Do you actually cater if you go self catering...

NaomifromMilkshake · 28/06/2019 11:42

We just use our apartment as somewhere to sleep and hang on the balcony and we use the fridge for wine and beers and snacks... and the makings of light lunch or breakfast...

My DM is horrified at what she considers a waste of money, seemingly you should cater in SC....

In her defence she is 80 Grin and a war child.

I'm with you. Does she want to cook for you?

PaperFlowers4 · 28/06/2019 11:48

Yes. I hate having to eat out for every meal.

Usually we will have the main meal at lunch at a restaurant and then just have a light supper - pasta, big salad etc - at night.

bigshiplittleboat · 28/06/2019 11:51

I do but we are generally always on a limited budget and also two family members have allergies so if we in a country where our language skills are not great it's safer for us

Birdie6 · 28/06/2019 11:51

Yes I do. We buy breakfast food, and the makings for lunches, ie sandwiches or salads. Sometimes we eat out in the evenings but not every night - to expensive and I get sick of it. I'd rather buy some fish and chips or similar and eat in.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 28/06/2019 11:54

No I don’t, who wants to cook on holiday?

Self catering to me means eating in restaurants, take aways. I might open a bag of crisps or nuts for snacks with wine but that’s it!

AbGonk · 28/06/2019 11:54

Surely, SC gives you the option to do as you please. We like to do a mixture of eating in and out.

How old are you, OP?

youngestisapsycho · 28/06/2019 11:56

I think it depends where you are, how long for and what your budget is?

Butterbeeeen · 28/06/2019 11:57

I don't. Occasionally we will have cheese and ham in the fridge for lunch but I'm so lazy I normally get a baguette and dip it in alioli or similar instead. Evening meal is restaurant

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 28/06/2019 11:57

When DS was younger we would often have dinner in, that would be a mix of takeaways or super easy food like pizza. When we SC in the UK we do eat in as there usually aren't that many restaurants nearby, but I've got that down to a fine art so it's really easy.

youngestisapsycho · 28/06/2019 11:59

Last year we were in a hotel in Spain for a week.. no proper cooking facilities. We ate dinner out every night.
Previous holiday was 2 weeks in a villa... we had bbqs and salad some nights, some nights went out, some nights had takeaway.

TeenTimesTwo · 28/06/2019 11:59

I try to avoid it.

If abroad then we do our own breakfasts, and store ice creams in the freezer, but aim to have all meals out.

If in UK, eg at holiday park then I will do some meals in, but only quick meals like pasta, or convenience food.

Menu planning, cooking and washing up is not a holiday for me!

APurpleSquirrel · 28/06/2019 12:03

In Lanzarote last month, we had breakfast in the villa, and either ate a main meal at lunchtime, or had a BBQ in the evening.

In Italy a few years ago, we mainly ate out, but two nights stayed it and had some fabulous fresh fish from the fish mongers down the street.

Whereas, in the New Forest just before Christmas, we ate out every day.

Just depends on circumstances, finances, and what is available locally.

Spanneroo · 28/06/2019 12:05

We usually eat out two or three times in the week, but self cater the rest. We're almost always on a tight budget, and have kids who crash out between 6 and 6:30pm so it's nice to be home and settled by then rather than deal with overtired kids on the way home after a nice meal.

I love cooking though so I don't mind - but we always ensure there's a dishwasher!

KatherineJaneway · 28/06/2019 12:07

I'm like you OP, stuff for breakfast, snacks and wine but prefer to eat out. I like cooking but a break from the cooking and washing up is what a holiday is about to me.

NaomifromMilkshake · 28/06/2019 12:08

Not sure why my age is relevant.

We cook breakfast, usually eat out for lunch or buy bread and meats from supermarkets and store in fridge, and cook 8 out of say 10 evening meals

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2019 12:12

Depends
If I feel like cooking I will and by cooking I mean make a salad and serve it with something from the bbq
Dd is a veggie and where we mostly visit in Spain the veggie food can get a bit monotonous so I sometimes cook for her.
Also I like to get some nice fish from the market and make a coconutty curry occasionally
However, if I can’t be bothered we just go out

RainOrSun · 28/06/2019 12:14

Easy breakfast, made by whoever is up and hungry first.
Snacky lunch made by me or DH if we are about. Snacky lunch out if we are our and about.
Usually big dinner out.
So, minimal cooking, minimal washing up, but I cant face eating out 3 times a day! And definitely not with kids that think 6am is a lie in!!!

IamPickleRick · 28/06/2019 12:15

I do a pasta dish or pizzas or salad etc part of the time and we have a few meals out as well. Use the kitchen for packed lunches and breakfasts. Like others have said, cook for kids then put them to bed and have something nice for ourselves.

PutyourtoponTrevor · 28/06/2019 12:16

Might get croissants in the morning and heat in the oven, apart from that, no

rookiemere · 28/06/2019 12:17

We do the same as you OP. Breakfast in the apartment, lunch is either packed lunch or out and dinner is invariably out. If we're away for longer than a week or we're getting bored of eating out we might have a bbq or takeaway. I go on holiday to get a break from cooking- amongst other reasons.

Stationeryqueen · 28/06/2019 12:17

Really depends.

In UK with extended family, we eat in and will take turns making something nice. We will have a takeaway one night and a nice breakfast each morning and forgo lunch. My DM hates eating out and it can be a logistical nightmare getting something suitable for a mix of tastes/demands & a toddler. We always book SC with a dishwasher & take a decent kitchen knife and chopping board.

Abroad in SC - DP & I just eat what we fancy and when, a mix of salads, sandwiches picnic type of food. We will eat out at least half the time, but I tend to loose my appetite in the heat. I love food shopping abroad, (markets & supermarkets). We try to buy local fresh foods and ingredients and sample local specialties.

BiddyPop · 28/06/2019 12:18

We have a DD who is fussy about food (SN issues) so we aim to have nice food that we will enjoy eating available, and the makings of some nice meals that are easy to prepare.

We will generally eat out a fair amount, at least one meal per day.

The fridge also gets well used to cool drinks.

But on holidays, we will still cook some things, like BBQing, or very easy meals, in a relaxed fashion. Then again, we all enjoy cooking to a greater or lesser extent, it is only for 3 people, and we all muck in together to do it.

Not like growing up where there were 6 DCs, no money to eat out (maybe once in the holiday) and the prepping and cooking were generally left mostly to DM and the older DCs, DF may have BBQ'd a few nights but standing turning steak with a beer in hand.

Toooldtocareanymore · 28/06/2019 12:18

but you are self catering - breakfast and lunch, and I find often places that are self catering are really poorly stocked beyond the few pots, cutlery and dish ware etc, it can be hit and miss, I remember on holidays cooking pasta for kids and then having to try drain with a plate over saucepan as no strainers, sieves, large spoons or even saucepan lids, or they will only have one salad bowl but nothing to make dressing in so you have to buy a whole bottle for the one meal, and often no really sharp knives, things like garlic presses and chopping boards usually missing too, its nice to have the option if its a long day and you don't want to go out to get takeaway, or do something quick and easy, for example often on holiday we will roast a chicken but eat it hot with bread and bought salads, or do the odd bbq, or cold meats cheese and olives type dinners, that's all most people want from self catering in an evening I assumed.

BiddyPop · 28/06/2019 12:19

Oh, and we also enjoy ambling around the locality, finding local ingredients, and trying out new things when on hols too! Grin
