Neighbours security lighting (Alcatraz style!)

MaggieKing · 26/06/2019 20:17

Neighbour has security light.

  1. The brightest you can buy
  2. Angled so it aims into our relaxed rear garden, so blinding, its brighter than a new cars headlights
  3. Flicks on and off....all day.... and all night, so it disturbs you when you are in the house as well in the garden.

Ive asked if something can be done, apparently...nothing can be done.

Lets not talk about the plastic topiary. Jeeez.

Bearing in mind ive asked very nicely if something can be done and told 'no' what should i do?

Pellet gun accident, catapult accident, stray dart, drone strike!

SpanglyPop · 26/06/2019 21:54

What's a relaxed rear garden? YABU

codemonkey · 26/06/2019 22:04

Dunno. Complain to the council? If they cap streetlights to prevent them shining into bedrooms then you'd have thought they might be able to pursue this for you. It would drive me demented, OP.

HappyHammy · 26/06/2019 22:07

Maybe local environmental health.

Definitely contact your LA. They'll assess whether it constitutes a statutory nuisance. Google 'neighbour intrusive security light'. Loads about it online.

codemonkey · 26/06/2019 22:10

Omg. That link's made me read about missing missy again Grin

StillRunningWithScissors · 26/06/2019 22:16

@familycourtq brilliant

www.gov.uk/guidance/artificial-light-nuisances-how-councils-deal-with-complaints

There's some useful information here. Have the council deemed that it's not a statutory nuisance?

RighteousSista · 27/06/2019 05:22

We had similar. We used to pop out into the garden frequently ( as we do!) to have a cigarette or to empty the compost caddy, recycling bin, let the dog out etc. One day the light actually 'blew ' from all the prolonged activity - never to be replaced. Get some children round & make it into a game. They'll get the message ! 😈

MaggieKing · 27/06/2019 20:22

Relaxed, meaning my garden has very subtle , very dim lighting, and lots of plants. Alas they are the ones with the kids.....

Alas light is super bright LED....so its gonna take many years to blow...

The council/legal process have prevented most people from complaining about your neighbours....by making it a legal requirement you declare it when you try and sell...So bad neighbours get to stay bad neighbours as no one can complain. Great idea. Why dont they just(council/law) deal with the problem!

So i think basically you have to put up with disrepectful, cheap neighbours....

Enhance your garden with some strategically placed mirrors, edged with plants and ensure that they reflect the lights into the neighbours windows.

Some examples here www.google.com/search?q=garden+mirrors&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiVu9LStorjAhUCNhoKHZmTDKIQ_AUIESgC&biw=1242&bih=597

hazandduck · 27/06/2019 20:48

Ah OP our neighbour has this...it shines in to our bedroom 😩

Breathlessness · 27/06/2019 20:51

Dress in all black and try to get past without setting it off Mission Impossible stylee.

Ontheboardwalk · 27/06/2019 20:54

Oh I like the idea of mirrors in your garden

TheZazous · 27/06/2019 20:57

We had this with neighbour across the road, shining directly into ds bedroom. When we mentioned it to them they did change the position and strength of the lighting, all ok now 👍

TheZazous · 27/06/2019 20:58

And no yanbu.

Babdoc · 27/06/2019 21:03

Phone them every time it comes on in the middle of the night. “Your security light has just come on, thought I’d better tell you in case you’ve got burglars”.
Repeat hourly all night if necessary!
And yes, definitely garden mirrors to bounce it back into their bedroom window.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 27/06/2019 21:03

Get one yourself

Sammy867 · 27/06/2019 21:03

I would buy a similar one and point it at theirs. When they complain advise you will take yours down if they take theirs down.

PollyEsterblouse · 27/06/2019 21:05

The mirror idea is brilliant. Mirrors can look really good in pretty gardens. Maggie, would mirrored disco balls fit the look of your garden? One or two between you and the light would reflect it back to the neighbours at dozens of dazzling angles.

Meyoumeanmeh · 27/06/2019 21:07

Oooh yes, mirrors!

RosaWaiting · 27/06/2019 21:08

OP if I found a place I was buying had a complaint like this, it wouldn't make a difference. Any viewers are likely to see the security lights anyway.

so I would talk to them and ask them to see if they can angle them differently, time them differently etc etc.

Or complain via council. It must be very annoying. I used to long for a garden but increasingly bonkers behaviour means I think about it a lot less now!
