To ask for help with a bloody vacuum?!

So went from the very loved but much too big for our small house Henry Hoover to the cordless Shark DuoClean vacuum. (loved the Henry but vacuuming the house with it was like an Olympic event with its weight and size and constant tumbling over and having to go back and pick it up and so on)

And God am I disappointed! Apart from fine dust this doesn't pick up anything unless you clean the whole thing out 3 times a day and even then it barely does anything! Hmm

We have 2 DCs, DDog and 2 of us in a small 2 bed terrace so stuff gets trodden into the house daily and often needs a good vacuum.
I wanted cordless to be able to whip around the place but I'm happy to settle for a not too heavy corded vacuum with a good powerful suction that works on hard floors and carpets.
I'm looking online but a bit dubious as the Shark I have now has over 1000 4+ star reviews on Amazon and I am Shock considering how awful I've found it despite having a replacement because I thought the original was faulty.
So I thought that I'd pop on here so the wise mumsnetters can point me in the right direction.

Budget under £200 preferably around the £100 mark but don't mind paying a bit extra for the right thing.

So can please someone save me from looking at my filthy carpets and chucking the Shark in the skip and recommend a good vacuum?

Dyson. We still have our 2004 Dyson that due to it's age gets a free service and replacement parts every year. It still works like new. It is heavy but they have some much lighter models now.

EKGEMS · 26/06/2019 15:15

I have two dogs a cat and two males in the house plus me and the corded shark is awesome I'm on my second one but my SIL swore by her Dyson. I vacuum daily with hardwood floods it's like a hair magnet!

sadkoala · 26/06/2019 16:28

Are you talking about the shark liftaway? I've been looking at it recently.

I’ve got the shark cordless and love it. It’s great on thicker pile carpets but nit so great on flatter ones. It is a 2nd vaccum though. For my main one I have a Sebo. It’s amazing, unfortunately EU rules state no vacuum csn be over 900 watts now so I’m really looking after mine which is much more powerful than 900watt!

roses2 · 26/06/2019 16:52

Sorry but there is no comparison in suction between cordless and corded. Corded is far superior and no cordless will ever compare. The power is too little.

MindDisco · 26/06/2019 16:53

Miele cat and dog. Bought mine about 4 years ago and it came with a 10 year warranty. The suction is like no hoover I’ve had before. Think so it’s the S6000 model or something. It’s bagged and I think that makes a huge difference to the power and the bags aren’t expensive for how often they need replacing.

PickAChew · 26/06/2019 16:54

I'd suggest the miele c1 but it's no good on carpets. Excellent on hard floors, though.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 26/06/2019 16:54

IMO any model of Miele will be better than any Dyson

WouldHAVEcouldHAVEshouldHAVE · 26/06/2019 16:56

benjib My much loved first Sebo died a death and I got a new one. I’m always saying to DH that it’s not as powerful as the last one. He thinks I’m imagining it.

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 26/06/2019 16:56

I have the corded shark rocket which is excellent imo, how long have you had yours? Do you regularly wash out all of the filters? Is the front roller free from hair/fur? (If it's clogged up it won't work properly)

theydontknowweknow · 26/06/2019 16:58

We've got a Vax air stretch, it's corded but the suction is great and has different strengths for different pile carpets, has a piece that you clip on the bottom for hard floors and it's not heavy (after carrying up and down our 3 story house). Think it was around £100 from Argos!

TwoPupsAndaHamster · 26/06/2019 17:07

I loved my Shark. Unfortunately, when it conked out, DH went and bought a Dyson cordless. The worst cleaner ever!

I was looking at the Gtech. Does anyone have one? It seems Miele is the MN choice. Decisions, decisions...

Don't get a Dyson cordless! I loved my corded Dyson. The cordless is nothing like a decent Hoover ☹

PrayingandHoping · 26/06/2019 17:15

I have a Shark Cordless and it's amazing! They are raves about on all the dog fb pages I'm on....

Gertie75 · 26/06/2019 17:21

I've got the corded and it's great, much better than the previous Dysons, I spent ages researching various ones beforehand and corded won every time on suction power.

Have you got it set to carpet not hard floor? If mine ever starts leaving fluff behind it's because I've accidentally switched it to hard floor setting.

funnelfanjo · 26/06/2019 17:21

I love our cordless Dyson, even DH will do the vacuuming with it. It’s fine for all our every day cleaning, even though it was bought to deal with quick clean ups/spills. It was a special edition “fluffy” and came with different heads for hard floors and carpets, and it really makes a difference using the right head.

Our corded cleaner now only gets pulled out for cleaning our spare room as the horrible nylon thin carpet clings onto dust and hair like nothing I’ve ever encountered. It’s the only place where we need the extra few Watts of power you get with a corded cleaner.

Looobyloo · 26/06/2019 17:25

Sebo. We've had ours for years and it's brilliant!

Looobyloo · 26/06/2019 17:28

If you're after another cordless one I'd say Gtech are the best I've found. I work as a cleaner so have used many.
I would never buy a Dyson, cord or cordless.

sadkoala · 26/06/2019 17:44

@1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor I do clean all the filters, brushes, brush roll etc regularly but it's such a faff! And it only lasts a short while before it just starts spitting stuff back out rather than sucking it up!

It's allright for little bits off fluff but as soon as there's actual dirt and mess to hoover up its useless I might as well pick it all up by hand!

I hate the fact it needs so much maintenance to bloody work my old Henry never needed so much faff and time spent on it for it to actually fulfill its function.

Shark liftaway is great. No issues with it. Have had countless Dysons in the past.

ThePhoenixRises · 26/06/2019 18:24

Shark lift away 100%

I had a shark duo and loved it

DH hated it

We now have the lift away and both love it

SkintAsASkintThing · 26/06/2019 18:27

Contact shark. Their customer service is extremely good. Yours could be faulty.

BummyKnocker · 26/06/2019 18:32

We have a Gtech for quick tidy ups and Miele Jnr for a proper clean into the corners etc, I'm very happy with both.

I'd like a powerful cordless to replace the Miele more because we lack the space but you can't go right up to the skirting can you?

Frankola · 26/06/2019 20:52

I have the corded shark pet duo with the liftwaway and I absolutely love it. You defo need to keep the filters tip top though

northernstars · 26/06/2019 21:06

We've gone through 2 Dyson cordless and wouldn't buy again. We're in a 3 storey house and use the corded Dyson for the top floor carpets. It's too heavy for me lifting and doing the stairs so I just bought the Miele C1 - corded, small and portable - happy so far.

cheeseandcrackers · 26/06/2019 21:08

I love my cordless Dysom V6. Never thought I could love a vacuum cleaner...
