To ask how you would spend your time if you had enough money not to need to work

Let’s imagine you came into some money (doesn’t matter how, but legally), which put you in a position to pay off any debts and mortgage, buy a house outright if you don’t already own one, and provide you with a household income similar to what you currently have. Or more if you’re skint.

Basically, you have enough income to live comfortably, for the rest of your life, without needing to work.

Let’s assume you are healthy.

What would you spend your time doing?

Give up work and do coaching instead
Sort out starting my local junior parkrun
Get super fit
See my parents more
Kon Mari the house
Plan fun activities with the children
Learn to swim properly
Read, read, read

It strikes me that most things (except perhaps the travel, and I'd be happy to do that on a budget too) on my list are pretty cheap.

If the house, bills and debts were covered, I really wouldn't need an awful lot more to make me happy. That's food for thought...

Toooldtobearsed2 · 28/06/2019 16:14

This is me, I dont work and never want to again😁

We paid off mortgage, got rid of the kids, and retired at 49 and 54 respectively.
I have dogs, chickens, goats and foster donkeys.... feck knows how I managed that, but i did. I currently have an alpaca, but she will be off to her forever home soon.

I guess I DO work, but its not work when it is something you truly love and give thanks for every minute of the day. Well, unless its pissing down with rain, then I am not so enthusiastic!
Been doing this for 9 years now, I am very, very lucky.

Butterbeeeen · 28/06/2019 16:16

I would travel the world with my family. I would homeschool as we travel. This is a little dream of mine if I was ever to come in to major money.

IVFNewbie · 28/06/2019 16:22

Go on real life antique road trips

InsertFunnyUsername · 28/06/2019 16:33

No chance i would work.

Without sounding cliché, but i would like to do some charity work, not so much volunteering but setting up fun days for the local kids, community BBQs that sort of stuff. All stuff i enjoy now but having limited funds and time make difficult, in between travelling, the 100 of dogs i would have and endless lunches/massages/Beauty treatments Blush

I'd invest in a business I think. A little bnb in the lakes or something

Far2go46 · 28/06/2019 20:45

You don't want to know Smile

Closertotheheart · 28/06/2019 20:46

I would travel lots and try to experience many different cultures. I would get a boat and spend time sailing. And I'd volunteer my time to worthy causes.

Mamabear12 · 28/06/2019 20:56

If I had unlimited money, I would buy a couple holiday homes. And fly there first class each time I wanted to go. I would also buy a big country house an hour drive from London. I would also take a two week holiday to the Maldives, bring along a nanny w the kids and put them up in a separate room so I can see kids when I want, but then have relaxation time or nap etc when I want. I currently don’t have to work, but spend my time doing tasks around the house, parental duties, taking care of dog, studying a course etc. I long for some more holidays, but only if I could travel first class each time (I hate flying!!!)

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 28/06/2019 20:59

Sewing, writing. painting, walking, playing music, learning new crafts i.e. woodwork; also spending more 'quality' time with DC (I spend lots of time with them but am often tired which means I'm not as fun/active as I'd like).
If I had a lot of income to spend on hobbies I'd do short courses i.e. pottery etc, and attend lots of lectures/talks. I suppose I'd probably end up with fun creative or DIY 'projects' that I'd focus on for a while.

Ooh and yes maybe get a dog!

AppleKatie · 28/06/2019 21:03

Give up work

Travel- but usually just for a week or so at a time no long stints. I might make an exception for New Zealand.

Teach myself to do more than just hack
desperately at my garden.

Go to the theatre min once a week

Volunteer more extensively with Girlguiding.

Cross stitch

Pay people to redecorate my house but spend hours making choices/changing my mind/doing that but again etc...

Read books

Cook more interesting meals

Grow some veg

Take long walks in the countryside

Bliss

Blueoasis · 28/06/2019 21:11

Volunteer - probably mostly with the elderly as they are often forgotten, but with animals too
Become a foster parent (would like to do this regardless rather than have my own children)
Ride my horse (and maybe sneak another one in Grin)
Travel
Learn to cook better (I'm trying with this but I'm not very good)

With enough money? I would get a second hand car, mod it for racing and go racing too Grin

Cailleach · 28/06/2019 21:32

I'd either be at the gym, or on my allotment, or walking in the countryside.

TowerRavenSeven · 28/06/2019 21:42

Following because I was just made redundant today. I worked part time but loved the hours. I guess I’m still in shock. Probably get something else though.
