To ask how you would spend your time if you had enough money not to need to work

PuzzledObserver · 27/06/2019 17:26

Let’s imagine you came into some money (doesn’t matter how, but legally), which put you in a position to pay off any debts and mortgage, buy a house outright if you don’t already own one, and provide you with a household income similar to what you currently have. Or more if you’re skint.

Basically, you have enough income to live comfortably, for the rest of your life, without needing to work.

Let’s assume you are healthy.

What would you spend your time doing?

I'd prob sleep for a few months! then re-organise and decorate my whole house, or sell it and buy a new one. If i was bored i may but more pets and do some volunteering.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/06/2019 10:42

Study
Write
Volunteer
I might work part time but in a different sort of job
Garden

I am hoping to be in this position in 5-8 years.

Eliza9919 · 28/06/2019 10:44

Move to Spain. A general day would be:

Get up around 7.30/8 when I naturally wake up.
Either of us do any housework that needs doing quickly.
Take the dogs for a walk.
Pick up stuff for dinner.
Have lunch.
Sit by the pool or on the beach or shop or read or watch tv/cinema etc with DP.
Either DP or I would cook dinner.
Go for another dog walk.

flirtygirl · 28/06/2019 10:56

Travel, read, practice my religion more, learn, help my family, do adhoc childcare for friends and family, get my daughters tutors and home ed.

All the things I do now except I would have more money, I could afford a tutor and I could travel more.

flirtygirl · 28/06/2019 10:57

I would not work for someone else if I didn't have to, ever.

If we are starving and I need to work then I will happily do so.

Not starving = no work.

flirtygirl · 28/06/2019 10:59

I'd also have more children and adopt. Maybe foster if the powers that be, let me.

NotBeingRobbed · 28/06/2019 11:02

Assuming kids are grown up and have left home/can cope alone....

Work one or two days a week freelance - so I can take long breaks if I wish.

Travel a lot, swim daily, tidy the house - get it into a decent state - then hire a cleaner to keep on top of it. Blog, watch films, read books, lunch with friends when home from travels. Get involved in some new project - not sure what yet.

Maybe buy a holiday home abroad and spend as much time there as possible!

Makegoodchoices · 28/06/2019 11:02

Travelling, studying and writing books in a chalet on a beach.

Charity work also, but not sure which charity yet. Probably something relating to supporting victims of domestic violence.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 28/06/2019 11:05

Hire a teacher and get my maths back to a level where I could do a Mechanical Engineering degree and then go back to university. Fun as computer science was and working in IT I'd like to get into something more practical.

Then I'd build a machine shop and spend my days tinkering, building things, automating the house etc.

NerdyBird · 28/06/2019 11:10

Right now, sleep!
I'd be able to do all school runs, take dd to activities or playdates, help her with school stuff. I could get more involved with school too.
Hopefully get more exercise! Keep on top of housework and admin and get the decorating done! House needs refreshing almost throughout.

As dd got older I'd probably look to volunteer elsewhere and maybe do a bit more hobby-wise for me.

I do currently only work 4 days but find that 9-3 once a week just isn't enough time for all those extras. I can just about keep things ticking over but that's it.

Willow2017 · 28/06/2019 11:34

If we are talking a life changing amount...
Buy a modest house with a big garden nearer Edinburgh.
Redecorate it and get all new furniture.
Go to theatre more.
Get a dog and take long walks in the countryside.
Take kids on short holidays to see all the heritage sites/ historical sites in UK we wanted to experience but haven't managed yet.
Take kids and myself off on a holiday abroad once or twice every year to somewhere interesting/historical/natural wonder. (With a pool for chill out days 😉)
Go back to Florida and see more than we managed to last time (our trip of a lifetime would no longer apply!) But we would go back to Universal for a couple of days😀
Volunteer at a charity.
Keep chickens rescue ones and rare breeds.
Grow our own fruit and veg in my big garden.
Finish my OU degree (had to stop at diploma level due to health issue)
Read more. Preferably in a nice coffee house with a pastry😀
Get back to riding lessons at a good stables that wasn't trying to get us all killed like last one!
Take kids to concerts.

Best of all phone work and tell them where to stick it and exactly why and never go back.😂😂

PinkGlitter123 · 28/06/2019 13:35

I think I would be bored out of my skull. I get bored easily and wouldn't know how to fill my days. There is only so much cooking, reading and box set watching you can do.
With that said, one of my dreams is to go to America for 6 months-a year so that and also travelling to countries like Italy and Australia

Ninkaninus · 28/06/2019 13:58

If I had endless money I’d never be bored. I’m bored out of my head most of the time at work. If I could choose what to fill my days with there’d be endless possibility for challenge, learning, discovery, adventure.

SlackerMum1 · 28/06/2019 14:03

I don’t really do crafting or domesticity so I’d still work as I love my job and get to do quite a lot of awesome stuff, but I’d happily cut a deal to take a massive pay cut so I didn’t have to do the distinctly not awesome bits... HR, admin, budgets... and also to be able to take extended periods of leave so I could travel to far flung places...

Ninkaninus · 28/06/2019 14:06

I’d work, for sure. I’d choose what I want to work at, though. Work comes in many guises, employment is only one of those.

YouJustDoYou · 28/06/2019 14:10

Live in my favourite country selling from there, rather than currently having to import and sell.

growlingbear · 28/06/2019 14:16

First thing 'd do is book into a health farm boot camp for two months to lose 2 stone, then I'd book a personal trainer for three times a week to make sure I stayed that way.
I'd travel and travel and travel to China, India, Costa Rica, Japan, USA, Central Europe- with DH and DC as often as they were prepared to join me. I'd visit friends who live far away.

I'd book a piano lesson a day until I was competent and I'd go out kayaking and sailing. I'd go on a writing retreat and write a book.

I could blissfully fill all my time without work if there was enough money to do so.

hazell42 · 28/06/2019 15:04

I study
I write (and get paid so strictly speaking working, but I love it)
I go walking every morning
I go on trekking holidays
I visit friends
Friends visit me
I go to the cinema
I no longer need to work, but I get up at 5.15 every day so that i can cram it all in. I have only just stopped working after 35 years of grafting. I am not at all bored and while I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination, I have enough to meet my needs for the foreseeable future
I don't need more and life is too short to do things you no longer enjoy

Zbag · 28/06/2019 15:08

I'd be stoned and drunk a lot.
Probably best that I do have to go to work then really

BlooperReel · 28/06/2019 15:11

Where to start!

Enjoy being able to do the school run, it's a novelty for me!
Do driving lessons and pass my test.
Have holidays during all the school holidays to all the places we would love to visit.
Put money aside for higher education for the DC.
Work on the garden, and make it lovely Grin
Write
Go to the gym

Animum2 · 28/06/2019 15:29

I would like to run some sort of animal sanctuary if I had the money, maybe with a few self catering guest houses so volunteers could come and stay

TantricTwist · 28/06/2019 15:45

I would buy a house with a pool and swim daily.

I would hire a Personal trainer, yoga instructor etc to keep me fit etc.
I would have a chauffeur service and drive all around the UK and stay in Towns, city's and villages I've never been to before.
I would travel a lot abroad and always the best class and / or hire private planes to do so.
I would shop for the most luxurious clothes and best beauty products
I would have a cook and a cleaner.
I would go skiing every year.
I would hire out a gorgeous stately home (maybe having bought my own) each year and have a huge party so everyone I know gets to have the brilliant time.
I would start a business that interests me, getting someone else to manage it but I would oversee it from afar.
I would get my hair done properly, make up done by a professional when going out, weekly facial and massage.
I would keep from being bored quite easily.

Cath2907 · 28/06/2019 15:48

I'd take my kid to school every day and pick her up. We'd go away in the caravan far more as I'd have more time to get ready / plan. I'd walk the dog more. The house would always be clean and tidy. I'd read for an hour a day. We'd eat all home cooked food. Basically I think I could happily fill my day just pottering. I'm in my 40s and have worked for the last 20 years. Retirement sounds nice now!

MollyHuaCha · 28/06/2019 15:51

I would spend my days training horses and doing yoga.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 28/06/2019 15:59

I kid myself that I'd still work a bit, but tbh I wouldn't. Maybe I'd pick up the odd bit of marking to help my old colleagues out...

I'd...

Travel a lot; there are so many places I'd still love to visit
Sort the house out - it's a mess
Teach myself to bake cakes that can't also be used as novelty handweights
Keep chickens, bees and potter endlessly in the garden
Spend a lot of time in said garden also doing absolutely bugger-all with a book and a cup of coffee
Draw and paint the pretty things in above garden
Get a big daft dog and go for long walks
Have friends to stay for the weekend often, and cook them huge breakfasts and have long, boozy lunches/dinners
Have a lot of afternoon sex and a lot of naps

God, I'd be so happy Grin
