Feel like crying as just got a glass stuck in my favourite mug

I was just filling the dishwasher when I realised someone left a glass in the kitchen sink on top of my favourite mug. It is now completely wedged inside the mug with about an inch of the glass sticking out of the top of it. I wouldn't normally be upset but I've had this particular mug for years and I always have my first morning tea in it! Has anyone any tips on getting the glass out of the mug without breaking the mug, I don't mind breaking the glass as it's not sentimental.

warm/hot water. soak them both for a couple of minutes. Give a little jiggle/twist and the glass should come out.

BouleBaker · 25/06/2019 23:42

Iced water in the glass, hot water around the cup is your best bet. If all else fails put the whole thing on its side and carefully smash the glass with a hammer.

MitziK · 25/06/2019 23:44

Sit the mug in hot water. Fill the glass with cold. Wait a few minutes and the glass should be cold enough to come out.

OR, if that fails.

Sit the mug and glass in boiling water for five minutes. Wearing gloves, carefully tip the water out and VERY carefully pour cold water into the glass. Glass shatters, mug is unharmed.

Saracen · 25/06/2019 23:45

Heat the mug but not the glass. the mug will expand slightly and you can pull the glass out. You could do this by standing the mug in a basin of hot water for a few minutes. Hold onto the glass while you do this so it won't just slide deeper into the expanded mug.

I suppose you could also fill the glass with cool water to make it contract, but that probably isn't necessary and might break the glass.

FreezerBird · 25/06/2019 23:45

Put the mug into a bowl of hot/warm water, and pour cold water into the glass.

In theory - the warm water makes the mug expand slightly, and the cold water makes the glass contract slightly, then they should come apart.

Obviously the greater the difference in temperature the greater the effect but I'd go carefully as you're wanting to preserve the mug!

MauisHouseOnMaui · 25/06/2019 23:46

Tap the sides of it against the edge of the counter top to break the seal and it should dislodge.

If that doesn't work then fill the glass with ice and stand the mug in a dish of hot water then wait 5-10 minutes, the temperate difference will make the mug expand and the glass contract so they'll pull apart.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/06/2019 23:46

Everyone has mentioned the hot/cold water thing so alternatively, if dry you could use talc as a lubricant between the glass and mug.

ThePhoenixRises · 25/06/2019 23:55

Neat washing up liquid, treat it how you would, if you had a ring stuck on your finger.

Butterfly98 · 26/06/2019 00:01

Thanks for all the replies, I've tried the hot and cold water, no joy I'm afraid the glass is firmly stuck 😢 the mug is now in a saucepan of boiling water with ice in the glass but not budging. I would try the hammer on the glass but it's locked in my garage right now so I will definitely have to try it in the morning, let's hope I have an accurate shot!

Try WD40 sprayed round the rim of the glass.

LauderSyme · 26/06/2019 00:16

I once accidentally broke a heavy glass jug by letting boiling water sit in it for a few minutes. After it was emptied I immediately ran it under the cold tap and it cracked apart under the pressure. Maybe you could try this with your wedged glass?

Am a little bit scared it would break your mug too but hopefully not if the water only touched the glass?

AlunWynsKnee · 26/06/2019 00:20

Put it in a bowl of soapy water and then use rubber gloves to wiggle the glass free.

Butterfly98 · 26/06/2019 00:29

Didn't have any wd40 to hand so sprayed some cooking oil on but to no avail. Then I tried the neat washing up liquid but the glass is so tightly jammed the liquid stayed all around the rim and couldn't seep down the side of the glass at all. It's looking like it will be a hammer job now, I'm sure my neighbours will give me funny looks if they see me coming out of my garage and carrying a hammer 🔨 into the house at 7am 😂😂

I cried when I couldn't find a bobble once! I was very poorly but still 😂

YANBU! I hope you fix it

Loulouuz · 26/06/2019 00:37

What MauisHouseOnMaui said.

Gently tap the sides on the worktop and try to pull apart as you do it.

At work the glasses regularly wedge together when they've been stacked hot out the washer. That's the method that works without fail! Might take a few goes but just gently

ZebrasAreBras · 26/06/2019 00:42

OP - I have a mug, that cost 99p, must be over 30 years old now. I got it in my teens, and I'm 48 now. It has a (now faded) pic of a hippo on it, and I love it so much. It survived sixth form, university, and everything since (and I have 3 children now!). I'd cry if that got broken.

Hope you get it out!

Butterfly98 · 26/06/2019 00:52

Yes @ZebrasAreBras similar story my mug has been with me through thick and thin and I really don't want to lose it now, it has become priceless to me!

I sometimes find that putting Marigolds on my hands helps with turning things. If you dry the inside of the glass but have some form of oil on the bit where the glass and mug meet you might be able to slowly twist the glass upwards and out of the mug

Butterfly98 · 26/06/2019 23:00

Didn't get time to update you until now but I managed to salvage the mug without any damage thankfully! As advised by @BouleBaker I tapped the top of the glass gently with a small hammer, it split into 3 parts quite quickly so problem was finally solved. Thanks again though for all the tips Smile

Good news Butterfly Smile

BouleBaker · 27/06/2019 05:21

Glad your mug is safe!

Paddingtonlikesmarmalade · 27/06/2019 05:33

Enjoy your morning cuppa!

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/06/2019 05:44

I love a happy ending! Grin

honeygirlz · 27/06/2019 05:51

Sounds like you need to hide the mug from others! Glad all’s we’ll that ends well!

RedForShort · 27/06/2019 05:57

If this horror ever occurs again put them both in the freezer (well obviously you'd have no choice to put them both in as they are stuck together).

Both contract slightly so loosening the grip.
