Whilst I am delighted that women's sport is finally getting some decent TV coverage, it is also highlighting to me the accepted norm that all sport is men's except when it is specifically titled women's.

AIBU to think its high time that prof. sporting tournaments are actually titled Men's as well as Women's.

I know there are much bigger things to worry about but when girls give up sport a good 2 years before boys (on average) every little helps to normalise all sport is for men AND women.

Slightly off topic, but as a bit of interesting background info, the strength of the US Women's team is owed to a law passed in 1972 few people outside of the US have ever heard of called Title IX:

www.womenssportsfoundation.org/education/title-ix-and-the-rise-of-female-athletes-in-america/

It mandated that American universities provide equal opportunities to women in all areas, including sports. To show compliance, uni's had to have similar numbers of men and women actively engaged in sports. They did this by setting up women's teams in everything from fencing to crew to soccer football and actively recruiting women athletes. Penalties for non-compliance are severe, so uni's have spent millions support women's sports.

So today, thanks to Title IX, we have a world class women's football team.

I'll be watching the game obviously. Go Lionesses! Go Team USA!
