To think people spend too much on their children

I'm in my late 20s with no children.

I've started a new job were there are 3 people in their early 20s. 2 with children and 1 pregnant.

They earn the same as me £25-30k. One said all three of his children had versace dummies £90?? And another is looking at £130 Gucci shoes for her new born. The other said her little girl has loads of stuff and shell buy £100+ items.

What in the world?!

I'd maybe consider it if I was taking home a 6 figure salary after tax for a baby but AIBU to think its ridiculous?!

I buy expensive things for my DC in the sale. I spend more on big items than basics so undies are probably from Asda but a coat might be from Barbour. The one thing I splurge on is shoes because I think cheap shoes damage kids feet. But not designer shoes just good quality orthopedic ones. Maybe the people you’re talking about just buy a few posh items for ‘show’ ?

Iron ... baby clothes? Yeah that’s not happening Grin

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 28/06/2019 14:15

I will spend money on things that will improve my child's wellbeing - things like more family time, education, activities - but spending money on designer clothes does nothing for your child's happiness or wellbeing and in fact teaches them poor life lessons about consumerism which will likely reduce their happiness in future.

Teddybear45 · 28/06/2019 14:18

Their kids. Can spend whatever they want on them. What’s it to you?

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 28/06/2019 14:29

People spend loads of money on loads of stuff I don't understand. Cars, games consoles, holidays you could get cheaper with a bit of googling. But then a lot of people wouldn't understand the vast sums I have wasted on takeaway pizzas :D

Lifeover · 28/06/2019 14:31

I suppose its better than buying lots of cheap tat (surely the more expensive the tat the less they can buy) but to be honest they sound a bunch of chavs

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 28/06/2019 14:33

ps you would see my kids in designer clothes sometimes, but very much purchased out of season from ebay/charity shop. So not all those kids in designer clothes are having hundreds spent on them... at least I hope not :0

Celebelly · 28/06/2019 14:34

You're meant to iron baby clothes? Well shit.

I like buying clothes for DD, but they're hardly designer. A blend of supermarket and JoJo Maman Bebe, Blade and Rose. Today she is sporting her dinosaur outfit GrinI probably do spend more on her than is necessary but she's my first and will be my only and it makes me happy to get her fun clothes and nice things.

I used to buy loads of different collars for my dog for this reason too!

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 28/06/2019 14:34

Not nice to call people chavs... some of us are just good at spotting deals, being thrifty and presenting ourselves well on little money

Yabbers · 28/06/2019 14:41

Oh yay! A person without children who thinks they could do it better. We love those, don’t we?

Some people prioritise spending differently to you. I assume that’s not a difficult concept to grasp.

Am boggling at the idea of ironing baby clothes, my daughter lives in whatever combo of t shirt and leggings (usually from Asda) I pull out of the dryer

BarrytheFatcat · 28/06/2019 15:01

My mum kept going on about how I should wash and iron all my babies clothes before she was born, I had loads of clothes and barely iron my own clothes BTW.

whothedaddy · 28/06/2019 15:02

probably a lot spent on Credit cards.
I do think a lot of younger parents feel the need to buy branded stuff for children as a way of showing the world they are coping with being young parents and can provide for them just as well as older parents.

Where’s the women with the joint incomes of 50 odd grand a year don’t even look like they’ve ironed their babies clothes sometimes!

With such wealth they can pay a little woman to iron for them. Hmm
