State teacher in Glastonbury bender?

Windermerewanderer · 25/06/2019 20:20

Aibu to think that a head of department in a large state secondary school (of a core subject - English/maths/science) is a CF for taking two days off school to go to Glastonbury?

The school fines parents who take kids out of school for holiday.

Not the first year this has happened.

Money too short for laminating and photocopying but not for two days of cover.

OP says teacher is being paid (how do you know, OP, are the cover manager/HR?) I cannot imagine anyone being paid for Glastonbury. I was allowed a day for my God mother's funeral, but I wouldn't expect more.

BlueSkiesLies · 25/06/2019 20:57

Oh fuck off, the school doesn't make the fining rules. If the teacher has had leave OK'd then that is their business.

TheFormidableMrsC · 25/06/2019 20:57

What business is it of yours? You sound deranged! I am sure he has cleared this with his employers. Are teachers not allowed any time off? I am SO grateful to my son's teachers, I KNOW how long their hours are, that it doesn't stop on evenings and weekends, that they lesson plan, mark homework and pay for so very much out of their own pocket (including breakfasts for kids who have none), how unappreciated they are. What a horrible post. What are you going to do OP? Who are you going to complain to?

MustardScreams · 25/06/2019 20:58

Oh as if you know all this, you’re just bullshitting to make your point seem less ridiculous.

It’s nothing to do with you. Find a hobby or something instead of moaning about what people do with their time.

Lifeover · 25/06/2019 20:59

Meh who cares? Fuck all happens in these last few weeks. Hope they have a great time.

missbattenburg · 25/06/2019 20:59

I'd be gobsmacked if he was simply allowed to 'book' 2 days off every year for Glastonbury

Me too. Glastonbury is only every other year :)

OP: YABU. Unless you are this person's employer, it's none of your buiness.

Sundancer77 · 25/06/2019 21:01

God, some parents (not sure if that’s what you are) really feel they own teachers. How can you know the ins and out of all this? Isn’t it personal?

MotherOfDragonite · 25/06/2019 21:01

You're being completely unreasonable. When this teacher takes leave, and whether it is paid leave, is entirely between him and his employer.

It's not in the least bit comparable to school children not being able to take term-time holidays, which is a completely separate and different issue.

Smellbowpenisbeaker · 25/06/2019 21:01

I did this for a festival once. My DH was playing there and it was our last one before our first baby. I had to write to the governors for permission, take it unpaid, arrange cover and plan and resource the sessions. It was the most grovelling I ever had to do and I’d had zero sickness etc. End of term so most stuff tied up. I don’t think it was too cheeky to be honest but then I also don’t agree with fines for student holidays.

Bumper1969 · 25/06/2019 21:04

I'm a teacher. Never got time of on lieu of residential trips or other time. I had colleagues ring in sick for festivals and I disagree with it.

Other teachers have to cover. It's a lie. In twenty years teaching the only time I've known people to get time off for is their own wedding or very close funerals.

ElectricLions · 25/06/2019 21:04

He must be a valued teacher and I say good on him.

I have taken my children out of school and not be fined. It only kicks in if they have 5 days off.

Next you'll be complaining that someone had the audacity to take parental leave when their child was born.

I wouldn't want to be a secondary school teacher for a million pounds. It is a thankless job, as proven by you OP.

Barbie222 · 25/06/2019 21:05

I really doubt you've heard the full story here. Do you also work in the school and haven't been able to get time off? If so, refer to the burgundy book / absence policy with your line manager? Other people's leave is none of your business.

ChristmasInJuly · 25/06/2019 21:07

Ah that’s interesting codemonkey.
I’m just glad I’m out of there now!

ChristmasInJuly · 25/06/2019 21:09

SashaStark Your new school sounds wonderful!

maddy68 · 25/06/2019 21:09

Might be part time , or have attended courses in the holidays do had days on lieu. You really sound very bitter

DuchessSybilVimes · 25/06/2019 21:11

Wowser, wish any of the schools I worked in were that kind. Moving house you could take a day unpaid, ditto a child or partner's graduation, or a close family member's funeral. That's it.

Riverside85 · 25/06/2019 21:12

missbattenburg Glastonbury is not every other year. It has a “fallow year” approximately every 5 years (for example it was on 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, a rest in 2018 and back on this year 2019.

Witchofzog · 25/06/2019 21:13

Absolutely none of your business. Stop with the pearl clutching

pictish · 25/06/2019 21:14

I think nothing about it. It’s fine with me.

PlatypusPie · 25/06/2019 21:15

Trying out your skills as a tabloid headline writer, OP ? Easier to go straight to the paper with your juicy nugget than do a teaser on here.

AguerosAngel · 25/06/2019 21:15

One of my BF’s is a teacher, and yes they’re going to Glastonbury and yes I imagine they’ll be getting smashed like every other year that we’ve been with them (we’re not going this year, other holidays to pay for).

They don’t get paid while they’re off outside school holidays, no problem.

DareDevil223 · 25/06/2019 21:16

Jesus, what the fuck is with all these goady anti-teacher threads? As if they don't have enough shit to put up with.

Booboosweet · 25/06/2019 21:17

In Ireland teachers are allowed up to 5 personal days a year to be taken for whatever reason. They are paid. You just have to email the BOM in advance and name the date. It's no big deal. People use them for weddings etc... but a guy I know took two days for a sports tournament this year.

superram · 25/06/2019 21:19

My headteacher let me have the last day of term off this year so I could fly to America for a friends 40th. I have given up much more or my own time doing revision and field trip. I wouldn’t ask every year but as a one off it’s give and take.

BelindasGleeTeam · 25/06/2019 21:20

I'm part time.

I worked extra days earlier in the year.

Instead of taking the pay, I'm taking them as TOIL. There's far less cover now Yr13 and 11 have gone and SLT are fine. We have cover supervisors full time so by not bring paid and taking TOIL I'm actually saving the school money 😁

I may now use those days to go and get wasted at a music festival. Great idea.
