To close my bank account over this?

Am with Santander. They want all customers to download a banking app and use that in future. Their app is not compatible with a desktop pc.

I don’t want to access my bank accounts by phone.my phone is ancient and I have a pc.

Can anyone recommend a bank? I need to access my accounts via computer, not app.

Honestly.

I'm with Santander, and have seen none of this. When I log on, on the Macbook, a window comes up sometimes, offering me Santander antivirus software, or something. I just ignore it. Haven't any of this "go buy a smartphone" palaver

Snidpan · 28/06/2019 17:38

OP, I love the way you finish a post with a little 'harrumph'.
Such as "honestly." "FFS." and "Great."

Snidpan · 28/06/2019 17:38

Could you end a post with "I ask you", just for me please?

This country.

@Lamaha

Sorry, I meant a bank sms system, not a phone

Lots of banks moved away from the card reader / 2 factor token as they were expensive & batteries didn't last as long as they thought

Surfingtheweb · 28/06/2019 17:44

NatWest online banking is good, you enter your customer number, your pin & password, they have a card reader that works with the site for extra security for setting up new payees, stuff like that, can't see them needing to link to the app anytime soon. They are a good bank too.

More likely it was just another faff having to carry it around with you ... if you have a phone anyway you may as well use that.

scaryteacher · 28/06/2019 19:01

haribo I rang Lloyds yesterday to query this, and the bloke who answered said that no UK banks do card readers. I begged to differ on the basis of this thread and was told that is how it is. Thus, when I am buying my way through the Kindle monthly deals for 0.99p each, the bank will have to phone each and every time I buy a book.

I will just put everything on my credit card for online shopping and then pay that off monthly, and avoid the bank.

Not everyone has a phone anyway, or not one they can download an app to.

It's a ploy to stop people shopping online and force them back to the high street, when they don't have to identify themselves when shopping.

HeddaGarbled · 28/06/2019 19:07

NatWest definitely do provide card readers. I’ve got one and have used it within the last 3 months.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/06/2019 19:17

No, NatWest are a dreadful bank. Massively incompetent. But Barclays are a million times worse. I've worked in the banking industry for many years and some of the things I know about Barclays are truly shocking. Wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

However Nationwide and First Direct are very good and definitely deserve their excellent reputations.

scaryteacher · 28/06/2019 19:27

hedda I believe you; the bloke at Lloyds was v emphatic that this wasn't the case however!

ny20005 · 28/06/2019 19:52

@scaryteacher Lloyd's business customers have card readers ....

The same rules apply to credit card purchases

UnicornRun · 28/06/2019 20:45

@HundredMilesAnHour me too! Used to work for Barclays I could tell some shocking stories. Now work for Nationwide, absolutely beautiful company!

HeddaGarbled · 28/06/2019 20:51

Disagree about Barclays too. Our local branch have been totally brilliant with my elderly mum and some difficulties she has been having.

This is already a thing in some European countries. My housemate can only access his banking for the account he holds in his home country from an app, there is no way to do so via the web. He has a minor coronary every time he things his phone is lost or broken..

roses2 · 28/06/2019 23:06

It's a regulatory change coming in September, all banks will be following out something similar. It's to improve authentication.

scaryteacher · 28/06/2019 23:43

ny I'm a non business customer. Perhaps the bloke on the phone didn't know that.

My credit card company have not yet told me that I will have to do this for online purchases...and perhaps people will switch to Paypal. Will the bank have to phone you every time for that if your debit card is linked to your paypal account?

starfishmummy · 28/06/2019 23:54

I'm with Santander. I don't do any online banking at all so I haven't heard of this.

Topseyt · 29/06/2019 04:04

All banks are going down the route of increased security. They have to, unless you are happy for fraudsters to gain easier access to your funds. Closing your account in a huff will make no difference.

Nobody is saying that you have to use a phone app. You've totally misinterpreted it. It is simply an additional layer of security.

Topseyt · 29/06/2019 04:17

Ancient phones are all very well, but as security for online banking, which is increasingly necessary these days, they are all but useless, I'm afraid.

If I make significant changes to my account then Nationwide send me a text confirming it, so that I could respond if it wasn't me

Banking via the website is not being done away with. Extra security is being added. Quite frankly, you'd have more cause for complaint if they weren't doing that and fraudsters emptied your accounts.

RingtheBells · 29/06/2019 04:35

My John Lewis credit card did start sending me 6 figure codes to my phone when I bought something from my desktop a few months ago, it was just for a couple of weeks and haven't had one recently, but I did think then that this would be a pain if there was no mobile signal and I had to get a code from the landline each time.

Interesting to see what places like Amazon do come September as you don't even need the 3 digits on back of card to shop with them, I use a separate credit card with Amazon (also same one for PayPal) as don't like the idea of my bank card being on there but I think credit cards are going to have to use the same rules in September.

ForalltheSaints · 29/06/2019 07:06

Check whether this is really the case. How near a branch is may also be a thought in any decision you make.

DGRossetti · 29/06/2019 08:40

They do for the first purchase - then they (sort of) store it. Cardholder Not Present transactions without a CV2 are now at the merchants risk.

snidpan - do I? I hadn’t realised! But thanks for pointing it out...
