To have lied

About my neighbours?

Neighbours rent their house. It's just three houses on a small lane.

Have spoken to them a few times, friendly enough just seem like a nice couple with a few young children.

I was in my garden today whilst they were at work and the letting agent came to do an inspection at their house.

When he came out he asked me if I knew whether the neighbours have a dog or not (I'm assuming they aren't allowed by their contract?).

Now I know for a fact that they do have a dog but I just said that I didn't think so, not to my knowledge.

AIBU to think this just isn't any of my business? As far as I am concerned they are nice people and good neighbours, I have no interest whatsoever in 'snitching' on them.

I was sure about it until my mother came round later and said she'd have told them as it isn't fair on the landlord. Fwiw, I don't know the landlord from Adam, they have never lived in the house so far as I know.

I understand it's their house (the LL) but I just don't want to get involved!

I agree with you, it would feel like snitching to me.

Lweji · 26/06/2019 17:41

I think I'd just answer that they're good neighbours (or not, as the case may be).

Or ask the agent back why they're asking you. And tell ĺthem to do the inspection themselves.

wifesupremacist · 26/06/2019 17:41

YANBU in the slightest

Pinkfinkle · 26/06/2019 17:43

YANBU at all.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 26/06/2019 17:44

YANBU at all. The letting agent has no right questioning neighbours about residents unless a problem has been raised.

LL83 · 26/06/2019 17:44

Yanbu. I would have done the same. If LL cant even tell there is a dog there then it obviously isn't doing any harm to his property.

LoafofSellotape · 26/06/2019 17:45

YANBU he shouldn't have asked you.

Whathappenedtooursummer · 26/06/2019 17:46

My ddog adds added security therefore protecting my ll's property!!
And he got an extra £100 deposit for each ddog!!
Angry

ItsAllNaff · 26/06/2019 17:47

That's what I thought! Surely it isn't on that he even asked.

I wouldn't think it's okay to possibly affect the opinions of neighbours for the tenants.

Not that it has affected my opinion of them at all because I really don't care but I feel like I know their business now which feels off really!

YANBU. I would have done the same. I don’t watch to snitch on my nice neighbours.

IsabellaLinton · 26/06/2019 17:48

Don’t want to, that should say!

Whathappenedtooursummer · 26/06/2019 17:49

Maybe they were just checking if the ddog was a nuisance? Barking issues or poo?

Tolleshunt · 26/06/2019 17:51

I’d have done the same, OP. Why would you grass up nice neighbours? There’s no obligation on you to report anything. I would tip them off that you were asked, too.

ItsAllNaff · 26/06/2019 17:51

I don't think so whathappened, the question was

'do you know if they have a dog at all?'

Even if he did mean is it a nuisance, I wouldn't have wanted to answer that question as it sounded like he didn't know whether they did or not.

OP posts:
Aquamarine1029 · 26/06/2019 17:59

I wouldn't have lied, but I would have said their personal affairs are none of my business and it is inappropriate for them to be quizzing their neighbours.

cantfindname · 26/06/2019 18:19

I would tell your neighbours that he has been asking! Better that they are prepared.

Rather sneaky way of checking up on the tenants.

lilpumpsmum · 26/06/2019 18:21

Was the dog bed and bowls not a give away?! Grin

I had to pay an extra £1000 security deposit for my DDog, jealous of the PP who just had to pay an extr 1000

RhiWrites · 26/06/2019 18:21

“no idea” might have been better but I voted YANBU and I rent out a property (on behalf of my aunt). Asking neighbours to spy on my tenants is sleazy.

RhiWrites · 26/06/2019 18:21

Oh and as of this month you can’t ask for extra security deposits for pets!

pictish · 26/06/2019 18:23

I would have said much the same.

PreseaCombatir · 26/06/2019 18:26

I would have done the same.
I’d also mention it to the neighbour that they were sniffing around tbh.

Idontwanttotalk · 26/06/2019 18:39

Why would he even ask if they have a dog?He must have seen something to make him think they have or maybe the place smells of dog.

If you really didn't want to answer then you should have told him other people's lives are not your business. Why be a liar?

A thought - if your NDNs disregard this rule they might disregard others. You may even end up with the neighbours from hell when you get to know them. You never know when you need the LL on your side.

CountArthursgroupie · 26/06/2019 18:47

I agree with LL83. If the (hypothetical!) dog can't be detected, where's the harm?

ShowMeTheKittens · 26/06/2019 18:49

I'd lie too. I think it's a bit crap people are not allowed pets tbh. They had a cat downstairs and although they smoked weed all day, I would not have snitched.... cos I loved the cat. Ok. Also it's mean to snitch.
Anyhow, they have been evicted possibly. And I miss the cat and their little boy too.

redcarbluecar · 26/06/2019 18:50

I’d have done the same, but would probably mention it to the neighbours.
