What annoys you about driving today?

Tootytata · 28/06/2019 11:01

I was driving along at under 30mph on a busy main road. A car was trying to pull out but traffic was flowing in both directions. I drove up to this car (which was waiting at the junction to cut across my lane and turn right).

Even though traffic was flowing at 30mph on both sides, this person (don't want a gender debate!) nudged half of her car onto the main road so I had to swerve (almost into oncoming traffic) to avoid crashing!

I looked in my rear view mirror. The guy behind me gave this person a look! Nobody sounded their horn though. I wish I did! WIBU to sound your horn in this situation?

Any driving annoyances happen to anyone else today?

The fact that everyone is SO aggressive. Heaven forbid you make a mistake or hesitate a second too long, you're subjected to a torrent of abuse, beeping and gesturing.

Is this a case of rural versus town? We find that on the country roads people are far more courteous than in the towns and cities.
I love driving, I can happily drive all day, with appropriate breaks, but most of my annoyance is against those who buy vehicles they can't manage, especially in car parks and those who tootle alng on the middle of the road, whatever the speed limit.

EBearhug · 28/06/2019 13:57

Nobody is obliged to let you out, that’s a massive annoyance of mine

No, but they don't have to queue across the side road entrances, particularly when there are KEEP CLEAR signs on the roadway in front of it. Quite a few drivers don't seem to understand what box junctions are for these days, either, going by the one nearest here.

GinDaddy · 28/06/2019 15:40

My biggest pet peeve is people middle lane hogging. And I mean I’m driving junction after junction, and there’s a car sitting in the middle lane, just ambling along and not recognising people have to cross multiple lanes to get around them.

There was an advert on the radio just yesterday from the Highways Agency. It said “keep left at all times unless overtaking”, essentially the very words in the Highway Code.

Yet I can guarantee you I’d meet people arguing the toss to me that “but it’s rutted in the first lane; lorries sit there not cars; but people tailgate, what about speeders why not focus on them” and other whatabouttery designed to justify their CF behaviour of claiming a lane and inconveniencing others

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/06/2019 15:48

People who react slowly when the traffic lights turn green and/or just bumble along casually towards them with all the time in the world. Meanwhile I'm stuck behind you and I'm going to miss the green light because of your bumbling. If you drove at a sensible speed (still within the speed limit), both cars would make it through on green. Argh.

Where I live there's traffic lights everywhere so one bumbling driver causing you to miss green at the lights can easily add an extra 15-20 mins to your journey time because of the way the traffic lights are phased (because the council are trying to make life as difficult as possible for drivers).

MrPan · 28/06/2019 15:49

Let's take a short cut here.

There is something about driving a private car that induces utter selfishness and put their needs to get somewhere before others. Cars are a symbol of the self-concerned nature of capitalism. They are also very closely aligned to sense of personal 'image'. They are the ultimately anti-human survival icon. It's the me-me-me thing that they unleash.

So talking about tailgating and not letting in and the like sort of need putting into this context.

I think.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/06/2019 15:54

The fact that everyone is SO aggressive. Heaven forbid you make a mistake or hesitate a second too long, you're subjected to a torrent of abuse, beeping and gesturing.

Where I live in London it's VERY aggressive. You can't show even a hint of weakness or some f*cker will cut you up immediately and there are people are constantly trying to push in even though you have right of way. Everyone drives very close to each other to prevent this. Driving in my part of London is exhausting! But I find outside central London that the majority of drivers are really very lovely. My driving style and behaviour changes as a result and I feel like a nice person again.

dottypotter · 28/06/2019 15:55

There is not much courtesy on the road. Nobody wants to let people out. They need help sometimes though. It does not make sense.

Scoobydobbywho · 28/06/2019 16:00

People who don't use their indicators and those who drive to close to the back of my car like its a bitch on heat. Those are my main gripes. Angry

dottypotter · 28/06/2019 16:26

@EBearhug no your wrong, no wonder the world has become a hostile place with an attitude like yours.

There are times you need to be let out otherwise you wait for ages and ages there is never a break. You would literally be there for hours the number of cars on the road. Its also common courtesy. People help each other. Ive seen people instead of slowing down and waving someone on or out they go round the car. Awful or they speed up.

RedSheep73 · 28/06/2019 16:39

It's just the other drivers that piss me off. The speed merchants who are up my arse the whole time because I'm doing 30 in the 30 zone. The wombles who insist on doing 35 everywhere, whether the limit's 30 or 60. The ones who slow down to 30 when they see a speed camera even though there's a massive 40 sign next to it. I mean, do they actually think the camera is set to a lower limit than the road? Do they think the road itself was 30 but it's fine to do more unless there's a camera? I could go on.

ForalltheSaints · 28/06/2019 16:40

Top of my list is those making a journey that could be walked (most under a mile unless not able-bodied).

CremeEggThief · 28/06/2019 16:45

I'm a non-driver, but as a pedestrian and a bus user, almost everything annoys me about car drivers. I'm 41 and I don't think I've ever gone a day in my life, when I've left my house, without feeling at least mildly irritated by a car driver.

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 28/06/2019 16:45

Drivers who are too arrogant to acknowledge you when you pull over to let them through (especially when the obstruction is on their fucking side of the road!!).

Tailgating when I’m driving at the speed limit.

Not using indicators.

Illegal u-turns on A roads.

Too many to mention really.

LakieLady · 28/06/2019 17:01

A police patrol car turned right in front of me this morning, when there really wasn't a big enough gap. No blues and twos, no indicators, but I was kind of ok with it.

But then, when round the corner and out of my eyeline, he did a u-turn and pulled out right in front, causing me to slam my anchors on so hard my seatbelt locked up. The side road he came out of is one-way, so you don't normally have to be aware of anyone who might come out of there.

Then he went about 50 yards up the road and stopped just short of give way lines, but he wasn't giving way, he was just stopping. Both officers got out and started running down another side road, so I had to pull out round the car and wait at the give way, with most of my car on the wrong side of the road.

The driver (who was a fat bastard) only ran about 10 yards before he came back, got in the car, and followed me down the road.

I dealt with my rage by singing the first couple of lines of "Laughing Policeman" ("I know a fat policeman/He comes from down your way") to myself.

If they're going to do fast pursuit driving tactics, they should have their flashing lights on, so other drivers no to expect them to do weird things.

Generally, people not indicating and people who block side roads and exits on to roundabouts.

LakieLady · 28/06/2019 17:10

People who react slowly when the traffic lights turn green

Every now and then, the council fuck about with the timing of the busy traffic lights near me. The lights have 3 traffic phases plus a pedestrian phase. Locals know that as soon as westbound traffic stops, the northbound lights will go green and we're all on the ball and off like a greyhound out of the traps.

A few weeks ago, the council's latest bid to ease congestion at the crossroads mean that northbound traffic only got a green light for long enough to let just about 8 cars to get through, causing a big tailback all the way down the hill.

Coming home from work one day I finally got to about 5th in the queue, when the dopey pillock at the front took so long to get moving on green that only 3 cars managed to cross.

I seethed for all of the extra 5 minutes I had to wait.

FairySunbath · 28/06/2019 17:16

I swear today is Dickhead Day on the road. I've seen so many shocking things today that I've no idea where to start. It's like being on the dodgems most days but today was particularly bad. Maybe the sun has fried people's brains.

Xyzzzzz · 28/06/2019 17:16

I hate driving in general. I don’t like cyclists or drivers who don’t say thank you when when you let them in or go ahead

DaisyChains6 · 28/06/2019 17:16

Sometimes you have to stick your nose out though. Not because you have just pulled up at the junction and you're being impatient but because you've sat there for ages and it's unlikely anyone will let you out if you don't start to nudge your way out.

proudestofmums · 28/06/2019 17:22

Big traffic island on way into my town. 5 exits. One major road and 3 minor ones. The majority of the time I am crossing from one minor road to another lorries come tearing up to the island on the major road to my left and charge across without looking, cutting me up so I have to slam my brakes on (well, I don’t because all locals know that’s what happens nd drive particularly slowly). I know it’s the majority of the time because I once kept a mental record.just why do lorry drivers driving lethal heavy vehicles think they don’t have to give Way at roundabouts and are entitled to cause traffic ON the roundabout to stop for them?

I feel better now

procrastinatingtoday · 28/06/2019 17:26

@tootytata were you really going 50mph, and not 45mph? And even if you were 50, why does it matter that people go faster than you 🤔

My pet peeves are not indicating (changing lanes, leaving roundabouts ...) and middle lane drivers. In US they have minimum speed at motorways, wish UK would implement the same. And move over the left lane if you're not overtaking.

swingofthings · 28/06/2019 17:28

2 lanes, coming to a round about. Long queue on the right to turn right at round about. No queue on left lane.

Inevitably, you have the self entitled idiots who think that waiting is for others and they are too important to wait, so they go on the left lane and then pull in front of those at the start of the queue.

It's not them who annoy me the most, they are self-centered imbeciles, but I get so annoyed with those who just let them pull in front of them. My MIL says she can't be bothered to battle with them, which is her choice but it's people like her who let the imbeciles continue to cut people off because they know they'll always weak people let them through.

What is mind-blowing is when one of them try it with me, don't get through and then act all outraged because I'm not bowing to their supremacy!

bourbonbiccy · 28/06/2019 17:47

Arrrr I could go on and on but my main ones
People who don't indicate, just gets me so angry. I've had 3 people pulling into my lane without indicating and causing me to slow down

Middle lane drivers why why why !!!!! If you are such a nervous driver that you just have to stay in the middle lane , you shouldn't be in the motorway !!!!!!!!

people who don't say thank you just rude

DappledThings · 28/06/2019 17:51

All the absolute fuckers doing 40 in the 60 every chugging day. It's a big A road. It's a bit bendy, nothing tight, 60 completely reasonable. But no, I'll just drift along at 40 and carry on at 40 through the villages.

I hate these people.

Scoobydobbywho · 28/06/2019 18:26

Drivers who go through amber traffic lights when there is plenty of time to stop.

Tootytata · 28/06/2019 18:33

Procrastinatingtoday - there was a 50mph limit on the motorway (signs everywhere). I was going 50mph and a lot of people overtook me! Therefore they were speeding above the legal limit!
