FIFA Men's World Cup

Whilst I am delighted that women's sport is finally getting some decent TV coverage, it is also highlighting to me the accepted norm that all sport is men's except when it is specifically titled women's.

AIBU to think its high time that prof. sporting tournaments are actually titled Men's as well as Women's.

I know there are much bigger things to worry about but when girls give up sport a good 2 years before boys (on average) every little helps to normalise all sport is for men AND women.

The last Men's Football World cup it was referred to as the Men's World Cup pretty much everywhere, OP. For the first time most channels distinguished it as such.

So on that basis YABU.

Really Tallgreenbottle?
I have never heard it referred to as that.

I’ve been thinking this too OP.

I also never heard the men’s World Cup referred to as that.

Lifecraft · 28/06/2019 13:41

YABU.

Women's football is called women's football because mostly it's played by men. So "football" just refers to men's football. That's exactly the same reason why we have male nurses, but we never use the term female nurses. Female nurses are just called nurses.

Gymnastics, which is done equally by men and women, is referred to as men's and women's. If men formed a netball team, then it would be men's netball. But you wouldn't say women's netball, that would continue to be just netball.

You are inventing a discrimination issue where there really isn't one.

flapslack · 28/06/2019 13:42

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Women%27s_World_Cup

Even Wiki defaults to FIFA Football (men's version) and FIFA Women's Football for women (obvs.)

I think @Lifecraft has it right in that sports with equal participation do tend to define men's and women's, and predominantly male sports such as football, rugby and cricket don't.

HOWEVER I don't see what difference it would make to just stick it on. Presumably the idea is to get more women playing football so why not treat it like a truly mixed sport preemptively?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/06/2019 13:45

Yanbu

I have tried to say men’s rugby and men’s football as much as possible Grin

Although i dont like football or rugby and as dh and my dad watch mens and womens rugby and womens and men’s football it does feel slightly like im being tortured

CrumpetWithMarg · 28/06/2019 13:47

It was referred to as the Men's World Cup last year.

Does it really matter, in the grand scheme of things?

People are watching it, enjoying it, talking about it and celebrating the team, is that not enough?

Some things have to be gender identified, or else we could call them both the FIFA Football World Cup and just leave it at that?

This gender sensitivity in everything is getting beyond ridiculous.

flapslack · 28/06/2019 13:53

Lifecraft.

I have not said it's discrimination, I am merely saying that a small change might help young women feel they are equally entitled to play the big money sports as equals rather than secondary versions of the 'real thing'.

Fair enough, but why would they think it's a secondary version of the real thing? Do male nurses feel what they do is less valid, just because there are fewer of them and so they are referred to as male nurses?

"People are watching it, enjoying it, talking about it and celebrating the team, is that not enough?"

Are you content that women get a tiny proportion of financial and training support compared to men? I am not.

I did say that it is not a massively important thing in my OP but just a subtle title which labels women's sport as secondary to men's.

MorningRichie · 28/06/2019 14:01

Halloumimuffin, the men's cricket World Cup is going on at the moment and it is described by the media and the ICC as the men's.

flapslack · 28/06/2019 14:07

Cricket World Cup
This article is about the men's tournament.

For the women's tournament, see Women's Cricket World Cup.

This petty peeve had been around for a few years!

The FIFA World Cup was established first, hence it doesn't need adjectival assistance! It's similar to the golf, there are the French, American etc Opens, in the UK it's The Open, not the British Open as it was the first one, the others need the adjective.

flapslack · 28/06/2019 14:10

I am pretty sure male and female nurses get the same opportunity to training and pay?

I went to watch the Lionesses a couple of years ago. In an international match. It was played in my local stadium (crappy division) and cost £5 each to see it.
If I'd gone to watch the Men's match of the local team against another league member it would have cost £25.
That and the fact the captain of the women's team gets £30k a year compared the likes of Wayne Rooney on £300k a week.
I know its not the point of the thread but calling it women's football.always makes me.feel as though it might as well say "not real football"

Fuck me that was quick

Lifecraft · 28/06/2019 17:18

I'm pretty sure male and female nurses are just as popular with the public.

The problem for women's football is that it's just not as popular with football fans, male and female. I know a good few female football fans who have no interest in watching women's football.

The money male football brings in doesn't come from a magic money tree, it's self generated. Billions of pounds for the tv rights, tens of millions from sponsorship, and millions of people paying high prices for tickets.

Women's football only generates a fraction of the income. It's just basic economics.

Lifecraft · 28/06/2019 17:23

Yes, and Deborah Meaden earns a lot more running her business that my window cleaner earns running his. That's not a downer on men, it's just that her business brings in a shitload more money from it's customers, so she can take more out of it.

isthatapugunicorn · 28/06/2019 17:51

Once football played by women becomes more common and popular it’ll even out, I wouldn’t worry about it too much! At the moment it’s just World Cup in our house as it’s the only one going on!

isthatapugunicorn · 28/06/2019 17:52

The World Cup is doing wonders for women’s football - it’s great to watch Footie that has a more family atmosphere and a lot less ego involved.
