About washing machine repair?

Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 07:52

I have repair cover on my washing machine. A couple of weeks ago it started to make a loud squeaky noise whilst spinning. So I booked a visit in, today was first available slot.

On Friday I tried to use machine and it wasn't spinning. I contacted the company to report this issue (with the intention that they would update the booking and ensure the necessary part was available when someone came out).

You've guessed it. When the bloke turned up he had no idea and the part will take 7 days to obtain. During that time I will have to wash everything by hand (which I've already spent all weekend doing).

Not only that but he told me as there is 'not enough space' to repair the machine where it is I need to move it myself into my living room 12ft away.

When I said I cant physically move it myself he said couldn't my partner do it (don't have one) or my parents/ siblings (both dead thanks and I'm an only child). Bottom line was he won't move it so I have to. Wtf?

AIBU to think this is pretty fucking poor service?

YANBU but this is why I never take out this kind of cover - it's always shite.

familycourtq · 25/06/2019 08:08

Not much help now, but my plan is save the amount the premium would cost myself and then use the cash to pay for repair/replacement when it happens.

Celebelly · 25/06/2019 08:10

Yeah this kind of cover is inevitably shite and a money grab. Better to save the money and get a local independent repairer out. Not much use for you now but one for the future!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/06/2019 08:11

Yeh crap service! - turn the water off and pull it out, you may be able to drag it yourself.
Do you need to hand wash your clothes, any friends near by you can use their machine or pop along to a laundrette?

Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 08:12

I've had the machine for 5 years and had a number of call outs but never been told to move it myself before.

I can't afford to replace it.

There's no one whose washing machine I can use. No local friends that I know well enough, no family. No partner. I will have to try and find a launderette but no idea where one is or even if there is one.

I have myself and 2 DC. I normally do a minimum of 1 wash every day so I already have a huge washing mountain as I've only been able to do a few things by hand.

I physically can't move it. I have tried. Even if I could I'd be dragging it along the floor (Which is wood) scratching it to pieces. But I can't even move it from under the worktop.

Put a post on your local community FB page to see if anyone can come shift it for you for a tenner or something.

Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 08:38

Not really sure anyone would be willing to do this. I also don't really like having strangers in my home, as a woman living alone I already feel very vulnerable.

Celebelly · 25/06/2019 08:49

🤷‍♀️ Well what else can you do? You apparently have no other way to move it so you either live with a broken washing machine or find someone who will help you move it as they've told you they can't for whatever reason. There will be definitely be someone willing to do it, even a local handyman might give you a hand if you explain. Alternatively
you complain to the company and try to push them to send someone who can move it, although it's probably a company policy.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/06/2019 08:50

Ask a neighbour?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/06/2019 08:50

Yes try complaining to the company- failing all else maybe buy a new one on credit with a full installation (ao.com)

Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 08:55

I dont speak to my neighbours after I had to report them to the police for threatening me.

I am trying to complain at present but just getting bounced around. Have explained that I've been left in tears but no one seems to care.

I would definitely ask on facebook for someone to come and help move it. I see this sort of thing on our local oages

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/06/2019 08:56

So every single neighbour you have an issue with? Literally not one person locally you know who could help you?
Ok well not much anyone can suggest with such logic

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 25/06/2019 08:57

Ok don't ask the people who you have reported to the police! Someone will do it though for a tenner. There must be some normal ish people where you live?

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 25/06/2019 08:58

Get an independent washing machine repair person. I had ours fixed and he did a better job putting it in place/reattaching the door than the original fitters did.

ColaFreezePop · 25/06/2019 09:01

Unfortunately companies like that do this frequently. It is worth going on the moneysavingexpert.com site and forums to see what company/retailer repair services are worth paying extra for (hint - none save the money instead).

TheFairyCaravan · 25/06/2019 09:02

We used to have a repair plan for our Hotpoint Machine. They never, ever had the parts when they came and at one point left us over 4 weeks without a washer because even they couldn't get the part and couldn't say when it was coming. At that point I kicked off so they gave us money to replace it because I refused to have another Hotpoint.

I never had to pull it out though. I would check the small print, and check with the insurance company, because it doesn't sound right to me.

Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 09:06

Neighbours next door threatened me. The only other nearby neighbours are in their 80s.

The point is that I've had the washing machine repaired before and never been asked to move it to a different room. Plus if it is moved for the repair, how can the engineer then test it's working after he's done the repair?

OP posts:
Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 09:08

I've spoken to Hotpoint...and they say it's all 'Health & Safety' (literally what they said) and that I must move it myself or they won't repair it.

OP posts:
Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 09:34

So...complaint made. My only option under my repair plan is to allow a different company to come out and look at it. So that's happening on Thursday. Another day's annual leave wasted.

No one quite seems to understand though that if you've moved washing machine from a position where it is plumbed in/ plugged in to somewhere it isn't, how on earth can you either test or demonstrate it is working!

You can buy slide in castors for washing machines and other appliances. This might be an option for the future to help with moving. Surely the technician will need to replumb the machine to check that it is working. Moving the machine should be part of the job. I hope it is sorted for you on Thursday.

NurseButtercup · 25/06/2019 09:57

They do understand, that's how they get away with not completely fulfilling your repair cover.

EleanorAbernathy · 25/06/2019 10:40

Have you tried moving it? I had to move ours yesterday, and washing machines tend to be more awkward than heavy. If you open the door you can get a grip inside and it's much easier, you should be able to slide/drag it.

Itsreallyallovernow · 25/06/2019 10:59

Honestly I can't move it. I can just about push it back under the worktop if it moves out when spinning. Getting it through 2 doorways and a distance of 12ft is just beyond me. If I could drag it (and did) it would damage our wood flooring.

I have sent a written complaint. I think my only alternative is to buy a new one frankly. It certainly won't be a Hotpoint as this has been nothing but hassle (hence the 5+ repairs I've already had). Used to have an amazing LG but can't afford that again.

Anyone got any recommendations or is it just pot luck?
