To cut honeymoon short? Heatwave Hell

NC as outing

DH and I planned a wonderful 3 week honeymoon around Europe months and months ago. We’re currently approaching our last week of it (9 days still to go) and in Northern Italy, ITS HELL!

It’s completely unseasonable weather - everywhere around us is on red alert and even the locals/hotel staff just don’t know what to do! We were in a city yesterday it hit the 40’s with 100% humidity and we couldn’t leave the room! Were due to go to Rome today but simply couldn’t face it so diverted to a lake nearby (lost several hundred pounds to do this) and tbh despite showing as cooler (mid thirties) it’s still crazy hot!
DH is really struggling huge heat rash all over his body and I feel unwell with it! We’re fed up and just want to come home but there are basically no flights (or INSANLEY expensive ones) so we’re here in this expensive hotel just hiding all day and venturing out for an hour or two each night to get food!

We have good travel insurance so I’m tempted to call them tomorrow. 😭 I just don’t know what to do! We are supposed to go to another Italian stop after this and then France 😒 all places are on Red alert!

But AIBU to call travel insurance and say ‘it’s too bloody sunny and hot’!

Like a few other people have said, the heatwave is forecast to last a couple of days more in France. Seems a shame to miss nine days of holiday for a couple of days of heatwave.

Also, if you're rescheduling - look into mountain resorts. Anything over 1000m will be a lot more bearable, especially at night.

Sorry I've reported my post and asked for it to be deleted, I posted it on the wrong thread!

FloorOfDespair · 29/06/2019 06:35

But it's not the hot weather that is ruining your holiday it's a lack of common sense and a fear of what the clock says.

As pp have said, get up early when it's cool, stay inside between 11-4 and go out in the evening. Ruining your holiday just because you don't want to get up when the clock says 6 is ridiculous. It's hardly like work!

And if the op is strapped for cash, why the hell are people suggesting they go from Italy to Switzerland?!?

Whilst I am sure the extreme heat is uncomfortable, OP, I agree with others about getting up really early and enjoying the cool early mornings It really is the best time of day! We are lucky to even have the option of air conditioned hotels, spas, restaurants, etc. - imagine what it was like before AC was invented!!

AnthonyCrowley · 29/06/2019 06:47

How long is it likely to last for? I thought it was cooling down by Tuesday? Which would mean you might get a few days of Cooler weather so you can do more?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/06/2019 06:51

Adding to everyone else’s comments, change your routine, go out early with plenty to drink, and do your sightseeing in public. Churches are always cool so make sure you find out where they are.

Not helpful, but here in Southern Spain we are missing the extreme heat and are having a lovely normal summer.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/06/2019 06:52

*in public? Don’t know where that came from! Blush

nicecuppaforme · 29/06/2019 06:59

I was in Turkey in August one year in a heat wave. It was so hot you could hardly breath.
I just stayed in the pool or the air conditioned room. Ventured out about 11pm for food.

toomuchtooold · 29/06/2019 07:01

Get the train to Switzerland but then keep going into Germany - the southern Black Forest area is way cheaper and has lots of open air swimming pools. If you can stay somewhere along the Rhine there's like one in every town. And it's not school holidays till the end of July so it shouldn't be totally overbooked. It is still boiling here though.

ForalltheSaints · 29/06/2019 07:02

Churches and museums are likely to be the best places, and going out early. I cannot imagine travel insurance paying out.

Allhailthesun · 29/06/2019 07:17

I’d carry on.
I get what you are saying about DH not wanting to get up early as he has to for work. However getting up early when it’s your choice is different to having to be up. You will feel like you are getting the most out of the time. You’ll look forward to the afternoon siesta session of sex and sleep. Back out in the evening.
You can do Rome very easily and cheaply from the U.K. in a weekend. Don’t feel bad about missing it.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/06/2019 07:20

We’re in France; live here!
It’s going to be 40 degrees today and we got up at 6am to get some landscaping done.
If you’re still game, come to sw France. Temp drops to 30 degrees tomorrow. It’s cold and fresh in the morning till noon.
Lots of castles with metres thick walls to visit in the afternoon, and lakes and rivers to swim in for free.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 29/06/2019 07:24

Too hot to leave your room? You're on your honeymoon, no need to leave your room Grin

rookiemere · 29/06/2019 07:25

I feel your pain OP. Went to Bologna with friends a couple of weekends ago and due to the heat - was "only" low 30s at that point - spent most of our time eating or drinking in the shade and binned off a day trip to Florence because it would have been unreasonably hot.

If it's any consolation we had the opposite problem on our honeymoon- a cold spell in the US Rockies in June. We'd hired a convertible and had to get snow chains for it Grin. We ended up bailing on our original plan and driving down to Vegas to get some sun. Cost a fortune, but worth it for the memories.

If you can go home and get money back from insurance I'd do it. I wouldn't want to be getting up at 5am on my honeymoon either.

LetThePotatoRest · 29/06/2019 07:32

It sounds like you might be at Lake Como. If so, just head up into the mountains. Hire a car with air con and go and explore the Valtellina or St Moritz. Plenty of cool, fresh water swimming up there.

distantdog · 29/06/2019 07:35

Don't know why some people are giving the OP pissy responses - this is their honeymoon and DH is covered in a rash and the OP is unwell, plus they have had to spend loads of extra money just to get to that state of discomfort.

There is no way I'd be wanting to get up at 5 or 6 in the morning on my honeymoon either!

ravenshope · 29/06/2019 07:37

I would go home.

SWCharlie · 29/06/2019 07:40

Head up into the Dolomites! It's only 2 to 3 hour drive from Lake Garda if you're there but so much cooler in the mountains and one of the most stunning places I've ever visited. Shouldn't be missed anyway!

OldAndWornOut · 29/06/2019 07:42

Me too.

WhiteDust · 29/06/2019 07:42

I’m in Rome right now, and with broken aircon. It’s hot, no denying it. Hasn’t stopped us and millions of other tourists getting on with it.

Helpful. Hmm

lovelyupnorth · 29/06/2019 07:49

I’d be making the most of the cooler parts of the day and banging the afternoon away.

You are on honeymoon after all

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 29/06/2019 07:53

I'm sorry but this is a first world problem

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 29/06/2019 07:54

You’re on your honeymoon, have a legitimate reason to be stuck in your hotel room and this is a problem?!
