.

Drknittingfrog · 30/06/2019 22:07

Temperatures will be dropping a bit next week so you can enjoy the rest of your honeymoon...

GiveUsACoffee · 30/06/2019 22:16

Ostia Beach is around 30 minutes on the Metro from central Rome. Could be a good option to cool off?

Booboo66 · 30/06/2019 22:18

While I’m not really getting the problem because dc and I are on holiday in these conditions and are enjoying it just fine (granted we have use of a pool/beach but no air con to live/sleep) i just came here to find out if this is actually true 👀
Chewable calcium tablets will get rid of the heat rash - get some at the pharmacy.

Would genuinely love to know who your travel insurance company are if they do cover you to choose to come home rather than what they would consider out of your control ie you HAVING to come home. I work at one of the top 5 well known travel insurers and we wouldn’t cover this

Poloshot · 30/06/2019 22:31

What do you want your insurance company to do? 😂

pinkstripeycat · 30/06/2019 22:35

Just thought you MAY be able to claim on your insurance if you have TRAVEL DISRUPTION. It covers travel disrupted by adverse weather

CrisisCrunchie · 30/06/2019 23:09

Head to the Colosseum in Rome! It’s amazingly cool inside, with wonderful stone benches to sit on... We were there in August & the heat was incredible but an hour inside there sorted me out enough to keep going for a few more hours 👌🏻

MdNdD · 30/06/2019 23:21

If you hate it that much, fly home and enjoy sleeping in at home.
Give me 40 degrees over minus six any day (I didn’t grow up in England). I’d happily be there right now!!
It’s not about do this or do that, if you hate it so much just go home and enjoy being together where you are comfortable. That’s what a honeymoon should be about, right?!

StCharlotte · 30/06/2019 23:32

I was in Rome this week. Hot for sure but drank plenty of water and wore a big hat. It was fine and there was no way I was going to miss it.

Anyway, if you've got aircon, just do some, er, "honeymooning" Wink

StCharlotte · 30/06/2019 23:40

Sorry just saw that there are nine pages Blush and I missed eight of them including the cystitis comment.

velocitykate · 01/07/2019 00:13

You poor thing. Yes. Northern Italy/southern Spain are hot at this time of year, but not usually this hot -I don't think I could stick those sort of temperatures - I end to get Pretty uncomfortable when it goes over about 28 in the UK. Unfortunately, most travel insurance doesn't cover for extremes of weather because It' outside of anyone's control.

If you can find an affordable flight/train and Eurostar home, then come home. If not, I would take up all the previous suggestions - sightseeing early morning and at night and sleeping in the hottest part of the day, or taking off into the Italian/Swiss mountains and hoping that it will cool down early in the week. Try to enjoy the rest of your Honeymoon.

I went up Snowden on a really hot day one year - It literally was at least 10 degrees cooler at the top and I was glad I had taken my coat up there, even though dh laughed at me!

bumblingbovine49 · 01/07/2019 00:36

You need to be in the mountains high up, preferably in a wooded location. Lakeside is no good. It will still be hot but usually there is more of a breeze to.make it bearable

Northern Italian towns and cities regularly reach high 30s and sometimes low 40s in the summer.which officially starts in June. It is a but early to.have temps in the 40s, that usually happens in July but I have experienced temperatures of over 30 Deg in northern Italian cities in May . And lots and lots of people don't have air conditioning, despite any most people here think.

I think lake Garda probably is slightly cooler than the cities but it is at the foot of the dolomites. You need to be higher up the dolomites or in the Appenines or the Tuscan Alps.

I would definitely get up.early to.go out and swim and walk etc and nd spend 12- 5 having lunch and snoozing, then go.out again. That actually soumds like my perfect day anyway !!!

tttigress · 01/07/2019 00:44

I live in Switzerland and it is flipping hot (currently can't sleep due to the heat)

However (in Switzerland at least), there is supposed to be a thunderstorm tomorrow, followed by relatively normal whether for the rest of the week (no higher than 30)

areukiddingme · 01/07/2019 00:53

So glad you changed your username, because of my 20 friends that are on honeymoon right now only 4 sets are in Europe. FFS

GinghamStyle · 01/07/2019 03:09

I must say I’m a bit concerned that you’ve chosen to go to Lake Garda where it is always a few degrees warmer!

Creambeforejam · 01/07/2019 06:49

Brits at their finest ; book a holiday in mid summer to the Mediterranean, way too hot, can't cope, complain, ask Mumsnet jury to advice or justify or help come up with an excuse for fleeing the holiday. Lmao.. There is always red alert somewhere on the continent in summer. Lots of great advice given. Enjoy as much as you can and move on. Come on, you can do it. Wine

ImogenTubbs · 01/07/2019 07:05

I only read the first couple of pages but echo the poster who said get up early and then have a siesta (at least a quiet rest in the afternoon even if you don't sleep). I live in Spain and it's the only way to do it in the hot weather. There's a reason the Spanish have siestas! Make sure you have hats, carry water and don't try and do too much.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 01/07/2019 07:06

Poor you, that is too hot

We lived in a country that had humid 35-40 degree heat in.summer, we'd swim early morning, sit in flat watching telly, and spent hours in malls, and cinema (airco!)

Good luck!

Booboo66 · 01/07/2019 07:24

I don't think insurance classes people feeling too hot as an adverse wether claim. It's for things like planes being unable to take off due to high winds or accommodation being damaged

expatinspain · 01/07/2019 07:25

I’m in Spain. Temperatures have dropped about 5 degrees today. My cousin in Milan said they had there too. Hopefully the rest of your week will be ok. Next weekend is hot again, but the next five days are cooler.

NicciLovesSundays · 01/07/2019 08:28

@grumiosmum This is a result of the climate crisis.
Yup. Couldnt agree more.

Passthecherrycoke · 01/07/2019 08:31

We honeymooned in Egypt, it hit 50
Everyday and it was miserable. But that’s the way it goes sometimes. I’m sorry your honeymoon has been ruined

daisyboocantoo · 01/07/2019 08:32

Cooler here too. We had massive storms throughout the night and we are now down to high 20's, 30 max. Phew!

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 01/07/2019 12:30

Central Europe was hotter than Middle East yesterday Shock. At least it dropped a little now to 32 from that 38-40.
I am sitting in comfortable 15 degrees and am enjoying it sooooo much after last weekGrin
