To want DS to quit Beavers so I don't have to do anymore sewing?

Obviously IABU but I just spent the best part of an hour sewing on three badges and two of them are wonky. Plus I managed to stab myself with a needle twice. I hate sewing. Always have. Why can't they give out stickers instead? Much better for my poor fingers.

Pay someone else to do it for you!

WhiteDust · 24/06/2019 14:07

UHU glue.

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/06/2019 14:08

Perfect time for him to learn how to sew so he can sew his own badges on?

Isn't there a sewing badge that he could earn by sewing the badges on and might they do this as an activity at beavers?

Hoppinggreen · 24/06/2019 14:08

Fabric glue

WhiteDust · 24/06/2019 14:08

Or Bondaweb.

SkydivingKittyCat · 24/06/2019 14:08

Get him to hurry up and get his sewing badge?

drspouse · 24/06/2019 14:09

If you use fabric glue nobody can use the top after you.
I vote pay someone.

SingingLily · 24/06/2019 14:10

Get thee to a haberdashers (lovely word, not often used these days) or its online equivalent and buy iron-on fabric adhesive! It's also useful for tacking up loose hems at short notice.

kelper · 24/06/2019 14:10

wonderweb is your friend here. Then you can do some stitches round the badge so it looks sewn on, but in reality the wonderweb holds it on. Makes a mess of the jumper when you take the badges off to put them on the camp blanket though.....
I have a friend who is fabulous at sewing and she does my DS's badges, even if I pin the badge in place before sewing it still ends up wonky, neither she nor I can work out why!

ATrampsVest · 24/06/2019 14:11

Fabric glue is a thing? OMG how did I not know this? MNetters I love you!

He's six and massively uncoordinated. Can't even tie a shoelace yet. So him sewing them on is a long way off.

Badge glue or take it to sewing repair place

TheDuckSaysMoo · 24/06/2019 14:14

You can even buy badge glue at the scouts shop.

Moonflower12 · 24/06/2019 14:15

I'm a Beaver Leader with my own little Beaver and I say use Woderweb and then 'catch' round the edge with a few stitches so they don't come off. The wonder web makes it so much easier.

BikeRunSki · 24/06/2019 14:15

Badge glue works , but it ruins the jumper and/or badges if you tear the badges off to move onto his Cub uniform or camp blanket.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/06/2019 14:15

I am yet to try wonderweb. I sew and stab my thumbs regularly. DD is in brownies and the badge sash is so thick, it’s almost impossible to sew a badge on. If it’s vaguely in the right place and doesn’t fall off I’m impressed with myself. I’m getting quicker.

Brown owl asked why none of them but my DD wear badges and there was a chorus of disgruntled parents grumbling about the darn sash. Luckily my DD doesn’t collect badges at a fast rate, so I can keep up.

mnahmnah · 24/06/2019 14:16

Ours get saved up and given to Grandma to do when we see her! There is a little booth that does sewing jobs at our local shopping outlet that I might resort to. Anything like that near you?

CottonSock · 24/06/2019 14:18

I'm going off to buy glue right now.
A ruined top, but I'm guessing she will want to keep it anyway. We don't have to move any to next top do we? (Hoping)

bellinisurge · 24/06/2019 14:19

I'd do it for money!

No, seriously, glue is your friend.

WhiteDust · 24/06/2019 14:37

This from most supermarkets.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 24/06/2019 14:44

Just tack through the edges lightly. It doesn't take long then. I have a Brownie and a Cub and joke I have a full time sewing hobby. You don't need to go through the whole sash though for Brownies just the top layer of material. Mind are not that straight but it still looks good from a distance.

ElGuardiandenoche · 24/06/2019 15:43

Welcome to my world 😀

I have three boys who are going through the scouting system plus we’ve moved twice so a change of groups so badges have to be moved over to new kit as well as the change when they go up. Thankfully DS1 finishes Explorers this year so I’m down to two. Though DC2 has joined cadets as well, though there is fewer badges there.

flissfloss65 · 24/06/2019 15:48

My son was with Scouts from 6 until 18 years old. At first we diligently sewed them on but by the age of 11 we only put on the essentisl ones. All the activity ones are in a jar! I do keep meaning to glue them on a blanket but it will never happen.

Cordyline1 · 24/06/2019 15:49

I used fabric glue for rainbows

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/06/2019 15:57

I have over 30 badges to see on various uniforms/camp blankets. DD1 does her important ones, like her Chief Scout, World badge and I'm making her do her Home Help one herself. DD2 helps with her camp blanket. Both on a mission to get the full set of Beaver/Cub badges. 2 leaders, 1 Cub, 1 Beaver here. In September will have more badges once we all move Groups...

BikeRunSki · 24/06/2019 16:03

@CottonSock, in scouting the phased activity badges (the round ones with numbers at the bottom) move up from Beavers/Cubs/Scouts/Explorers. Yiu just wear the one with the highest number. The years of service badges move too. Our scout group expects you to reuse the pack name tape, District badge and membership badge too, on each uniform.
