To cut honeymoon short? Heatwave Hell

NC as outing

DH and I planned a wonderful 3 week honeymoon around Europe months and months ago. We’re currently approaching our last week of it (9 days still to go) and in Northern Italy, ITS HELL!

It’s completely unseasonable weather - everywhere around us is on red alert and even the locals/hotel staff just don’t know what to do! We were in a city yesterday it hit the 40’s with 100% humidity and we couldn’t leave the room! Were due to go to Rome today but simply couldn’t face it so diverted to a lake nearby (lost several hundred pounds to do this) and tbh despite showing as cooler (mid thirties) it’s still crazy hot!
DH is really struggling huge heat rash all over his body and I feel unwell with it! We’re fed up and just want to come home but there are basically no flights (or INSANLEY expensive ones) so we’re here in this expensive hotel just hiding all day and venturing out for an hour or two each night to get food!

We have good travel insurance so I’m tempted to call them tomorrow. 😭 I just don’t know what to do! We are supposed to go to another Italian stop after this and then France 😒 all places are on Red alert!

But AIBU to call travel insurance and say ‘it’s too bloody sunny and hot’!

Find an apple store!!! They are beautifully cool, you are allowed to sit there charging your phones. We were in Florence during a heatwave. Got up early and did some museums/churches when we discovered the Apple oasis.. there was a cold water seller outside. It was great. Also buy an umbrella - sounds mad but you will always be in the shade and its cooler than a hat.

Uptheshard · 30/06/2019 18:13

I live in northern italy where you are..i sympathize. Even going sightseeing at 5am isnt rhe solution. By 7am its 25 degrees. We have never known humidity like this. Its enough to make you ill. Were leaving for the uk asap for a cooler summer. Our pets are suffering...basically its a killer heatwave and you cannot walk anywhere. equivalent of middle east. Just book a flight back and sod the cost. Feel for you

Piragnetta · 30/06/2019 18:14

@hotasallhell I’m Italian from the north. If you want to keep cool and are by the area of Verona the southern part of the Garda Lake won’t do. Try to get to the northern part, like Malcesine or go for some daily mountain excursions in trentino Alto Adige

Gilld69 · 30/06/2019 18:17

I came home from turkey a few years back as the heat was unbearable i just couldnt handle it . Went to krakow 3 weeks ago and the locals were complaining about the heat too, its just a shame its spoiling our hols .

HeronLanyon · 30/06/2019 18:29

I’ve been in 44/45 in Luxor and also India. It felt as though the heat was pressing down and as of you were literally being cooked in an oven !
One thing I do love about that heat is that it forces you to respect it - no choice at all other than to keep
Movement outside to a minimum, take lots of breaks/naps in air con where possible/ do as
Much as possible as early as possible.
That level of heat in places not used to it and last year’s beast from the east really have made me realise we are puny in the face of the planet and the planet is in trouble.
Good luck op - and congrats - you’ll look back and laugh.

Abuelan · 30/06/2019 18:38

Oh heck yep whole of Europe on red alert. Lived some 32 years in Spain. If you can’t get home do what the locals do - get out early and do some of what you went there for...
Get back for when the heat of the day is at its highest! Easy now with all the weather apps. Then venture out again late afternoon, to do a bit more then out in evening!
Is your husband well hydrated he needs to be drinking at least 2 litres a day. Good luck

Rache49 · 30/06/2019 18:41

We are not aclimatised to hot weather as we get it sporadically. Dont leave as you only have a few days to go and it's a apecial holiday. No you werent to know when you booked it ages ago that Europe would have this heatwave. Keep hydrated and a pool sounds a great idea.

HeronLanyon · 30/06/2019 18:42

abuelan an odd question but I’ve often thought when in Spain how much laundry everyone must do as in effect they are getting hot and sticky at least three times a day. Is that a mad thought ?

user1492450936 · 30/06/2019 18:44

whereabouts in France? the west coast is quite cool and the rest is supposed to only be mid twenties next week

daisyboocantoo · 30/06/2019 18:46

I also live in Switzerland, which is usually hot in the summer and is also caught in the heatwave. It hit 38 hère yesterday and is currently 33 (8pm).

We are staying inside between 11-4, and only out mornings/late afternoon as PP have said, not far from pool/lake.

Try to relax into it. Forget your schedule. Read books, order cocktails and eat gelato.

Vivianebrookskoviak · 30/06/2019 19:08

If you can get home then do. No point staying and having even more of a miserable honeymoon. Especially if your DH has heat rash. Either that or try to go to a cooler country? I doubt you'll be covered by holiday insurance to give up but I'd just call it quits if possible for where you are at least.

WandaOff · 30/06/2019 19:11

Chewable calcium tablets??!
Really??
If that's true it's amazing. I've read the whole tedious thread trying to find out more.
Do they have to be chewable?

BillieEilish · 30/06/2019 19:15

stucknoe it is 27/28 degrees in Valencia right now. We are on the coast, it is lovely. Thanks for the blanket 'Spain is always like this' though. It truly isn't and is much cooler than Italy or France atm. By about 10 degrees, at least.

When I lived in Rome, once in August, the birds fell drop dead out of the sky. But I did cope, lting in my room, with a fan on!

ThatIsNotAGoodLook · 30/06/2019 19:28

Sorry I haven’t read the whole thread and this isnt directed at OP, just a general comment. These “heatwaves” are likely to become more and more the norm, due to climate change which will have far reaching consequences. It’s very hot in the UK right now. People need to stop flying or seriously reducing it and start living a simpler existence. It’s one thing that we do that dramatically increases our carbon emissions overnight. By flying you are emitting more carbon, than you will in a whole year. And contributing to the problem. If you have a look at a carbon calculator, you will see how awful flying is for the environment and all of our futures.

ThatIsNotAGoodLook · 30/06/2019 19:29

But OP, I would just travel home now if the heat is making it hard to enjoy your honeymoon. That doesn’t sound enjoyable. It’s hot here, I would come home and enjoy the beaches and manageable temperatures here.

Scroungerhere · 30/06/2019 19:51

@ Hotasallhell I reckon it might be worth putting in an insurance claim anyway and then if they formally turn it down try the ombudsman, you have nothing to lose, especially if the cover mentions "extreme" weather. This is extreme and warnings have been issued.

Insurance companies are primed to say "no" but sometimes you can push them to a "yes"!

Scroungerhere · 30/06/2019 19:52

@hotasallhell

Far2go46 · 30/06/2019 19:53

Oh My God! We've gone on holiday!

HeronLanyon · 30/06/2019 19:54

thatisnot agreed. I’ve taken too long to see the edges of this truth.

CauliflowerBalti · 30/06/2019 19:56

I'd come home. Holidays should be FUN, not waking at 5am and going to sit in an Apple store. They're good tips for coping with heat, but I'd sod the money if you can and come home, and have a honeymoon here where you can contemplate moving and fucking and having FUN.

Time off is precious.

sugarplumfairy28 · 30/06/2019 20:16

YABU, I wouldn't say the weather is unseasonable, its summer and it gets hot, especially in Italy, they have 3 month long breaks from school due to the heat. The last few years (we're in Germany) have had really hot summers all over Europe!

By all means book to come home, if you're not happy then that's a perfectly valid reason to cut short a break, but I doubt that reason alone will get you any assistance from travel insurance, essentially you're saying I knew it was going to be hot, but its hotter than I like.

rosesandcashmere · 30/06/2019 20:27

Get on air b&b and the train to lake Garda. It's not THAT hot. Drink water, wear a hat. Enjoy yourself

GabsAlot · 30/06/2019 20:30

anyway you can get ryanair or easyjet flights back-id be the same i just dont cope

Heat rash is horrible aswell had it a few times

Abuelan · 30/06/2019 21:05

Heronlaynon
I think you become acclimatised. I don’t think I do any more washing here than I do in my holiday home in Scotland !! Only change again if I’m going out socially either in aft or pm and I’ve never been told I smell or I’m sticky / sweaty !! In fact it’s not often that I’m hot really as tend to live like a local out early then in when it’s teally hot ! But good question 😎
